Meghalaya Trip

Our time in the car is lots of fun with our driver Digantak telling us a lot of information about the place, the cuisine, the culture. He tells us that Meghalaya has three different tribes; Khasi, Garo & Jaintiya. Each of these tribes lives in the Khasi hills, Garo hills and Jaintiya hills respectively. Shillong & Cherrapunji are part of Khasi hills. The Khasi tribe has a matraichial society with the female being the head of the family. The Khasi male stays at home and takes care of children, while females go out to earn bread for the family. We were travelling to Dawki on a Sunday and our driver told us that life comes to a complete standstill in Meghalaya on Sundays with all shops closed. Khasi men wash their cars on Sundays. The cars are cleaned from both inside and outside thoroughly. Then they all go to the Sunday mass and relax in the evening drinking.Read more
