Franz Josef to Queenstown via Haast pass

Long drive to Queenstown today over 400km. Amazing stunning views along the way with large rivers, creeks, and lakes with jaw-dropping views. Queenstown is very busy (Saturday night) and a bit of a shock to the system as we have been so used to more peaceful towns.Baca selengkapnya

Climb up Ben Lomond

Today, after our elevenses coffee, we decided to climb to the skyline where the gondola terminates. A tough climb in woodland which took around an hour. After another cuppa and a look at the viewpoint, we started the climb up Ben Lomond, a 12pm climb to the saddle which is 4383ft. It was a really tough one and we nearly gave up twice but it was worth it for the views. Not as long coming down and a well earned pint at the bottom when we got down at 6pm.
Walking around the harbour to the beach, we listened to a pianist busker who had us both in tears with his playing.Baca selengkapnya

Bike ride to Arrowtown

Hired two e-bikes today and set off to Arrowtown and back, a total of 65km. Tough going with some tough climbs Arrowtown is an old gold mining town with authentic shop fronts, making it look like a wild west town. Only had half an hour there, time for a coffee and then set off back. We passed through Millbrook village where the NZ open golf tournament is playing from the 27th. It was an amazing village with stunning houses no doubt for the golfers. Also circle around building id our hotel across lake. Last two nights we've visited Chocolate house Patagonia Chocolatie that do amazing cakes, ice cream with a view. Every night there's a que going all round shop and upstairs very popular.Baca selengkapnya

Glenorchy and Arrowtown

Woke up to heavy rain this morning, so decided to drive the 40km to Glenorchy, for a mooch around. Found a shortish walk, which took us through the swamps and wetlands. The sun came out and was quite warm by the time we got back to the car. We then drove to Arrowtown where we cycled yesterday to have a proper look round.Baca selengkapnya

Back in Franz Josef

Drove back up to Franz Josef glacier on Wednesday, stopped at Cardrona. Then Wanaka. Wished we had time to stay. Had cream cake not long after breakfast couldn't resist. Swam in lakes, stopped to walk. So many lakes 380 just in south island alone.Baca selengkapnya

Okarito, Waiau glacier coast

Did a 10k hike around the Three Mile lagoon through rainforest to the lagoon and a suspension bridge. The lagoon is tidal. Our walk continued back along the beach, but we had to wait for low tide before we could finish the walk.Baca selengkapnya

After the Helihike

After helihike we had to look for a cafe, so followed the signs to Matheson Lake where there was a great cafe. After the coffee and carrot cake, we did a short walk round the lake.

Helihike Fox Glacier

Went on an amazing Helihike today on the Fox glacier. Started at 10.00am with briefing on safety and then we got geared up with boots, trousers and jackets, then a short bus ride to the heliport. It was only a five minute ride to the landing point on the glacier and we had 3 hours exploring the site with a guide. It was a truly memorable experience.Baca selengkapnya

Last hike of the hols, Roberts point

Journey back to Christchurch

Back to Christchurch along the great alpine highway weather was raining on the west coast, but 30c on the east coast. We stopped a few times on the way including some river caves which were a kilometre long, but we didnt venture too far in. We had to buy a few packets of our favourite sweets, which we have had with us at all times!!! Visited Botanic Gardens in Christchurch.Baca selengkapnya
