A tour through the Greek and Roman aqueducts that feed water to the city in ancient times. They’re built into the tuft from ancient volcanic ash fall, which makes it water porous. The original aqueducts were excavated through wells, and you can still see tiny steps used for moving around when water filled the system.

When the Spanish came and the city expanded, they built a sewage system above the aqueduct, which seeped down and caused cholera epidemics. So the aqueducts were shut down and used as garbage dumps.

During WWII, they paved over the garbage and used the tunnels for air raid shelters.
