Waisenhaus, Basketball & Fußball 🏀⚽

Essaouira ist aus meiner Sicht ein angenehmer und passender Ort, um mit der Kultur Marokkos in Berührung zu kommen. Geht man Richtung Strand ist es meist - auch mit Blick auf die Kleidungswahl - noch sehr europäisch angehaucht 🇪🇺
Geht man vom Strand Richtung 'Medina', findet man viele verschiedene kleine Läden, die insbesondere Dinge aus dem eigenen Handwerk, Fisch, Gewürze und jegliche Art von Textilien anbieten. Aufgrund der religiös-islamischen Kultur ist es, je mehr man ins Landesinnere geht, gerne gesehen und ein Zeichen des Respekts, dass man sowohl die Schultern als auch die Knie mit Kleidung bedeckt 👕👖
Aufgrund der touristischen Prägung ist es in den meisten Küstenorten dennoch kein Problem, bspw. in Shorts durch die Straßen zu schlendern 🚶🏽‍♂️
Im Anschluss an unsere erste Erkundungstour durch die City trafen Lisa und ich uns mit den Schüler*innen, Lehrkräften, Johanna und ihrer Familie sowie Mats um 16:30 Uhr an einem Waisenhaus in Essaouira 🏫
Viele Familien der Schüler*innen hatten uns bereits bei der Abfahrt Sachspenden mitgegeben, die wir nun an die Kinder übergeben konnten 🎒
Nach einer kurzen Führung durch das Waisenhaus gab es für uns eine Stunde 'Arabic Class' ✏️
Wir lernten etwas über allgemeine Verhaltensweisen sowie Grundlagen für erste Gespräche auf arabisch 🗣️
Nach dem spannenden Einblick trafen dann unsere Jugendlichen auf die Bewohner des Waisenhauses (etwa 5-13 Jahre alt). Es wurden Basketbälle herausgegeben und nach dem Einwerfen ein Match veranstaltet 🏀
Im Anschluss gab es dann noch gemeinsame Tänze und Gesänge und es blieb noch Zeit für lockere Gespräche 👯‍♂️
Passend zum Abendessen verabschiedeten wir uns von den Kids und machten uns auf den Rückweg. In Essaouira kann man Lebensmittel auf dem Markt einkaufen und danach zu einem Koch bringen, der dir daraus ein leckeres Gericht zubereitet. Ash, unser Kontakt in Essaouira, hatte dies bereits für uns getan und uns dann zu einem Lokal in der City geführt. Das Essen war sehr abwechslungsreich und es war für jeden etwas dabei 🥘
Gut gesättigt ging es dann um 21:00 Uhr zum Strand, wo wir ein Fußballmatch mit einer 'Street Class' ausgemacht hatten. In Essaouira gibt es für Kinder die Möglichkeit, einmal am Tag für eine Stunde in den umliegenden Gassen der Medina Unterricht in den verschiedensten Sprachen mitzumachen. Es wird bspw. an einem Tag Deutsch angeboten, an einem anderen Tag Englisch ✍🏽
Insgesamt kamen etwa 60 Jugendliche am Strand zusammen, um in zwei parallel laufenden Spielen ihr Können zu zeigen. Der Rest, der nicht mitspielen wollte, tauschte sich in lockeren Runden u. a. über die deutsche und marrokanische Kultur aus 🇩🇪🇲🇦
Am Ende des Abends konnten wir beide Spiele knapp für uns entscheiden (2:0/2:1) und gingen mit vielen neuen Erfahrungen im Gepäck zurück ins Riad 🏙️

Orphanage, basketball & soccer 🏀⚽

In my opinion, Essaouira is a pleasant and suitable place to come into contact with Moroccan culture. If you head towards the beach, it's usually still very European - also in terms of the choice of clothing 🇪🇺
If you walk from the beach in the direction of the 'medina', you will find many different small stores selling, in particular, handicrafts, fish, spices and all kinds of textiles. Due to the religious Islamic culture, the more you go inland, the more it is appreciated and a sign of respect that you cover your shoulders and knees with clothing 👕👖
However, due to the touristy nature of most coastal towns, it is not a problem to stroll through the streets in shorts, for example 🚶🏽‍♂️
After our first exploratory tour of the city, Lisa and I met up with the students, teachers, Johanna and her family and Mats at 4:30 pm at an orphanage in Essaouira 🏫
Many of the students' families had already given us donations in kind on our departure, which we were now able to hand over to the children 🎒
After a short tour of the orphanage, we had an hour of 'Arabic Class' ✏️
We learned about general behavior and the basics for our first conversations in Arabic 🗣️
After the exciting insight, our youngsters then met the residents of the orphanage (around 5-13 years old). Basketballs were handed out and a match was organized after the throw-in 🏀
Afterwards, we danced and sang together and there was still time for informal chats 👯‍♂️
Just in time for dinner, we said goodbye to the kids and made our way back. In Essaouira, you can buy food at the market and then take it to a cook who will prepare a delicious dish for you. Ash, our contact in Essaouira, had already done this for us and then took us to a restaurant in the city center. The food was very varied and there was something for everyone 🥘
Well-fed, we then headed to the beach at 9 pm, where we had arranged a soccer match with a 'street class'. In Essaouira, children have the opportunity to take part in lessons in various languages once a day for an hour in the surrounding alleyways of the medina. For example, German is offered on one day and English on another ✍🏽
In total, around 60 young people came together on the beach to show off their skills in two parallel games. The rest, who didn't want to play, chatted in informal groups about German and Moroccan culture, among other things 🇩🇪🇲🇦
At the end of the evening, we narrowly won both games (2:0/2:1) and went back to the Riad with many new experiences in our luggage 🏙️
