Der Mast und die Challenges 🚩

Faszination Segelschiff ⛵
Die Schüler*innen fangen an, die Regina Maris als 'Zuhause' zu bezeichnen.
'Ich bin froh, wenn ich nach der Wanderung Zuhause duschen kann' (Jakob auf dem Rückweg vom Pico del Teide) 🚶🏽
Seit 6 Wochen ist dieses Schiff nun unser Zuhause. Bisher sehr verlässlich - abgesehen vom Watermaker - bringt es uns von Land zu Land. Es trotzt den Wellen und der Gischt und zeigt uns eine beeindruckende Tierwelt und spannende chemische und physikalische Besonderheiten. Als 'Lernumgebung' ein wahrer Genuss, das so viele Anknüpfungspunkte zu bieten hat 🌀
Neben den ganzen Vorteilen für eine große Gemeinschaft, bietet es obendrein einige wenig Orte, in denen man sich zurückziehen kann. Zuerst gibt es am Heck des Schiffes zwei Bänke, die zum 'Seele- und Beinebaumeln-lassen' einladen. Mit dem Rücken zum Schiff gedreht, sieht man vor sich nur die Weite des Ozeans und unter seinen Füßen das rauschende Wasser an sich vorbeiziehen 🌊
Auf der anderen Seite lädt das Netz am Bug des Schiffes zum entspannten Lesen oder einfach zum Relaxen ein. Bewaffnet mit einer Life-Jacket kann man sich in ein Sicherungsseil einhaken und an guten Tagen auch Delfinen beim Schwimmen und Spielen zusehen 🐬
Obgleich es sich so anhört, als sei es der 'favorit place to be', sieht man kaum mehr als zwei Schüler*innen, die es sich am Tag im Netz bequem machen - vielleicht auch, weil es langsam zur 'Normalität' wird 🕸️
Mein absoluter 'favorit place to be' ist und bleibt aber die Aussichtsplattform im vorderen Mast. Um dort hinzugelangen zieht man sich zunächst ein 'Harness' an, welches man in der Kiste neben dem Steuer findet. Danach klickt man sich mit den zwei Sicherungshaken an das Stahlseil der - nach oben hin spitz zulaufenden - Leiter ein und klettert immer 2-3 Sprossen hoch, um sich dann wieder neu zu sichern 🪜
Diese Kletterei ist allerdings nicht für jeden etwas, da die Leiter sehr spitz zuläuft (am Ende passt nur noch ein Fuß in die Sprosse; s. Video) und es oben sehr windig und noch deutlich wackeliger ist, als an Deck 🫨
Der Aufstieg wird dann aber mit einer atemberaubenden Sicht belohnt und einer entspannten Zeit nur für sich (und ggf. max. zwei weiteren Personen) 🔈
Sonnenuntergänge auf dem Mast sind bisher die schönsten, die ich jemals erleben durfte 🌅

Mein persönliches Highlight:
Das leicht angespannte aber sehr bedächtige Hochklettern und der wundervolle, bilderbuchartige Sonnenuntergang an meinem 'favorit place to be' 🚩

The fascination of a sailing ship ⛵
The students begin to refer to the Regina Maris as 'home'.

This boat has been our home for 6 weeks now. So far it has been very reliable - apart from the watermaker - taking us from land to land. It defies the waves and spray and shows us impressive wildlife and exciting chemical and physical features. A real treat as a 'learning environment' that has so many points of contact to offer 🌀
In addition to all the benefits for a large community, it also offers a few places where you can retreat. First of all, there are two benches at the stern of the boat that invite you to 'relax and unwind'. With your back turned to the ship, all you can see in front of you is the vastness of the ocean and the water rushing by beneath your feet 🌊
On the other side, the net on the bow of the ship invites you to read or simply relax. Armed with a life jacket, you can hook yourself into a safety rope and, on good days, watch dolphins swim and play 🐬
Although it sounds like it's the 'favorite place to be', you hardly ever see more than two students making themselves comfortable in the net during the day - perhaps because it's slowly becoming the 'norm' 🕸️
My absolute 'favorite place to be' is and remains the viewing platform in the front mast. To get there, you first put on a harness, which you can find in the box next to the wheel. Then use the two safety hooks to click yourself onto the steel cable of the ladder - which tapers towards the top - and climb up 2-3 rungs at a time before securing yourself again 🪜
However, this climb is not for everyone, as the ladder is very tapered (at the end, only one foot fits into the rung; see video) and it is very windy at the top and much more wobbly than on deck 🫨
However, the ascent is then rewarded with a breathtaking view and a relaxing time just for yourself (and possibly a maximum of two other people) 🔈
Sunsets on the mast are the most beautiful I have ever experienced 🌅

My personal highlight:
The slightly tense but very deliberate climb up and the wonderful, picture-book sunset at my 'favorite place to be' 🚩
