Jardin de Balata - Botanischer Garten 🌴

Gestärkt durchs Frühstück machten wir uns um 9:20 Uhr zu Fuß mit allen Schüler*innen auf den Weg. Wir gingen etwa 35 Minuten zur Busstation, um unseren Bus - hoffentlich pünktlich - um 10:10 Uhr zu erwischen. Vor Ort angekommen, mussten wir uns erst einmal zurechtfinden. Die Busse fuhren nämlich rund um einen Friedhof ab und es wurde nicht direkt ersichtlich, welche Linie nun an welcher Ecke in welche Richtung fuhr. Was zunächst eher zu einer kurzen Phase der Verwirrtheit und Desorientierung führte, sollte uns noch in die Karten spielen. Kaspar konnte nämlich - nach einigen Nachfragen - eine Dame ausfindig machen, die für das städtische Busunternehmen arbeitete und prompt unseren Ticketkauf organisierte. Aber nicht nur das: Sie sagte uns zunächst, dass unser Bus 20 Minuten Verspätung hätte, aber sie uns diesen auch gleich komplett reservieren könne. Wir gingen zusammen zu einem Schalter in der Nähe und mussten dann für 40 Personen insgesamt lediglich 29 € zahlen. Ein schöner Zufall 🚌
Unsere Endstation sollte der Jardin de Balata sein - der botanische Garten von Fort-de-France. Dort teilten wir uns in 2 Gruppen auf. Die einen gingen mit Lisa und mir in den botanischen Garten und die anderen unternahmen eine 2 1/2 h Wanderung zu einem Wasserfall. Es wurde vorher transparent gemacht, dass auch hier der Weg das Ziel ist. Sollte die Beschaffenheit der Wege oder irgendwelche anderen Faktoren (bspw. Regenschauer etc.) die Sicherheit der Unternehmung nicht mehr gewährleisten können, so würde die Gruppe einen anderen Weg suchen oder umdrehen ⤴️⤵️
Es sollte sich herausstellen, dass sie den Wasserfall aufgrund der Wegeswidrigkeiten nicht erreicht haben - was der Stimmung aber keinesfalls zugesetzt hat. Währenddessen gingen Lisa und ich mit insgesamt 18 Personen in den botanischen Garten.
Gegen 11 Uhr betraten wir den Garten und haben den Schüler*innen bis 14 Uhr Zeit gegeben diesen auf eigene Faust in Dreiergruppen zu erkunden. Lisa und ich folgten in der Zeit dem ausgeschilderten Rundgang und konnten bis etwa 13 Uhr viele faszinierende Eindrücke sammeln. Insbesondere der Baumwipfelpfad konnte uns noch eine ganz andere Perspektive auf den Garten eröffnen 📸🌺🌴
Nach einem kurzen Besuch des Souvenirshops und einer angrenzenden kleinen Boutique, warteten wir dann am Anfang des Parks auf die Schüler*innen. Auf dem Hinweg hatte ich mich spontan noch etwas über die Umgebung rund um den botanischen Garten informiert und noch eine kleine Überraschung parat. Daher machten wir mit allen 18 Personen nach dem Besuch vom Jardin de Balata noch eine kleine 17-minütige Wanderung. Der Weg hatte sehr viel zu bieten (s. Fotos) und die Kids waren fasziniert von der Flora und Fauna, die sie umgab. Am Ende unserer Wanderung erblickten dann alle einen Wasserfall, dessen Ablauf unter einem großen Brückenbogen hindurch floss. Eine Steintreppe führte am Rande der Brücke zum Wasserfall hinab und alle, die Badesachen eingepackt hatten, machten sich auf ins kühle Nass. Das Süßwasser (mal als angenehme Abwechslung zum andauernden Salzwasserkontakt) war angenehm temperiert und klar. Einige Schüler*innen wateten auch ohne Badeklamotten durch den Flusslauf 🚶🏽
Da die Temperatur ganz angenehm war, wurde zwischen Malte, Marie und mir kurzerhand - direkt nach unserem Foto - eine kleine Wasserschlacht veranstaltet, nach der wir unsere Klamotten dann kurz vor dem Rückweg am Brückengeländer auswringen konnten. Leider hatte Marie kein Handtuch sowie Wechselklamotten dabei - da dieser spontane Trip und die Wasserschlacht ja nun auch nicht so geplant war - weshalb es nur fair war, dass sie das Handtuch und das trockene Ersatz-T-Shirt vom Auslöser der Wasserschlacht angeboten bekam 👕
An der Bushaltestelle vor dem botanischen Garten angekommen, nutzten wir die Wartezeit, um noch eine Bananenstaude zu ernten. Diese wurde vorbildlich abgetrennt und dann von den Schüler*innen zum Schiff transportiert 🍌
Nach Wiederankunft hatten alle noch eine free-shore-leave-Zeit bis 19 Uhr. Lisa und ich wanderten von der Busstation zum 40 Minuten entfernten Copyshop und den angrenzenden Lebensmittelladen 'Carefour', um die letzten Besorgungen für das anstehende Weihnachtsfest zu machen 🛍️🎀
Am Abend hatten die Schüler*innen noch Zeit gemeinsam Kekse zu backen, das Weihnachtstheaterstück zu proben oder sich anderweitig nützlich zu machen 🖌️🎨
Insgesamt lag - vom Gefühl her - eine etwas aufgeheizte Stimmung mit einer Mischung aus Vorfreude, Besinnlichkeit und Überdrehtheit vor 🍪

Strengthened by breakfast, we set off on foot with all the students at 9:20 am. We walked about 35 minutes to the bus station to catch our bus - hopefully on time - at 10:10 am. Once we arrived, we first had to find our way around. The buses left from around a cemetery and it wasn't immediately clear which line went in which direction at which corner. What initially led to a brief phase of confusion and disorientation was to play into our hands. After a few inquiries, Kaspar was able to find a lady who worked for the municipal bus company and promptly organized our ticket purchase. But that wasn't all: she first told us that our bus was 20 minutes late, but that she could reserve it for us in full. We went to a nearby ticket office together and only had to pay a total of €29 for 40 people. A nice coincidence 🚌
Our final stop was to be the Jardin de Balata - the botanical garden of Fort-de-France. There we split into 2 groups. One group went to the botanical garden with Lisa and me and the other group went on a 2 1/2 hour hike to a waterfall. It was made clear beforehand that the journey is the reward. If the condition of the paths or any other factors (e.g. rain showers etc.) meant that the safety of the undertaking could no longer be guaranteed, the group would look for another route or turn around ⤴️⤵️
It turned out that they didn't reach the waterfall due to the path difficulties - but this didn't dampen their spirits at all. Meanwhile, Lisa and I went to the botanical garden with a total of 18 people.
We entered the garden at around 11 a.m. and gave the students until 2 p.m. to explore it on their own in groups of three. Lisa and I followed the signposted tour during this time and were able to gather many fascinating impressions until around 1 pm. The treetop path in particular gave us a completely different perspective on the garden 📸🌺🌴
After a quick visit to the souvenir store and an adjacent small boutique, we waited for the students at the start of the park. On the way there, I had spontaneously found out a little more about the area around the botanical garden and had a little surprise in store. So after visiting the Jardin de Balata, we went on a short 17-minute hike with all 18 of us. The path had a lot to offer (see photos) and the kids were fascinated by the flora and fauna that surrounded them. At the end of our hike, we all came across a waterfall, the water flowing under a large arched bridge. A stone staircase led down to the waterfall at the edge of the bridge and everyone who had packed their swimming gear headed into the cool water. The fresh water (a pleasant change from the constant contact with salt water) was at a pleasant temperature and clear. Some of the students waded through the river even without swimming gear 🚶🏽
As the temperature was quite pleasant, Malte, Marie and I had a little water fight right after our photo, after which we were able to wring out our clothes on the bridge railing just before heading back. Unfortunately, Marie didn't have a towel or a change of clothes with her - as this spontaneous trip and the water fight hadn't been planned that way - so it was only fair that she was offered the towel and the dry spare T-shirt from the person who started the water fight 👕
When we arrived at the bus stop in front of the botanical garden, we used the waiting time to harvest a banana tree. This was cut off in an exemplary manner and then transported to the ship by the students 🍌
After arriving back home, everyone had some free-shore-leave time until 7pm. Lisa and I walked from the bus station to the copy store 40 minutes away and the adjacent grocery store 'Carefour' to run the last few errands for the upcoming Christmas 🛍️🎀
In the evening, the students still had time to bake cookies together, rehearse the Christmas play or make themselves useful in other ways 🖌️🎨
Overall, there was a somewhat heated atmosphere with a mixture of anticipation, contemplation and excitement 🍪

My personal highlight:
The botanical garden, the surrounding flora and fauna as well as the atmosphere and cooling off at the waterfall 💦
