Today we headed back to Paris and the end of our Insight tour of France.
On the way, we stopped at
Chartres, which has what is regarded as Europe’s best example of a pure Gothic cathedral - Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Chartres, built between 1194 and 1220 after the old church burnt down.
In 876, the church had acquired the veil birthing gown supposedly worn by Mary when she gave birth to Jesus. It is regarded as a 'miracle' that it survived not only the fire but WWII bombings as well, as did the stained glass windows which dated from the 12th century.Read more
