    Gumbo Shop

    March 18, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Was on my way to a fancier dinner when I passed this little place near Jackson Square. Gumbo was on my list of things I had to try, and Yelp gave this place decent reviews. I decided to deviate from my original plan and give it a try.

I ordered the Chicken and Andouille Gumbo with a Hurricane (another must try). It came out in less than 5 minutes with a side of bread. The gumbo was good, and the soft bread was great for dipping. The Hurricane was ridiculously sweet and very strong. I ended up taking most of it to go so I could sip it as I strolled around the French Quarter.

    Jackson Square

    March 18, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

One of the most photographed and iconic places in Nee Orleans, Jackson Square is a big part of the city’s history. The park was filled with tourists and street vendors. Bagpipes played in the background. It was the perfect spot to sit on a bench and read as the energy of the city surrounded me.Read more

    Ruby Slipper Cafe

    March 18, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌫 20 °C

I was super excited when I found out that this restaurant was next door to my hotel. This shows up on a lot of lists of places to have breakfast. I was up early and decided to give it a try.

They are well-known for their Bananas Foster French Toast so it didn’t take me a ton of time to place my order. I was not disappointed! It was overflowing with bananas soaked in a sweet syrupy sauce. The bacon provided the perfect bit of savoriness to offset the sweetness of the French Toast. This is a must try when in New Orleans!Read more

    Bourbon Street

    March 17, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

When I booked my trip, I had no idea it fell over St. Patties Day weekend. I’m not a big drinker but decided to explore the craziness of Bourbon Street on the biggest drinking day of the year.

Wow. It was crazy. I was the only one on the street not wearing green and not carrying a drink. I managed to make it up and down the street once before bailing out and heading back to my room. It was an interesting experience that I’m happy to never have again!

    Killer PoBoys

    March 17, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Dinner tonight was my first sampling of one of New Orleans’ famous eats! I chose the BBQ Chicken Confit...chicken smothered in coffee barbecue sauce, ranch slaw and red onions stuffed inside a deliciously soft hoagie roll.

    It was messy but delicious!

    New Orleans City Park

    March 17, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

I had an hour to kill before returning my rental car. City Park was on my list of places to visit, and it was an easy detour on the way to the airport. It’s one of the nation’s oldest urban parks dating back to 1854. It is almost like stepping back into time with the massive oak trees that are close to 1,000 years old.

I was able to take a few photos before a crazy rainstorm forced me back to the car.

    March 17, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Landed in New Orleans around 12:30am on Saturday. Picked up my rental car and drove the 45 minutes to a little town called Slidell. I opted for a Motel 6 since I only needed a room for a few hours. It wasn’t 4 star lodging but it did the job.

The time difference had me up early so I had plenty of time to hit the Mississippi line before checking into my 9:30am swamp tour. I drove across the state line, spent a few minutes taking a photo and left. counts as being in the state so I can officially cross it off my list!

    Portland, Maine

    August 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Our final day has arrived! We had a day to spend in Portland before heading home to Virginia. I couldn’t pass up another opportunity for a Holy Donut. I went with that maple bacon one and was definitely not disappointed!

We spent a few hours exploring the shops before heading to a nearby beach. Of course, we couldn’t resist stopping to see one more Maine lighthouse. I’m glad we did. This one was one of the more picturesque ones we saw.

A few hours of rest and relaxation on the beach was just what we needed after the last few days of adventures.

Goodbye New England! Can’t wait to come back again soon.

    Portland Bound

    August 1, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We were both ready to pack up the tent and head towards Portland where there was a hot shower and comfortable bed.

We had a minor fender bender in the campground parking lot which put us slightly behind schedule.

We still found a few hours to stop in Freeport and visit the original LL Bean Store before heading south.

A quick detour in Yarmouth for lunch where we discovered Clayton’s Cafe. This unassuming roadside sandwich shop served up the most amazing buffalo chicken corn chowder. I still dream about that soup!

We were exhausted by the time we reached Portland. We grabbed dinner at a small gastropub before settling in for the night. Having an actual bed to sleep on was great!

    Wolfe's Neck Campground

    July 30, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

It was hard to leave Boothbay Harbor but our evening’s accommodations were over an hour away. This would be our last night in a campground, and we were more than ready to be done with the rafts we were using for mattresses.

Wolfe’s Neck Campground came highly recommended. It’s located on a working farm and offers oceanfront campsites, kayak rentals and more.

The best part about this place was the Farm Cafe which surprisingly served really good food. I ordered the hummus was better than expected!

Our last night camping wouldn’t have been complete without sitting by the fire as the sun set.
