    Hanging in Parkdale

    October 18, 2024 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

The girls are back together. It’s been a long time, way too long and it’s been endearing to listen to them talk and talk and talk. And show each other things on their phones and talk and talk and talk. Only as sisters can. Some Airbnb issues to work out, oat latte and a pumpkin muffin at Grocery Coffee on Queen St (yum!) then into DT to run an errand. Distractions in the form of rando garage sale and tons of discarded Toronto Public Library archives to sift through. Lunch at PokeWorks at the Well. Clara and Pippa had sushi and an Uncle Tetsu Japanese cheesecake - also yum. Poked around an Indigo then a drive to Colonel Sam Smith to spy birds. We saw a black crowned night heron, many mergansers, grebes and butter butts (yellow rumped warbler) and hermit thrushes and blue crested Vireos and golden crowned kinglets. Oh, and 10 swans a-swimming. I tried a vegan veggie bisque from Plant You and grilled cheese with fig jam for dindins. A new game, Wingspan, I need another shot at it bc I did not get it.Read more

  • The Big smoke sure is busy

    October 19, 2024 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

Starting my day off with a solo walk to Brockton Village, and spying all the fabulous Halloween efforts along the way. A trip to St Lawrence Market is always fun, and great people watching. We got everything! And lunch was a smoked salmon on baguette. Yum. $9 or with extra salmon , $20. 🤔 the girlies did a cooking class and learned to make arepas and learned to eat them too. Hung out with aunty M and Dom and prepped for dinner. Jan and Pat made it from northern England and we had some laughs. After pasta dinner, the girls and I went to the retro arcade bar - the youngest isn’t quite old enough but I very smoothly smuggled her in. We didn’t last long tho. Fun to play galaga and donky kong again.Read more

  • Birthday, High Park & capybaras

Clara turns 21! Big English breakfast, then two girls head off to Uni. A walk through High Park, Bonnie and Clyde the capybaras (named because last year they escaped and were on the lam for 8 weeks!). Bye bye Pippa. Finished the day with dinner at the Rhino pub.Read more

  • The magical place

    October 21, 2024 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

Heading north, we landed at the most beautiful spot in ALL the Muskokas. And I know that’s a big statement. But Ethel Lodge on Pine Lake is out of this world. And can you believe it, we took the Annie Mae steamboat out with Uncle Bill at the helm and we lunched in picnic bay. Hamburger soup, homemade bread and butter tarts. Wow wow wow. The weather is unbelievable. +23!!

And I did swim the 79 metres across to the point and the 79 metres back. And it was freaking cold. Like so cold once I dove in, I was not sure I should have tried. I got a few metres out and wasn’t warming up and was having a hard time breathing. But I figured it out and swam to the point and back. But I couldn’t put my head in to swim. Just too cold. 🥶
Dinner and then stargazing to try to see the comet. Amazed that I was able to capture the Big Dipper so clearly. Night night!

  • More muskoka

    October 22, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Boy it was chilly in the bunkhouse when I work up. It too me forever to brave the air and get up. Breakfast, enjoying the beauty of this place and then a walk at Hardy Park Provincial Park (there’s a neatish history of this park and the wealthy guy who owned it and the lake and the islands etc but I can’t remember it). What a glorious day. I took so many photos of leaves!! We played Mexican train and Parcheesi (love this game) and feeding very bold demanding chipmunks. then YAY there was time for a kayak around the bays and to The other side and by the little island. I did not crash or flip and stayed mostly dry. Another win. But we had to leave and that was sad.Read more

  • The mighty Welland canal

    October 24, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We daytripped to southern Ontario, stopping at Lock 3 of the Welland Canal, part of the St Lawrence Seaway. This is the Gaia Desgagnes making its way slowly through the canal. It first did the ‘hugging the wall’ move and was then suctioned to the other wall. Once in place, the locks behind it were closed and the arrestor arm lifted, and the forward locks opened. The Welland canal allows ships to get from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie and circumvent Niagara Falls. The elevation change between the lakes is 99 .5 metres.
A stop at Peller estates for some ice wine tasting and bottle buying, then Niagara on the Lake for cute shopping and a pint at the same pub Jan and Pat went to when they visited 40 years earlier and then wrapping the trip off with dinner at
The Skyline Diner. I may or may not have done a bit of vandalism.
