• Our first day in Budapest

    21. Oktober 2025 in Ungarn ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Our first day in Budapest was the perfect mix of iconic landmarks, good food, and moments that made us pause sometimes just to soak it all in, and other times to catch our breath.

We started out at St. Stephen’s Basilica, admiring at its grand exterior without heading inside. Just standing in the square, looking up at that huge dome, you feel the city’s history settle around you. It was a beautiful spot to begin our jam packed day!

A short walk brought us to the famous Chain Bridge. Crossing it felt like stepping into a postcard the Danube glistening below, Budapest spread out on both sides. I never even knew that there were two sides Buda and Pest. It’s such a graceful, historic bridge you can’t help but stop and take in the view, from the Parliament building on the Pest side to the hills of Buda.

Once across, we made our way up to Buda Castle. We caught the Changing of the Guard just outside the palace, a neat little surprise that made the visit feel even more special.

Not far from there is Fisherman’s Bastion with its fairytale like towers and sweeping city views. We enjoyed the views but didn’t stay long the day was still young, and hunger was calling.

Lunch at Blueberry Cafe was a cozy, tasty break. The cafe was a hidden gem fresh, simple food and a relaxed vibe, perfect for recharging before the afternoon.

After lunch, we headed to one of the most moving places in Budapest the Shoes on the Danube memorial. This spot hit me harder than I expected. The memorial is simple just iron shoes lined along the riverbank but its meaning runs deep. It honors the Jews who were forced to take off their shoes before being shot into the Danube river during World War II.

There’s no big monument, no dramatic plaques just the shoes. Men’s boots, women’s heels, tiny children’s shoes, all frozen in time. Seeing them there, with the river flowing quietly beside them, brought a lump to my throat. It’s such a humble but powerful reminder of a tragic past. You can’t help but stand in silence, feeling the weight of what happened, and the lives that were so tragically lost.

To end the day on a lighter note, we headed to For Sale Pub which was exactly the kind of quirky spot we didn’t know we needed. The floor covered in hay and empty peanut shells and walls plastered with notes and drawings from travelers it was the perfect place to relax, laugh, and soak up some local atmosphere.

By the time we got home, our feet were tired, but we were buzzing with all the things we’d seen and felt. Budapest had made a strong first impression, and we’re already excited to see what’s next in store for tomorrow.
