• Questionable decisions on Pinchot Pass

    2. juli, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Just one of those days where it was hard to make the right decision. The grey clouds had been coming and going all day. The weather report through my Garmin said some rain at 4pm, thunderstorms from 7pm.

We power walked up the side of the mountain and at 3:30pm the rumble of thunder started. We waited, unsure if we should retreat to the exposed flats below the climb or push over the pass. From above, a decisive voice called to us "if you're going to go, you need to go NOW!"

We threw our packs back on and sprinted as fast as we could possibly go up to the pass. Thunder rumbled closer and closer as we passed over the ridge and ran down the other side of the pass. In future, if there's even a hint of thunder, I'll be descending to somewhere safe to wait it out.

Grateful to be tucked up warm and safe in my tent, with a hot water bottle at my feet and a hot chocolate in my hand
