For the fifth time in a year, we find ourselves on a P&O cruise ship...indeed the fifth ship of the seven in their fleet. Let's see what the Arvia has to offer...alas, it is a rather large ship! Les mer

Marseilles was our second new stop on this trip, so up early as usual to make the most of the day...hampered by a stunted start! Shuttle bus in again as the terminal is 10km outside Marseilles centre, but we could actually exit the terminal as the gates were locked, prompting frantic calls from the bus driver to laissez-faire port authorities ("It's Sunday...") who then retorted "I hate my country sometimes" 😂 Outside the port gates, the Marseilles 10km was underway, so we had to duck under tape to cross the road...which apparently we shouldn't have, evidenced by an alarmed race official running to stop bus-loads of tourists crossing! We were dropped in front of the cathedral, and we ventured behind into La Panier, the winding, famed streets full of beautiful streets art and vintage shops fronts.Les mer

Further into the heart of Marseilles is the Palais Longchamp, apparently built to celebrate the building of an aqueduct to combat cholera. The grade facade is stunning and gave lovely views over the city. The walk to it, like much of the day, took us through fascinating architecture - at once beautiful and historic yet dilapidated.Les mer

Walking along La Canabiére back towards the Vieux Port, we considered getting a boat to see the national park of the Calanques. It being full for the 11am sailing put pay to that for the morning, but we explored the port market and enjoyed some local beer, sitting on the edge of the dock, under the shadow of the Basilique Notelre Dame de la Garde.Les mer

Walking around the port, we popped up to fort-like 3rd Century Abbaye Saint Victor, steeped in an incense haze inside. Then we made a silly, but usual decision. Despite feeling sleepy from the sun and the beer, the big hill was calling so we decided to walk the 150m hill to the Basilique Notelre Dame de la Garde. It was steep, and hot on the way up...but as ever the views made it worth it. We had an especially lovely view over Chateau D'If, an island prison of Count of Monte Cristo fame, which we had also hoped to visit but alas there was no sailings to it today.

Back down the hill, we toyed with seeing if there was space on the afternoon Calanques sailing, but opted instead for the absolutely stunning Ciel. We only found this rooftop bar and restaurant on the internet and definitely would NOT have stumbled upon it, with there being almost no advertising or identification. But the view over the whole of Marseilles including the Basilique were stunning from the 7th floor bar so we stayed for a couple in the sunshine! Heading back around the port, through Fort Jean, we aimed back to the shuttle bus and the ship, taking advantage of a late afternoon whirlpool before departure. Tired and a little pinker than before, it's on to Barcelona!Les mer

So...back to Barcelona. Last here 15 years ago and amongst our least favourite travelling stops. But, second chances, right?!
We got an early shuttle to the city from the port and walked to the Parlament of Catalunya to start the day, before heading to the Arc de Triomf and the Sagradi Família. The former was quite peaceful but, even early in the morning, the Sagradi Família was heaving with people. The hawkers had hilarious "quick escape" displays - all their goods laid out on a sheet with a rope attached to each of the fours corners whilst they held the ends, so they could pull the corners together and make a quick escape if necessary! Heading towards the Casa Batlló, another Gaudi creation, we happened upon the rooftop bar in the Hotel Majestic. Living up to its name, the views from the 10th floor were superb as the sun finally broke through the clouds, and for the majority of the time we had the terrace to ourselves. Wandering on through Las Rambla, we popped into the Mercat de la Boqueria and Ben grabbed some octopus, and then onto the Gothic Quarter, which was a much nicer side of Barcelona. Undecided on what to do with the last bit of the afternoon, we opted for Black Dog microbrewery over the aquarium, before heading our tired legs back to the ship. Barcelona was perhaps better than we remembered, but still not nowhere near one of the best places we've visited; very much our "Eight-dollarist bottle of wine" stop!Les mer

The port in Alicante is an easy walk to the town, unlike some of other ports on this trip, so we meandered the seafront shortly after docking, aiming as always to walk up The Big Hill. In this case, it was Santa Barbara Castle, which offered beautiful views over the town. Walking back down, we headed for the sights of City Hall and wandered the shopping streets, stopping at the Central Market en route before heading for the sea front and the tourist market there. Back on the ship, we had lunch and then briefly considered the adult-only pool under the baking sunshine but reconsidered when we saw how packed it was. So we did a rubbish trivia quiz instead with weird and niche answers, before relaxing for the rest of the evening.Les mer

Lazy day at Sea

Day at sea with not a huge amount on board we wanted to do, so a day spent reading, cross-stitching and watching Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It was black tie night though, so we dressed up for the evening and enjoyed a celebration meal followed by a wine flight in the Glass House. Much of day was spent with the impressive view of the Spanish coast and mountains out of our window and Morocco off the other side!Les mer

Final port stop, and despite having been here before we could apparently remember nothing about it...and the memory did not come flooding back! We walked out and through Cadiz to start with, to San Sebastian Castle on a spit of land. The castle wasn't open but the rock pools underneath made for a fab stop, with crabs, shrimp and fish all to be found, and a beach full of stones for skimming. We spent the rest of the day zig-zagging the streets of the town to see the Cathedral, the roman theatre, the Parque Genovés and the City Hall. A lovely craft market at City Hall was great for souvenir shopping - I found a fab pair of Alice in Wonderland earrings. We also found a nice bar here for a restorative beer, before meandering on and heading back to the ship along the seafront. An afternoon of boardgames in Brodie's was a great alternative to the incredibly strong sunshine in port.Les mer
