  • More Jewish History

    The first synagogue in Amsterdam was built in 1642 by Portuguese refugees from the Spanish Inquisition.

    These Jewish refugees had been forced to convert to Catholicism. The only other option was being burned at the stake

    For the first 200 years, services were held in Portuguese. They also had to bring rabbis from elsewhere in Europe to teach them Hebrew and Jewish law

  • Stumbling stones

    In the 1990s, a Dutch artist created these stumbling stones - set in the pavement with the intention of passersby to stumble over them. They are set unevenly in the ground

    Each block carries the name of a Holocaust victim, including the camp where they died.

    The artist continues his work today, at the age of 77, installing stones in many countries

    Our guide said antisemitism is on the rise even here, in a country that had welcomed and supported Jews for hundreds of years.
