    Getting an (early?) start

    20 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

We packed up the RV and decided to leave at night to get a head start on the drive. Hopefully we can get a few hours down the road so our drive tomorrow (almost all the way to Vegas) will be smooth. Eric is a trooper and willing to drive at night!

We already had a mini-adventure: about 10 miles away from home we ran over a piece of tarp with metal poles. It got stuck up underneath us and we were dragging it along so we had to make an emergency stop so Eric could rescue us. Whew!

  • Roadblock

    21 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

I was feeling so hopeful about getting down to the campground in daylight but no such luck. A few miles south of Fallon they closed our highway and we had to wait for it to reopen. Turns out a semi and a compact car squished together and it required two large tow trucks and a lot of emergency service vehicles to clear the road. 90 minutes later we are on our way. We did get to see a nice family of free range cows at least while we were waiting!Leia mais

  • Walker Lake

    21 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After our long wait we made it down to Walker Lake, where we spent the first night dry camping on our way out to Utah on our maiden RV voyage. It feels incredibly isolated out here but surprisingly the campground is quite full.Leia mais

  • And then this happened...

    21 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We almost made it out of Hawthorne when we felt a bump and something was wrong. The truck tire was completely shredded. We thought we’d be down for hours, but luckily we were in a town and AAA sent someone out immediately to replace the tire. Our second stroke of luck was that the tire was a real tire, not just a dummy. Believe it or not, we were back on the road in 45 minutes. I’ve had enough excitement for one trip already!Leia mais

  • New country

    21 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

From here on out, it’s all new road to us. When we went to Utah we turned east on the 6, so this is our first time on this part of Hwy 95. I do love the scraggly Joshua trees growing everywhere.

  • Mt Charleston

    22 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We pulled in last night in the dark and couldn’t get any pictures. To our surprise, the campground was marked “full” and the gate was closed. I muscled the gate open and we found the camp hosts who were holding a spot for us (thank goodness). This morning we woke up in a beautiful setting—I really can’t believe this is 30 minutes outside Vegas. We decided to stay an extra night since the campground is so nice and we can take the truck anywhere we need to go.Leia mais

  • Valley of Fire

    22 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

The Visitor’s Center is set into this beautiful rock formation (which surrounds the road completely). The park itself consists of a single main road and a single off-shoot road which leads to hiking. There are two campgrounds nestled amongst the rocks, which are incredibly scenic. The land is so barren and without water that even Indian tribes couldn’t locate here permanently.Leia mais

  • Mount Charleston Lodge

    22 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

At the recommendation of our very kind camp hosts, we drove up the mountain past our campsite to discover the Mt. Charleston Lodge. It’s a charming wood building with several standalone cabins rimmed in Christmas lights. We ate a dinner of chili and NY style pizza while listening to Johnny Cash and watching dusk fall over the canyon.Leia mais

  • Lake Mead

    23 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

We had initially planned to tour Hoover Dam, but after trying to find a replacement tire for the truck and before our long desert drive, we decided just to drive by Lake Mead. It has the largest water capacity of any man made reservoir in the United States, although for the last 15 years or so it has had less water than Lake Powell, just north of it. The drought conditions and population expansion dependent on the reservoir has contributed to the severe water problems in the area.Leia mais

  • Route 66

    23 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We decided to take the long cut and get off the interstate so we could drive a stretch of Route 66. We joined up in the town of Kingman and next up was Hackberry. Hard to imagine this being the first road that linked the entire country.Leia mais

  • Route 66

    23 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Bring on the funkiness of Route 66! Although the road looks like an out-of-the-way rural backroad connecting tiny rural areas. Which is basically what it was. The railroad is still running strong through the whole area.Leia mais

  • And the winner of the cuteness contest:

    23 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌫 23 °C

SELIGMAN, AZ! This adorable town feels like the heartland of Route 66. I believe a couple of brothers decided to keep the feel of Route 66 and made it their life’s mission to maintain the kitschy feel of the town. It is absolutely worth a trip in of itself if anyone has the time! We drove through when most things were closed but we would looove to come back.Leia mais

  • Williams, AZ

    23 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌫 15 °C

And we made it into Williams, Arizona for the night. This was the last town to be bypassed by the interstate. We are staying at a charming RV park associated with the Grand Canyon Hotel & Railway, which employs a beautiful passenger train to carry people up to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon every day. We went to downtown Williams, which is a charming tourist attraction (not trap!) with restaurants and boutique shops, many with the Route 66 theme. Another town we would love to spend more time in!Leia mais

  • Driving to the Grand Canyon

    24 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

On our way to the park of the day, we couldn’t help but stop in Valle. This gas station is all decked out in Route 66 style complete with retro cars and trucks. I also loved the throwback campground across the street called Bedrock. They had the huge Fred sign, a themed playground for kids, and even a Dino skeleton.Leia mais

  • Grand Canyon Visitor Center

    24 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We made it up to the South Rim (despite being afraid the highway would be closed from a forest fire the day before) and the facilities are beautiful. They have an entire village up here complete with visitors center, several spectacular lodges, bookstores and more. It’s definitely the off season but I can imagine this place would be a DISASTER during tourist season.Leia mais

  • Mather View

    24 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This is the classic view from Mather Point, a short walk from the Visitor’s Center. It’s too cool that we can take all the time we want to hang out and really take in the views without jostling for the best position. The sun is briiight today but the weather is perfect-mid 70s with a gentle breeze.Leia mais
