  • Lea Lakes

    29 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

So our campground is actually at one of the bottomless lakes, called Lea Lake. As we read more about the park, we discovered that each of the lakes is a sinkhole that developed due to soft ground. Since it’s only about 15 minutes outside of town, the lakes are a popular destination for local families wanting to swim and picnic.Leia mais

  • Bottomless Lakes SP

    28 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

We arrived before dark (yay!) to a cute little loop set right next to a lake. To our surprise, a truck and mini trailer were parked in our reserved spot, and after a conversation with a nice couple from Quebec we realized the reservation system was VERY confusing. In any case, they moved over a few spots to an unreserved site and we pulled into our beautiful lakefront site.

We took a few minutes and sat out to watch the sunset over the lake through the trees. The bats were swooping all around by the shore eating bugs and the wind started picking up. Later the wind was howling and we brought in the chairs before they blew into the lake! Even inside the RV we could feel the gusts shaking us back and forth.

  • Entering Roswell

    28 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Roswell turns out to be a good-sized town of 35,000 people. There’s an eclectic mix of dynamics: small-town vibe, alien themes, industry from days gone by, and southwestern style. There is something here for everyone and we can’t wait to see it tomorrow!Leia mais

  • The Organ Mountains

    28 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today we went down to the (huge) White Sands Army Base to see the missile museum. Along our drive we had a great view of the Organ Mountains, which we figure earned their name by resembling a massive pipe organ. Eric (lucky duck) spotted several cacti with blooming red flowers and a roadrunner.

We drove along the White Sands National Monument, which is the world’s largest deposit of gypsum sand (which evidently stays cool to the touch regardless of the blazing sun overhead).

  • Oliver Lee Memorial State Park

    28 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We stayed in a state park about 20 minutes outside Alomogordo, which is a sizable town in this area. It was quite isolated and quiet, which is just how we like it. The campground was nestled into the base of the Sacramento Mountains (a familiar name this far from home), and we had a view of the entire valley for what seemed to be hundreds of miles.Leia mais

  • Dusk

    27 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

We’ve noticed that the dark arrives abruptly here. It hits dusk and after about 15 minutes it is pitch black, no light. We were racing the sun to get into our site tonight and we got beat by about 10 minutes. Once we were settled in, we were treated to the nearby sounds of birds, crickets, and absolutely nothing else :-)Leia mais

  • Turning East

    27 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Now we’re turning east and our highway will run just north of the White Sands Missile Testing Range.

Since entering Arizona we have seen a zillion trains 🚂 mostly running along side us. Most days we’ve seen eight or more, mostly carrying freight, other than at the Grand Canyon and in Santa Fe (passenger trains).Leia mais

  • The Rio Grande

    27 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

I pictured the Rio Grande being large and impressive, big and muddy like the Mississippi. It’s a bit smaller and less “grand” than I expected, muuuch smaller than the Sacramento. The valley it produces, however, is a sea of green amongst the desert and is quite scenic.Leia mais

  • The mountains

    26 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Next we drove up to a little state park less than 10 miles out of town (Hyde Memorial). I wanted to see if we got high enough up if we could see the valley laid out before us. Before we knew it we were in a proper forest with a winding road that took us above 9,000 feet!Leia mais

  • Exploring Santa Fe

    26 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Today we decided to take our own driving tour of Santa Fe. We started off at the historic Plaza Cafe with the best sopapillas in New Mexico (I agree with the claim). They are these doughy fried triangles that you dip in honey-yum! We stopped by the Palace of Governors (the oldest continuously occupied public building in the U.S.) which was built in 1610 by the Spanish to help govern the Southwest.

The city of Santa Fe is incredibly charming. It’s evident it was an old city, with narrow streets and Pueblo architecture. We found ourselves winding our way up residential streets past charming adobe houses with wisteria vines climbing up the sides. The downtown had revitalized their rail yard district into an arts and dining center. It’s definitely a beautiful city, and one I would love to come back to again.

  • Cochiti Lake

    26 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Woke up at a beautiful & isolated state park campground that was just recently renovated. It’s nice to be out of the city and with a little more space since we’ve been staying mostly at RV parks up until this point.

It looks like sweltering hot country, but the weather has actually been mild—mid 70s with a constant breeze. Good time of year.

  • Entering New Mexico

    25 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

Today was a big day. We saw Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest, the Painted Desert, and drove 400+ miles. Finally we entered New Mexico, passed through Albuquerque, and made it up to our campground in Cochiti State Park.

Can you imagine how we felt when we pulled into the campground at 10:30 pm and there was someone parked and settled into our reserved spot? Lucky for us the camp host settled the problem right away and evicted the squatters. Hah! Can’t believe I just called someone with a Allegro motorhome a squatter!

  • The Painted Desert

    25 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

The painted desert is a vast area of colored rock and dunes through the Southwest, extending across multiple states. This location is one of the best and easiest places to see it. The old Route 66 used to run through the park, and we spotted an old Studebaker on the side of the abandoned road.Leia mais

  • Driving north

    25 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Now we are headed up north through the Petrified Forest National Park up to the Painted Desert Park. Our view from the RV is really incredible since we sit up high and are surrounded with windows; it’s like being in a fancy passenger train car with panoramic views through dome windows.Leia mais

  • Petrified Forest

    25 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We stopped at the Rainbow Forest Museum & Visitors Center and found they had the most amazing display of petrified wood throughout the forest. Eric had seen a petrified forest before, but it was my first time learning about how it forms when the organic material inside a tree is replaced with minerals. I think this forest was 200 million years old.Leia mais

  • Holbrook

    25 de abril de 2018, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

What a funky little town! We turned off here to head towards the Petrified Forest and we were treated to a bunch of relics from Route 66.

Have you stayed in a wigwam lately?

    Why are there dinosaurs?

What happened on this poor road?
