      World's best beef jerky

      We pulled over based on a sign on the side of the road to try the world's best beef jerky (according to them...) as I don't actually remember ever trying it. Inside we found a quirky gift shop full of weird little gadgets, mostly native American related, and of course the jerky. We accidentally bought a buffalo one, but I'm assuming beef is similar :D it was actually really nice salty, peppery and stringy, but tender at the same time!Læs mere

      Driving past LA

      As we actually stopped before La the night before, it took about 2 hours just to drive around it on the North. It really surprises us how quickly it turned dry and desert like, especially after the super green coastline of the last few days, the contrast was incredible. I think I squealed a little bit, when a tumbleweed first rolled across the road of us.Læs mere

      Almost staying in LA

      A bit after 5 we gave up on finding Ester néni that night, and found a motel around where we were, which happened to be Ventura. For dinner we went to a nearby taco place. We ordered some tacos and some nachos, both of which were quite good, and they were fun to spice up with this from the free salad bar, which had 6-8 different sauces, and toppings, like extra onions, cilantro, lime, etc. On a big TV they had baseball going on, it was Hugo's favourite the Oakland Athletics playing against the dodgers, completely winning too. Seamus ordered a beer, which came in an enormous and heavy chalice. I ordered a margarita, as I thought it would be nice to add to the Mexican theme, especially as it was the same price as a beer. I was quite surprised when it arrived in the same glass as Seamus's beer... I managed to drink about 2/3 of it and then gave up. We fell asleep watching more funny American TV.Læs mere

      Golf n' stuff

      As we were driving to LA, we could still not get in contact with Ester néni, who we were supposed to stay with, so as a fun birthday event, and also to kill some time, we pulled over when we saw the sign for minigolf, and some enormous building that promised elaborate golfing fun. In the end it wasn't sooo crazy, but it was still pretty fun. Of course Seamus completely beat me in the game, but I managed to not get too upset about sucking at golf, and even had some cool successful shots. The real fun actually came when we went inside, and played with the arcade machines. It is pretty cool to be an adult, and have the power to waste as much money in it, as you want! Although I think we only got 7 dollars worth of tokens between us, so it wasn't even too crazy spending. A the way it works, is you use tokens to play with all kinds of games, and depending on how you do, you get tickets that the machine spits out. At the end you can buy different little silly prizes with your tickets. We played 3 types of ball throwing games:ski ball (I was the best at this, I managed to get it into the highest 10000 point hole), basketball, and American football. Surprisingly we won most of our tickets with American football out of these. Our most successful game out of all was kungfu panda, where you had to hit 1 out of 6 drums, based on where a dumpling was coming so that the panda could kungfu it away. Seamus had an amazing run on this, after which the machine spent about a minute spitting out 250 tickets. It was amazing, we felt like we won the lottery. I played dance dance revolution for the first time, which I was pretty bad at even at the easy setting, and then Seamus decided to set it extra hard for my second run, on which I scored an impressive 0%,even though I was basically just running in place trying to hit anything by luck. In the end we got to feed all our tickets to a counting machine, which was also really fun to do with the longer tickets, and then we got to choose some silly stuff from the store. We were actually mostly excited about the cheapest items, we got some funny instant tattoos, a sticky spiderman, and a zombie that grows 6 times in size when addax to water.Læs mere

      Santa Barbara County courthouse

      This courthouse was built in Spanish revival colonial style, which is really popular in all of Santa Barbara: as we could see from the view from the top of the tower, there were similar red tiled buildings all around us. This is an active courthouse that is almost completely empty for the public. It was really cool to walk around, see what court hearings were scheduled for the day, go inside the law library, go inside the big and decorated court room, where weddings are held (and according to the sign, you are allowed to go in, even if one is in progress). Also the halls were decorated with murals of historic events, like argentinian pirates arriving to the city, or the Spanish themselves arriving and meeting with the Indians (very parks and recreation style, except they didn't actually show the brutality as much :D).Læs mere

      Pismo beach

      Another pretty beach full of surfers. They had a cool pier but unfortunately we couldn't go on top as it was closed for repairs. It didn't mean we couldn't go underneath though :D after that we had the best clam chowder ive ever had and a BLT in a little cafe near the beach. Oh, before the chowder we actually had a cinnamon roll, as they have a shop that sells only cinnamon rolls, but about 8 different types, we got a basic one with a side of cream cheese frosting.       Morning walk in Morro Bay

      We woke up to a slightly cloudy day, but went to look around the town we stayed at for a short while. We had some sweet apple pastry for breakfast, and I got a small coffee with it: which was easily 3 dl big, and I could have had free refills on it if it wasn't enough... Unfortunately the town's only famous sight, the skateboard museum was closed, so we could only look at it from the outside. In the harbour I found a guy washing out some containers, and two big seals circling around under him, shouting in their weird load voices. I think we heard the same seal from our bedroom in the morning too.Læs mere

      Our first night at an inn

      We found an actual Inn on airbnb for quite a good price, and it was just far enough to get there after dark, but still have dinner. It was actually quite nice inside, the room was really enormous, and there was an ice machine a few meters outside out door (I've no idea what Americans actually do with ice at a motel, but it seems to be a thing they have at every place). We wanted to try chowder while we were still at the seaside, so that's what we both ordered. It was nice, but not amazing (spoiler for the future, as I am writing this a bit late: the next day we went to a place that is famous for its chowder, and it tasted much much better). We forgot to acquire cake for me, but we had a big portion of warm brownie topped with vanilla ice cream.Læs mere

      Stopping for coffee with a surprise

      After a picnic lunch, I became super sleepy and was dosing off all the time, missing the beautiful views. So after we tried having a short nap that didn't really help we mage the sensible decision and stopped for coffee. It made us grateful that we brought a picnic - this place had small pastries for 9-10 dollars each, we didn't even dare to look at other food prices... On the way back to the car, I want up to a tree to look at its unusual flowers and then to my amazement a hummingbird flew up to it. In my excitement all I could do was keep shouting, "look Seamus, a kolibri" to which he kept asking what a kolibri was, and I just kept saying, a kolibri, a kolibri! Finally he spotted the bird too, so he informed me it's name was a hummingbird. It was really incredible to me to see one just hanging out in front of a bar. In general there seems to be much more wildlife about, and lots of them are pretty and exciting and new for us. Almost every minute you can spot a hawk circling around the sky as well, they are also beautiful.Læs mere

      Pfeiffer beach

      This beaches was a tiny bit off the main 101 road, and we did have to pay 10 dollars for parking, but it was worth it for me as it was really beautiful. I wanted to go to this beach because I read that it had purple sand, which did prove to be true - although it is not bright purple of course, but a light coating of purple sand on top of the normal one. We took some time to explore the rocks, me barefoot, Seamus in his new super grippy boating sneakers. There were lot of animals around and pretty views of course. Both on the way in an out we had to drive through a smallish river, and we chose to do it in the fastest possible speed (we did rent an suv after all) which covered all the front of the windows completely in water and was great fun. We drove back to do it an extra time before leaving.Læs mere
