    Final dinner in Vienna with the group at Heindls Schmarren & Palatschinkenkuchl near the Danube.

    Naturally, Kaiserschmarren had to make another appearance 😄

    The meal turned into a full Austrian feast:

    * Spargel soup
    * Schnitzel, asparagus, and potatoes
    * Erdbeer Topfen dessert
    * Beef soup with Grießnockerln
    * Paprika Palatschinken
    * and finishing off leftover Kaiserschmarren from the table

    After dinner, it was finally time to say goodbye to our friends before everyone headed home the next day.    Read more

    Maribor Walking Tour – Part 1

    May 18 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

    The day started with retrieving the car from Vienna’s park-and-ride lot — definitely the budget-friendly choice, though not without some logistical gymnastics 😄

    From there, we headed straight to Maribor and parked near the beautiful Drava River waterfront.

    First priority: lunch at Gril Ranca. Pljeskavica for lunch — a good reminder that Slovenia’s Yugoslav history means Balkan cuisine is very much part of the local culture.

    Afterwards we explored the city:

    * the lovely riverside promenade with flowers, swans, and cafés
    * the famous Old Vine House with the oldest vine in the world growing up the façade
    * medieval alleyways
    * the beautiful Main Square with its town hall and fountain
    * and finally the cathedral

    Maribor feels relaxed, elegant, and very livable.    Read more

    Rooster Coffee / Tovarna Kave

    What a fantastic little coffee discovery.

    Rooster Coffee serves beans from Tovarna Kave — and I’m fairly certain the roaster himself was working as barista when we visited.

    Excellent coffee, great atmosphere, and another reminder that specialty coffee culture has quietly spread into even smaller Slovenian cities.Read more

    Maribor Walking Tour – Part 2

    May 18 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    After coffee we continued exploring Maribor, including a quick stop at Maribor Castle — surprisingly compact for a castle sitting in the middle of the city.

    From there we wandered slowly back toward the river through the old Jewish quarter and past the synagogue before eventually returning to the waterfront.Read more

    Sibon Wine Resort

    May 18–19 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    From Maribor we drove onward into the rolling wine hills around Jeruzalem.

    This landscape is ridiculously beautiful: vineyards covering every hill, tiny churches perched on ridges, green valleys, winding roads, and little villages tucked into the scenery.

    Tonight’s home: Sibon Wine Resort.
    Spa, pool, wine, patio views, restaurant — the whole place feels wonderfully calm and luxurious.

    We also reunited with my mom and Thomas here one last time before they continued their journey back toward Germany.

    Jeruzalem

    May 19 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    After breakfast at Sibon Wine Resort, it was time to say goodbye to mom and Thomas before everyone continued their journeys in different directions.

    Before leaving the region, Sanjay and I stopped a few more times along the roads around Jeruzalem just to soak in the scenery one last time. Rolling vineyards, churches on hilltops, winding roads, endless green landscapes — honestly one of the most beautiful wine regions I’ve seen anywhere.Read more

    Maderkin Breg Lookout Tower

    May 19 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    Since we were already so close to the border, we couldn’t resist quickly hopping into Croatia just to say we had been there 😄

    Our destination: Maderkin Breg Lookout Tower — the tower we had actually spotted from the pool deck at Sibon.

    The views from the top stretch across the wine regions on both sides of the Slovenian-Croatian border. But the funniest feature might be the built-in organ inside the tower:
    insert 1 Euro, choose a song, and the entire tower starts playing music.

    Ptuj Castle

    May 19 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    Next stop: Ptuj Castle.

    The castle overlooks the town beautifully and houses multiple exhibitions inside. Historic rooms, artifacts, and fantastic views over the rooftops of Ptuj and the surrounding countryside. Very impressive — and very photogenic.Read more

    Ptuj

    Ptuj itself feels wonderfully quaint: cobblestone streets, colorful facades, and quiet old-town charm.

    One highlight was the famous Ptuj Town Tower — also called the Guardian of Time. The exhibition inside explains the fascinating mechanics of the clock tower, including one of the only still-functioning granite-block pendulums driving a clock system. The pendulum is 21 meters long, and each swing takes 8.9 seconds.

    Gostilna Sokol

    By the time we reached Ljubljana it was already fairly late, so we went straight to dinner at Gostilna Sokol.

    This restaurant appeared on so many recommendation lists during my research that we had to try it. Yes, it’s a little touristy — but the traditional Slovenian food was genuinely very solid and made for a great introduction to our Ljubljana stay.Read more

    Le Petit Café

    Breakfast at Le Petit Cafe was the perfect relaxed start into the day.

    Good food, friendly service, and wonderfully close to the hotel — though to be fair, Ljubljana is so compact and walkable that basically everything feels close.Read more

    Stow – Mestni Muzej

    Stow Coffee Roasters is clearly the specialty coffee name in Ljubljana, and their location inside the city museum is beautifully designed.

    What stood out most though: the passion of the staff. The two women working there genuinely loved coffee and guiding customers through the beans and brewing methods. I ordered a pour-over and got one of the best coffee experiences of the trip so far.

    The only problem? The coffee I loved wasn’t available as beans at this particular location.
    So obviously I now “had” to visit their other cafés too 😄    Read more

    Escobar Coffee Roaster

    May 20 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    This stop turned into one of my favourite coffee stories of the trip.

    Escobar Coffee Roaster had shown up in my research and happened to be near the highway toward Postojna Cave — so we decided to stop.

    The roads got narrower… and narrower… until we ended up in what looked very much like somebody’s backyard. Tiny sign on a garage door: Escobar.

    I knocked, opened the door, and found a surprised woman wearing headphones while packing coffee beans. Jackpot 😄

    Turns out: this was the roastery — literally in their garage. Soon her husband Omar joined us, and the next half hour turned into pure coffee nerding:
    freshly roasted beans straight out of the roaster, discussions about origins, and their incredible story.

    Omar grew up on a coffee farm in Honduras, met his Slovenian wife Katja while working on a cruise ship, and together they eventually settled in Slovenia to start their own roastery.

    Apparently they now also have a proper café in nearby Vrhnika… which admittedly would have been much easier to visit 😄
    But then I would never have met Omar and Katja — and I would have one less great travel story.    Read more

    Postojna Cave

    May 20 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    Postojna Cave is absolutely wild.

    First, you board a little train that takes you ten minutes deep into the mountain before the walking tour even begins.

    Then follows 1.5 hours through a surreal underground world of stalactites, stalagmites, underground lakes, glittering rock formations, and the famous “baby dragons” (olm salamanders).

    At several moments I genuinely felt like one of the Seven Dwarfs heading into the mines 😄    Read more

    Predjama Castle

    May 20 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

    And then somehow Slovenia delivered yet another completely unbelievable location: Predjama Castle.

    Built directly into the mouth of a cave, the castle honestly feels like something straight out of fantasy literature. Helm’s Deep from Lord of the Rings immediately came to mind.

    Before even entering, I had to stop for a Brews & Views coffee moment with the castle in the background.

    Inside, the castle somehow felt surprisingly livable too — if you ignore the damp cave atmosphere 😄    Read more

    Gostilna Šestica

    May 20 in Slovenia ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

    Back in Ljubljana we had dinner at Gostilna Šestica.

    The food itself was excellent:

    bear goulash
    venison steak
    local wine

    Very hearty and very Slovenian.

    The service however felt a bit snobbier than most places we’ve experienced on this trip — including actively pushing for tips and bringing twice the amount of wine ordered. Not the end of the world, but slightly off compared to the warmth we experienced elsewhere in Slovenia.Read more

    Moji Štruklji

    Final stop of the evening: Moji Štruklji.

    Štruklji are one of Slovenia’s classic comfort foods — rolled dough dishes that can be savory or sweet depending on the filling.

    Since dinner had already happened, we naturally went sweet:

    Ljubljana Food Tour

    May 21 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: food tours are the best way to explore a city.

    You get local food, which comes with local history, which comes with stories — and while moving from stop to stop, you slowly learn how the city itself fits together.

    Our Ljubljana Food Tour started with a tiny bit of chaos: apparently the meeting point instructions still need some fine-tuning 😄
    We were waiting on one side of the Dragon Bridge while the guide waited on the other. Thankfully, after a short moment of panic, we found each other and the tour could begin.

    Stops included:

    - Pekarna Pečjak — burek with beef, cottage cheese, and spinach
    - Kodila Gourmet & Bistro Market — charcuterie platter with local meats, cheese, and Slovenian white wine
    - Tartufi Deli Shop — truffle oils, salts, spreads, and spices from around Slovenia
    - Le Potica — mini potica cakes
    - Klobasarna — classic Slovenian sausage with horseradish and mustard
    - Hiša Pod Gradom — goulash, štruklji, and local red wine
    - Grajska Vinoteka inside Ljubljana Castle — fruit-filled Kobarid štruklji

    The ending at the castle was especially interesting because we could hear music echoing up from the city below. Turns out Ljubljana was celebrating high school graduates with a giant festival on the square near our hotel. By the early afternoon it had become a full-on party, and hearing the music drift all the way up to the castle was surreal.    Read more

    Ljubljana Castle

    May 21 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

    Ljubljana Castle sits beautifully above the city and dominates the skyline.

    One interesting detail: before becoming a museum and public gathering space, the castle served as a prison during Habsburg times. Which honestly explains why the interiors feel very different from the lavish castles elsewhere in Europe — there isn’t much old royal furniture or aristocratic decoration.

    Instead, the castle has been transformed into a fantastic public space with exhibitions, restaurants, event venues, and amazing viewpoints over Ljubljana.    Read more

    Tri Marije Coffee

    May 21 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

    Coffee stop number one of the afternoon: Tri Marije Coffee — a tiny coffee cart located at the public market.

    And honestly? Outstanding coffee.

    I chatted with the barista for quite a while and eventually walked away with:

    - two bags of beans
    - and a cappuccino featuring their mango milkshake espresso combination

    Stow 2 Go

    May 21 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

    Since I still couldn’t get the beans I wanted from the earlier Stow location, I headed to Stow 2 Go in the city center.

    Again: super passionate staff and excellent atmosphere.
    Unfortunately… still no beans.

    But then my brain suddenly connected the dots:
    hadn’t I seen those exact beans earlier at Tri Marije?

    So I basically sprinted back across town 😄

    After a quick sorbet stop at Vigo Ice Cream, we made our final coffee stop of the day at Črno Zrno.

    Another lovely café with a knowledgeable barista, excellent cappuccino, and naturally… more beans.

    Koželj Wines

    As the trip slowly approaches its final stretch, Sanjay and I decided to simply sit down and enjoy a quiet glass of wine in Ljubljana’s old town.

    Koželj Wines turned out to be an incredible Slovenian wine bar with extremely knowledgeable staff. We asked for sparkling white and rosé recommendations — and they absolutely delivered.

    Restaurant Breg & Evening Walk

    Final dinner of the evening at Breg after a relaxed walk through the city.

    Wonderful service — including a very friendly waiter who kept addressing me as “Mister Marcus,” which admittedly made me laugh every single time 😄

    The menu became one final celebration of Slovenian cuisine:

    - local wines
    - beef tongue salad
    - trout pâté
    - veal liver with radicchio and štruklji
    - grilled octopus

    Velika Planina

    May 22 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

    Today started early — very early 😄

    Packing bags, loading the car, grabbing breakfast sandwiches, checking out of the hotel… the whole operation ran like a well-oiled machine because we absolutely had to catch the hourly gondola up to Velika Planina.

    First gondola. Then chairlift. And finally: the high alpine plateau itself.

    The hike up there was absolutely magical. Tiny shepherd villages scattered across rolling mountain meadows, little churches, fences, flowers everywhere, butterflies drifting through the air, and those unbelievably cute traditional huts.

    We were slightly early in the season, so the shepherds and cows hadn’t arrived yet — but the spring flowers made the landscape feel even more idyllic.

    After about 7 km and three hours of hiking, we eventually returned to the chairlift tired, happy, and completely charmed by Velika Planina.    Read more
