  • Day 50. Old Town Semarang.

    February 24, 2025 in Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Our 1st stop today was in Old Town Semarang and it was a sorry site. The nicest thing we saw was a plumeria tree.... we went inside an old mosque. The organ was 300 years old and no longer in use.

  • Day 51. Jakarta, Indonesia.

    February 25, 2025 in Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Very busy port, the busiest one we've encountered. There were over 50-100 ships in the harbor waiting to come into port for the last several miles. I'm watching from our balcony as we slowly come pierside. We were welcomed by an 11 piece band and traditional dancers. It's 88⁰ at 1:55pm Tuesday.Read more

  • Day 54. Singapore.

    February 28, 2025 in Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

We started our day at the Merlion statue, which is part Mermaid, part lion. Singapore means lion in Malays. The person who named the country "Singapore" thought he saw a lion when he arrived, though the locals believe he saw a tiger since there are no lions here. This huge Merlion is a fun tourist stop. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable in explaining so much of their rich heritage. She told us that Singapore is a nice place to live, but there are many drawbacks that cause a lot of anxiety for the locals. 90% of the people live in the city. They have to get on a waiting list and must be married to buy a home (which is really an apartment/condo) and it can take 3-5 years to get a home. It's very common for newlyweds to live with their parents after they get married for several tlyears till they get their own home. The traffic is a 1000 times better here than Bali & Jakarta because the government controls how many cars can be licensed here and they pay almost as much for a 10 year license plate as they do for a 1 BR condo (roughly $100K). There are over 6 million people in Singapore, but the country imports all of it's food from Malaysia. There is very little Green space to have a garden. Only 15% of their food is grown here. Also, they don't have their own water. They import it from Malaysia too. However, Malaysia is running low on water, so they've informed Singapore that they're no longer providing it after 2062. Medical and retirement are also worrisome because there isn't a pension system here. They put 20% of their paycheck into a government operated fund and their employer pays 12% into it. With inflation, many are opting to work past their retirement age of 60 (soon to be 67) because they're concerned that their money won't last.Read more

  • Day 55. Singapore. (Day 2, Stop #3)

    March 1, 2025 in Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 88 °F

Stop #3 of our tour today took us to a massive "food court" type place where we could get food from just about any country in the world. I had Japanese. Beth had Chinese. Trish had Mexican. This place was huge, I walked around for 10 minutes trying to figure out what I wanted to eat, and still didn't see all of it. We went thru Chinatown on the way back to the ship and saw this cool Indian temple.Read more

  • Day 57. Kuala Lumpur/Putrajay, Malaysia

    March 3, 2025 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

Our 1st stop was at a Botanical Garden. Unfortunately, we didn't see many flowers because they were at the end of their blooming season. I was so excited when I saw a beautiful flower that I walked off the path to get a close-up. 2 steps off the path, and I sank in mud up past my ankles. The area was all grass, except for the holes under the grass.... I had to find an irrigation puddle to put my feet in to clean off some of the mud up to my ankles. I was a mess!Read more

  • Day 57. Putrajaya, Malaysia

    March 3, 2025, Strait of Malacca ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

On the way to our 2nd stop, we rode past the government buildings of Putrajaya. An oil company donated 200+ hectares (1 hectare=2.5 acres) to the government to build their government office buildings. Every building's architecture is different. I was astounded by the shapes and exteriors of the buildings. The project was completed in 1989.Read more

  • Day 57. Putrajaya.

    March 4, 2025, Strait of Malacca ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

We had another nice sunset tonight. The ship had an Oscar's night in the theater and showed a rerun of the awards show. They had a red carpet for us as we entered the theater, as well as chocolates, champagne, and academy award drinks.Read more

  • Day 60. Phuket, Thailand.

    March 6, 2025 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 88 °F

5 stops today. Bangrong community for pineapple tea and crafting, a pineapple farm, a rubber harvesting farm, coconuts from tree to mouth, and a delicious prawns pad Thai lunch. Here are pictures from stops 1 & 2. We put glitter on these handbags so we would have a souvenir from Thailand. Stop 2 was a Pineapple farm where we learned how to peel and cut pinapple, as well as the cooperative nature of these farmers. We also took turns cutting pineapples just like the farmers do.Read more
