    Banteay Srei Temple

    After leaving Kbal Spean, we drove by tuk tuk to the ruins of Banteay Srei Temple, which is on the way back to Siem Reap. Banteay Srei is the most elaborately decorated of all Angkor’s monuments, its walls, false doors, lintels and exotic soaring pediments all richly embellished with floral motifs and Ramayana scenes. Banteay Srei was built not by a king, but by two local dignitaries, and as a result it was required to be somewhat smaller in scale then the temples built by kings. Czytaj więcej

    Angkor Thom - Baphuon

    In the morning we went back to Angkor Thom to visit complexes that we did not go to on Christmas Day.

    We started with the imposing Baphuon, the eleventh-century state-temple of Udayadityavarman II. At the end of a long causeway rises the temple itself, centered on a mighty central pyramid (24m high) consisting of five steep tiers divided by galleries into three enclosures. The entire west-facing wall at the base of the pyramid has been carved into the form of a gigantic reclining Buddha, although it is a little difficult to make out at first, both live and in the photos.

    Restoration of Baphuon was particularly difficult. In 1959 French architects decided that the only way to save Baphuon from collapse was to dismantle it piece by piece and then put it all back together again. After the temple dismantled, though, war broke out. Work was abandoned in 1971. After gaining control, the Khmer Rouge decided to destroy all of the archaeological records. When restoration work restarted in 1995, conservators were faced with “a three-dimensional, 300,000-piece puzzle to which we had lost the picture”. Restoration wasn’t completed until 2011, and even after completion many unidentified stones can still be seen laid out around the complex.     Czytaj więcej

    On the Road Again

    Craig and I had our last breakfast in Siem Reap this morning before hitting the road for Preah Vihear. I had my usual rice noodle soup with a delicious broth and Craig had a nice omelette.

    We took a tuk-tuk to mini van pick up. The ride was 3 hours long through the countryside. I did my best to take some photos looking through the front windshield or door. These photos are unedited - no cropping. They capture rural Cambodian life. From agriculture, kids going to school on a makeshift bus, and the usual cattle herding on the road.     Koh Ker temple

    After a roadside lunch near Preah Vihear, we drove a couple hours south to another set of Angkor ruins called Koh Ker.
    Koh Ker was briefly capital of the Angkorian empire in the 10th century. The ruins have been largely left to be overtaken by the jungle, and there are a lot of uncleared mines in the are, but the remaining ruins are quite impressive. Koh Ker’s major temple complex is Prasat Thom, consisting of three enclosures laid out in a row with the sanctuary at the center of the final courtyard. Beyond the moat on the far side is the Prang, a 110 ft-high, seven-tiered sandstone ziggurat that can be climbed by means of wooden stairs on one side.
    We also visited a few of the smaller temples scattered around the 40-acre Koh Ker site, including Prasat Pram, with five (pram) towers (four of brick, one of laterite), two of which are being slowly strangled by fig trees.
    After the temples, we had a fairly long car ride back to our guesthouse in the town of Preah Vihear.     Czytaj więcej

    Preah Vihear temple

    We hired car and driver for the day and spent the morning driving about 1 1/2 hours to Prasat Preah Vihear, an ancient Angkor temple (and now a World Heritage Site) located in a dramatic mountaintop setting along the long-disputed Thai-Cambodian border. Construction of the temple took place from the 9th through the 12th centuries and was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. In two separate rulings (the most recent in 2013), the International Court of Justice has ruled that the temple belongs to Cambodia. Czytaj więcej

    Enter Sem Monourom

    After a few days exploring several (but by no means all!) of the major Angkor temples, we headed east to the fairly small town of Sen Monourom, the capital of Mondulkiri Province. After a crowded, 9-hour van ride on NY Eve, we were greeted with some much appreciated chilly weather! New Year's Eve was very uneventful. There wasn't much going on in town, and we went to bed around 11:00. The next morning after breakfast we took a walk around town. The town was lively, with many local shops and a busy market lined a few streets. We stayed in a nice guesthouse run by an Italian guy, which had an excellent Italian restaurant, which we ate at all three nights we were in town. Czytaj więcej

    Elephants at Play

    Craig and I made a 2-day visit to the Mondulkiri Project, a great organization not too far from where we were staying in Sen Monoroum. The project is an NGO that rescues elephants from farming and elephant riding groups, where they are often abused and under-nourished. Also, Cambodia has lost much of its forests to development and, particularly during COVID, to clear-cutting for farming, and in the process elephants have lost their food sources and habitats.

    We met Sofia and Princess and two other elephants (can’t remember their names). At the Modulkiri Project, these gentle giants wonder freely in forested property, are given medical care if needed, and get to eat! We had fun feeding them bananas, and observed them in their habitat. Craig swam with the elephants, fed them, and helped with a bath! The next day - a 16 km trek.     Czytaj więcej

    A Beautiful Trek

    Let’s start with the night before! We and a couple from NZ were the only guests at the project camp that night. We had a nice dinner featuring a traditional soup cooked in a bamboo tube over a campfire. Dinner was followed by rice wine drinking games with our new NZ friends, led by our trek guide. To say the least, some of us did not fare well with the games!
    After much needed sleep in our hammocks with mosquito netting, we had a breakfast of (fairly dry) banana pancakes.
    After breakfast we set off on an 18-km trek in the Mondulkiri highlands: jungle, caves, ancient forests (although sadly, much of the forest has recently been clear-cut to plant crops), waterfalls, and fields of rice!     Irrawaddy Dolphins

    Today we took the ferry back over to Kratie town, which has a nice sized open market and a few small hotels and restaurants along the river and further inland. We hired a tuk tuk driver to take us on a tour up the Mekong to the small town of Kampie, where we went out in a small boat to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins that still survive in the area. We saw 7 or 8 dolphins, mostly from a nearby river bank. The dolphins did occasionally breach, but they are much less playful than bottle nose and other ocean dwellers.

    We also visited the nearby hilltop temple complex at Phnomh Sambok, where we got a good workout on the 361 steps to the top. Finally, we visited Wat Tasar Moi Roí (Roi (“Pagoda of One Hundred Columns”) in the nearby town of Sambor, and had lunch at a stall across the street before heading back to Kratie, where we walked around and bought some rambutans before heading back out to Koh Tong Island.     Koh Tong

    Kratie (also spelled Kracheh) is the capital of a province of the same name in northeastern Cambodia. We were there from January 4-7.
    The minivan ride from Sen Monorom to Kratie was about 6 hours. We had lunch at a restaurant along the river, found an ATM to take out some cash, and then took a tuk tuk to the ferry out to the lovely Kaoh Trong island in the middle of the Mekong. There is a frequent ferry that takes people (and motorbikes, tuk tuks, etc.) back and forth between the island and the mainland. Everything from supplies, food, and livestock is transferred via the ferry.

    We spent 3 nights on Koh Trong at a very nice resort called the Rajabori Villas. On the evening of the 4th after arriving, we borrowed bicycles from the hotel and rode around the island, past beautiful rice patties, pomelo orchards, and traditional island homes. The only village on the island is very small. People were nice and the school kids enjoyed seeing foreign visitors on bikes! We enjoyed the ride so much we took another bike ride around the island two days later.     Czytaj więcej
