A few days exploring the chaotic streets, hidden alleyways filled with the smell of burning joss sticks, historic temples, art, history and (especially) lots of marvelous food has given us wonderful memories of Hanoi. Today we are off to Halong Bay.Read more

  • The Descending Dragon - Halong Bay

    October 28, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

I had wanted to visit Ha Long Bay (Descending Dragon) for as long as I can remember. The nearly 2000 towering lime cliff islands and emerald waters that make up this UNESCO World Heritage site did not disappoint. Craig and I also went on a bike trip on Cat Ba National Park and learned a little about the local village life on this island. We will next explore Sapa, in the mountains of northwest Vietnam!Read more

  • The Northern Wonders of Sapa

    October 30, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After our sea adventures at Ha Long bay, Craig and I ventured to North Vietnam’s trekking center - Sapa.

Sapa has beautiful landscapes of cascading rice terraces surrounded by mountains inhabited by the Hmong, Dao, Xa Pho and several other hill tribes. We spent two days with our Hmong guide Mama Mao trekking (sometimes balancing on narrow rice terraces) to a few different villages and learning of their way of life, rice harvests, and the colorful handwoven textiles that differentiate the various hill tribes. On our final day in Sapa, we took a cable car up Mount Fansipan, the highest peak in Vietnam.

Our base was a homestay with a local Hmong family that was very generous with their traditional food and rice wine! Being born in the Mekong delta region of South Vietnam, It brought me great joy to meet such kind people and to learn a little about the Hmong culture that is historically older than the Vietnamese culture. Next - We head to Ninh Binh and begin our way south.

    November 5, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We had a great time in Ninh Bình. We are headed to Hue via a sleeper bus. This bus isn’t too bad since there is some room! Our 1st sleeper bus from Hanoi to Sapa had less room on the beds but this one is much better! Can’t wait to see the Imperial of Hue!Read more

  • Dinner @ Cargo Club Restaurant- Hoi An

    November 10, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Our first course was a specialty of Hỏi An - the White Rose Dumpling. Very nice shrimp and pork dumplings with deep fried shallots and garlic. I opted for the duck breast in 5 spice and Craig chose the Vietnamese “Shaking Beef.” They were both very good and my “Vietnamese Palate” approves!Read more
