  • Mass MoCa

    21. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

From trading landscapes for mindscapes, we left quaint Williamstown behind and dove headfirst into the whimsical world of modern art at Mass MoCA in Adams, MA. Picture this: art housed in an old electrical parts factory. It’s like turning Picasso into Picass-oh!

Exploring the labyrinthine three-story building was a trip and a half. Interactive art? Check. In the music room, you could strum, drum, or summon the ghost of Beethoven on their funky instruments. And VR? We moonwalked right onto the lunar surface.

Then there were those rooms straight out of a fever dream. Tone music hallways? Got 'em. Video art galleries? Check, check, and check! And don’t forget the dark rooms where you stumble in, hoping not to bump into anyone—or poke them in the eye, like Beth almost did to poor Don in the "pink room." Classic Beth!

  • Williamstown, MA

    21. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

This afternoon was enriched with art and architectural appreciation. We were delighted that Stephen could join us as we toured the Clark Art Institute and explored the historic grounds of Williams College, founded in 1793.

The featured exhibit at the Clark Art Institute showcased the artwork of GUILLAUME LETHIÈRE, highlighting the story behind his rise to fame. In the main hall, we were all captivated by the intricate designs of the 17th-century piano and the Bureau Cabinet. Beth particularly loved the oil painting "The Louvre from the Pont Neuf" by Camille Pissarro, which reminded her of the trip to Paris she took with her mom.

Strolling around the Williams College campus, we admired the architecture and imagined what life must have been like in its early days.

  • Dinner with family!

    20. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

After parking the RV at our rustic campsite in Vermont, we hit the road on US Route 7, bound for Massachusetts and a rendezvous with Beth's family.

Naturally, Beth eagerly awaited with bated breath to capture a picture of the “Welcome to Massachusetts” sign. However, her photo op was thwarted by a series of anticlimactic signs: first, a modest “Entering Williamstown MA”, followed by a lackluster “Welcome to Massachusetts”, and finally, a “Welcome to the Berkshires”. Not quite the welcome Beth had imagined! 😂🤣😂

Once in Massachusetts, our first stop was Stephen’s (Beth’s brother) place, followed by a visit to Reen’s (Beth’s aunt). Then off to dinner where we all headed to Graczie Italian Ristorante, where Norman, Stephen’s roommate, joined us for an amazing meal! Beth savored the Short-Rib Brasato... oh my! Don indulged in one of the specials, Sirloin tips, which were just as delicious and amazing!

We swapped wild tales, reminisced like old fogeys, laughed until we snorted, caught up on all the gossip, and hatched a master plan for the next day's shenanigans.

  • Pine Hollow Campground

    20. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 88 °F

Pine Hollow Campground is quite the rustic adventure. It’s the closest camping spot we could find near our next destination, but honestly, campgrounds for big rigs near the VT/MA border are about as elusive as Bigfoot.

As we drove in, our internet connection dropped like a hot potato in the last mile, and the final half-mile dirt road made us seriously reconsider our life choices. They do offer electric and water hookups, but if you’re looking for sewer hookups, you're out of luck.

Despite the rustic vibe, it was blissfully quiet, and we snagged a spot without any neighbors—an unexpected perk. There’s also a little pond with a fountain, and you can rent kayaks or canoes. But fair warning, the water’s so shallow, you might feel like you’re paddling in a kiddie pool.

Missing in action: two RV step mats! Last seen hitching a ride on the back of the Jeep. They must have decided they needed a vacation too and took a leap while drying off from last night's downpour. Keep an eye out; they might be plotting their next adventure!

  • Overnight stay in Verona, NY

    19. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 91 °F

An overnight stop at The Villages at Turning Stone in Verona, NY turned out to be a gem! With ample shade provided by the tree cover, a serene ambiance, and a free shuttle to the casino (where everyone else apparently hangs out, hence the quiet), it’s definitely a place we'd revisit.

The shuttle service was a lifesaver, sparing us from unhooking the Jeep for our casino adventure and dinner escapade. Our driver doubled as a tour guide, sharing that the casino has hosted the World Series of Poker and attracts over 5 million visitors a year! 😳

As you pull up to Turning Stone Casino, you’re greeted by statues of turtles, bears, and wolves—symbolizing the three tribes that teamed up to create the casino about 30 years ago. (Missed a photo op, though. 😢)

We got a “free” pull and won $10, which we promptly spent on the gaming machines. Don hit the jackpot with $5.40 on his first spin, and Beth walked away with a whopping $0.55 on hers! Trying to figure out the machines was a comedy show in itself. 🤣😂🤣 High rollers, watch out! 😂 We had a blast trying to figure out the gaming machines, laughing all the way.

The casino boasts about 10 different restaurants, though some were closed. We settled on the Italian place, which served up good, hearty portions (hello, leftovers!) — nothing to write home about, but it hit the spot!

All in all, it was a fun and memorable stop!

  • The Great Lakes Seaway Trail

    18. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

This afternoon, we embarked on an 18-mile round-trip bike ride from Kiwanis Park in Lewiston, NY to Fort Niagara in Youngstown, NY via the Great Lakes Seaway Trail.

The ride began on a trail adjacent to the Niagara Scenic Parkway, weaving through some tree-covered areas with just a few stretches in the direct sun—not too shabby! After a heavy morning rain, the trail was dotted with puddles. Don, ever the dedicated draft rider, followed Beth a bit too closely and got a refreshing splash of puddle water. What a splashy surprise! 😝

The trail then veered onto NY State Route 18F, hugging the Niagara River all the way into Youngstown. This scenic route offered lovely views of the river and showcased some charming riverside homes, making the ride even more enjoyable. It culminated at Fort Niagara Park, where we turned around and headed back.

While riding in the park, we didn't get to delve into the rich history of Old Fort Niagara because the Visitor Center was closed by the time we arrived. But we did manage a distant admiration and got up close and personal with one of the earliest lighthouses on the Great Lakes—a definite highlight of our ride. Other sights in Fort Niagara included a beach, an old cemetery, several soccer fields, and a collection of historic buildings.

  • Journey Behind the Falls … Canada

    17. juni 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

We are over the moon and ready for our epic Canadian Niagara adventure—Journey Behind the Falls! We've heard it's one of the best tours around, and the lines to get in weren’t too bad. Or so we thought...

Wait a minute… we spoke too soon! The moment we stepped off the elevator into the tunnels, it was like being dropped into a mosh pit at a rock concert. Chaos everywhere! But despite the line to get back on the elevator at the end of our self-guided tour, the tour itself was totally worth it! Seeing the fury of the waterfall up close was incredible—so cool it gave us goosebumps!

By the time we got back up topside, it looked like someone had opened the gates to get into Canada! The crowds …. OMG! We’d had our fill of crowds for the day and decided to trek back to the states!!

  • Rainbow Bridge to Canada & downtown

    17. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Instead of driving to Canada today, we decided to put on our walking shoes and trek across the Rainbow Bridge. The weather was perfect, the views were stunning, and there were no crowds—until we tried to get into Canada. Luckily, the line wasn't very long, and we were in within 15 minutes!

Our reservation for Journey Behind the Falls wasn’t until later, so we had some time to kill. First stop? Lunch. And where do you think we went? Ruby Tuesdays, of course! Because nothing screams "Canadian adventure" like American chain dining. Unfortunately, we both deleted our Ruby deals from our emails, assuming we'd left that delight behind. And the real kicker? No smashburger on the menu!

Time for some exploration! This place looks like a miniature version of Pigeon Forge in Tennessee! There wasn't any rain in the forecast, but surprise, the weather forecasters here are just as reliable as they are back home! To dodge the surprise shower, we jumped on a ride called “Carnaval Chaos!” Shooting clowns never felt so therapeutic—Don giggled like a schoolboy the entire time!

And who could forget the “Whacky Balloon Man”? While setting up for a photo op, Don started mimicking the balloon man’s wild dance moves when a lady came over asking if he was okay! Just kidding—she actually thought Don was a local and asked for directions! 😂🤣😂

  • Maid of the Mist … USA

    17. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Oh, Niagara Falls, how could we resist your misty charms? Yes, we returned to do the ultimate American touristy thing: hop aboard the Maid of the Mist and get up close and personal with those thundering waterfalls. And boy, did we ever!

First off, let’s talk about our brilliant strategy. We thought we’d outsmart the crowd by coming on a Monday instead of the weekend. Ha! Joke’s on us! It felt like every school, family, and possibly even the cast of a “Niagara Falls: The Musical” was there. Seriously, the only thing missing was a marching band and a parade float.

Despite our smug pre-purchase of tickets, we ended up in a line that looked like it stretched to Canada. We spent 45 minutes shuffling forward, contemplating our life choices. The first 25 minutes were just to get our tickets scanned. You’d think we were trying to gain entry to an exclusive club, but no, just scanning tickets. The last 20 minutes were a scenic tour of the Observation Deck, a thrilling elevator ride to the ground floor, and a brisk walk to the boat.

All in all, it was a hilariously chaotic adventure. But hey, nothing like getting drenched by a waterfall to wash away the memory of an epic line, right?

  • Last stop: Anthony Manor Farm

    16. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Our final stop of the day was at the vibrant Anthony Manor Farm! Our host was bursting with energy and enthusiasm, keeping us entertained throughout our visit. Don skipped the wines and went straight for the spirits, with a standout favorite being the Woodcock IPA Whiskey. Unfortunately, they had just sold the last bottle before we arrived—talk about timing!

Beth, however, indulged in a tasting adventure, trying two wines (I Am Frank and I Am a MF) and a delightful Berry/Cherry cordial (Berries & Cherries). She loved all three, and we decided to purchase a bottle of I Am Frank as a nod to our dear friend, Frank. 🥰

To top it all off, the countryside was stunning! Nearly every place we passed was immaculately maintained and breathtakingly beautiful. What a perfect way to spend our afternoon and end our day!

  • 3rd winery: A Gust of Sun Winery

    16. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

At this stop, we found a pond teeming with Koi fish (you can even feed them!), got different crackers depending on the tasting, and discovered it's a Harvest Host (although they're taking a break this year, sadly).

Don tried all the reds but couldn't pick a favorite. However, both Don and Beth were fans of the Fedora Red. Beth also tasted the whites, but nothing really caught her fancy for a purchase. But let me tell you, the crackers (or should I say cookies?)—they were the real stars of the show for both of us

  • Farher’s Day: Freedom Run Winery

    16. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

This morning we decided to be productive (aka procrastinate) and catch up on things before embarking on a noble quest: wine tasting! It's our go-to alternative to bourbon—Don's holy grail!

First stop: Freedom Run Winery! We sipped our way through some delightful wines, and Beth even stumbled upon a dessert wine aged in bourbon barrels. Don sampled it, found it intriguing, but alas, a tad too sweet for his manly taste buds!

Final verdict: No wine captured our hearts enough to warrant a bottle purchase. But fear not! We discovered a vendor with divine meats and cheeses, straight outta Amish country! Moral of the story: sometimes the cheese steals the show!

  • Fork you … Because it’s Forking good

    15. juni 2024, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

Starving and wandering in Canada, we stumbled upon a gem of a place serving Peruvian cuisine. Neither of us had tried Peruvian food before, so we were ready for a culinary adventure.

For drinks, we ventured into uncharted territory. Beth ordered a Chilcano Maracuya Pisco, which was sweet and delightful, while Don went for a Latina Beer—light enough that even Beth would enjoy it! That's saying something.

Our appetizer was beef empanadas, a familiar dish with a twist: they were sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with lime. Who knew sweet and tangy could make empanadas even better?

The main courses were Aji de Gallina and Lomo Saltado. Yes, they were heavy on the carbs, but oh-so-delicious! The Aji de Gallina stole the show with its tantalizing, flavor-packed shredded chicken in creamy yellow pepper sauce. It deserves an award!

For dessert, we had a vanilla ice cream affogato, featuring a shot of espresso made from Colombian coffee beans. Fabulous! Our waiter, a sweet gentleman from Colombia, made it even better with his charm.

We hit the jackpot with this restaurant! The owner/chef visited our table several times, sharing his success story and giving us a taste of Alba (a Baileys-like liquor) and Sapaq (Pisco) on the house. He even spilled the secrets of his "Fork You Pisco Sours." Definitely a highlight of our day!

And lastly, about that pay phone—Don's too cheap to pay for roaming, so Beth had to use it. We still have no clue why it was there, but it saved the day!

  • Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory

    15. juni 2024, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Our first stop in Canada is the Butterfly Conservatory, because seriously, who doesn’t love these fluttery little fellas?

We kicked things off with a short video presentation. Think of it as Butterfly 101. We learned that there are over 2,000 butterflies here, making it one of the largest conservatories in North America. And get this—they ship these butterflies from all over the world! Can you imagine butterflies with little suitcases?

Beth was in heaven, practically communing with the butterflies like she’s the queen of the flutter. Even Don got in on the action, snapping pics of these winged wonders as they danced around.

  • Niagara Falls State Park … USA

    15. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Wow … Beth is a huge fan of waterfalls and Niagara Falls are absolutely spectacular! It was amazing that we could see the mist rising from the falls from miles away. Words cannot express how beautiful these falls are!

Uncaptured comedy (depending on your perspective) happened while we were at Niagara Falls. As we exited the food court, a seagull dive-bombed Beth’s head in an attempt to snag our lunch, and she let out a startled yelp! Don, who was walking right behind her, caught this hilarious moment out of the corner of his eye. If only he had been quicker with his camera—Beth’s impromptu battle with a hungry seagull would have gone viral for sure! 😱
