  • Old Saybrook to New London

    June 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

A very nice afternoon. We tried to bowl again, but the location, though listed as "open now" on Yelp, was decidedly and seemingly forever closed. We spent some time in a used book store, walked across the big sandbar that leads out of Niantic, though it mostly feels like a regular road. Saw a drawbridge with train tracks, which looks a little scary when it's up. Also a street sign that made Nate laugh, a flower tower, and the trip's coolest roadkill. Went to a crunchy, organic market to pick up a dinner picnic, which we ate in the hotel. We bought a big bag of sugar snap peas, so I'm feeling less vegetable-deprived.Read more

  • New London CT to Westerly RI

    June 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

We've made it to Rhode Island. Extra long walk today, because the weather was gorgeous. We did get rained on a fair bit early in the morning, but the rest of the day was cloudy and cool, and perfect for walking. We took a second stab at bowling this morning, though we weren't very impressive. Nate enjoyed the video game after the bowling more than the bowling itself. He did win a ridiculous pink rubber monkey whose eyes bulge out when you squeeze it.

We walked through Mystic Connecticut, which is adorable. Coolest part was the drawbridge. Found a great lunch spot with an old time (ok, not actually old time, more time 80's) pinball machine that we both had fun playing. Ended the day with Cold Stone Creamery ice cream and a great sky. Stayed at the Aquastar Motel.

Funny little collection of shops, greenhouses, gardens, along with emus goats and chickens. The emus were happy to be patted, though one made a good try at stealing Nate's glasses. The photo is nate recoiling after the emu made contact with the glasses.Read more

  • Westerly to Charlestown

    June 28, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Walked 20 yesterday, so today would be just a 10 miler and we would have time to go paddle boarding this afternoon. Website said they were open till 6:00, but when we called at 2:45, they said they were closing early. 🙁. Still, we had a really nice day The motel (Phil and Ann's Sunset Motel)l is bare bones in the rooms, but outside there's a big field, with all sorts of games. We played shuffle board and swam, got take out from a nearby restaurant, and we're watching baseball. Laundromat said aren't as plentiful around here as I thought they would be... resorted to doing some wash in the sink today. Tomorrow's hotel has laundry facilities (yay, Holiday Inn!) so we'll buy some laundry soap and wash everything properly,Read more

  • Charlestown to South Kingston

    June 29, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Busier than usual day... lots of fun, and we still made it to the hotel at a reasonable hour. Route 1 was more highway-ish than we would have liked today, though there was generally a decent grassy shoulder. Said good bye to our views of the Long Island Sound. The coastal road has been beautiful. The bouncy bungee thing at Adventure Land was second to the one at the EnKa Fair, but still fun. Miscellaneous photos below are 1) close up of a tree that, along with its neighbors, was covered with zillions of caterpillars. 2) There are many stone walls here made with no mortar... not sure why they don't all fall down.Read more

  • Day 9

    June 30, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Another great start. 5 miles into a 17.5 day. Stopping for a snack at Dave's Market: organic blueberries, a big Honeycrisp apple, and diet cream soda. Hmmm... one of these things is not like the others. All delicious. Nate is catching up on his video game, and I'm planning our next stop. The woman who owned the kayak rental place from yesterday was fascinated by our walk and has been texting me ideas for things to do (mostly places to eat) on our walk today.Read more

  • South Kingstown to Warwick

    June 30, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

Today started and ended with rain, but hot and sunny in between. Good for that dunking Nate gave me. Two photos of wild flowers. We've seen gobs of gorgeous wildflowers, but I haven't thought to photograph many. Our good deed of the day was to pick up a license plate from the side of the road and drop it off at a police station. And our yummy treat was cupcakes from the most adorable little cupcake store I've ever seen. Still enjoying podcasts during the less interesting sections, and still just having fun hanging out and walking!Read more

  • RWP Zoo

    July 1, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Patting armadillos is cool. This is a great little (maybe medium) zoo. The animals are close, but not in sad little enclosures. The bear (a moon bear... he has a big white crescent on his chest) looked bored, but maybe he was just hot.Read more
