We may have had only a few hours of sleep on our red eye flight to London, but that didn't stop us from visiting Stonehenge on our way to Cornwall!
We learned what little they know about this famous place in our quick hour tour. But we did discover that this is one of 400 historic monuments, buildings and places listed on the English Heritage conservation program that spans over six millennia. A coastline walk

Today our friends, Judy and Snowy took us on their favorite coastline trail. It was a perfect day for a 3 .5 mile walk to the small fishing village of Polperro. Once there, we stopped for a pint and lunch on a roof top pub. Our return took through rolling fields, endless vistas and local farms.Lue lisää

Coastal Town of Fowey

Thanks to Judith and Snowy's friend, Nick, we were able to view the small village of Fowey from the River Fowey. According to Nick (which may or may not be his real name), Fowey is home to may famous Cornwall actors and actress. Since I didn't recognize any of their names, this may or may not be a real story. What I did believe is that Nick was taking us on a lovely boat ride to a quaint little Cornish town with 200 year old buildings. Where we may or may not have had a pint at lunch.Lue lisää

The Eden Project

We spent the rainy day exploring the Eden Project, a former clay mine transformed into beautiful global gardens. These massive biomes are filled with the world’s largest indoor rainforests and fragrant Mediterranean scenery. It was breathtaking for all our sense!Lue lisää

A walk through the Bodmin Moor

Today our underpaid travel guides took us on a beautiful walk through the Cornish mining district of Caradon. The rise of copper mining in the 1840s lasted barely 50 years; large-scale mining for copper had essentially ceased by 1890. Today we saw lots grazing sheep, wild horses with day old ponies and learned more about the areas mining history than I'll ever remember. Unfortunately, since they have yet to find Poldark, our guides remain underpaid.Lue lisää

St. Michael's Mount

With history and legends of mermaids and apparitions of St. Michael, dating back to 495AD this castle and the surrounding gardens were a must see! During low tide you can walk across the causeway to the island, but today's visit was during high tide so luckily there are ferry boats available to shuttle us back and forth. After walking through this amazing castle, we toured gardens that were planted in 1887.Lue lisää

Tintagel Castle

Today our historic journey across Cornwall took us to Tintagel Castle. We crossed a 70m spanning footbridge to tour the ruins that dated back since the late Roman period. Tintagel gained literary fame when Geoffrey of Monmouth named it as the place where King Arthur was conceived. These Arthurian associations may have inspired the fabulously rich Richard, Earl of Cornwall, to build a castle at Tintagel in the 1230s. The rich history along with the sheer cliffs dropping into the ocean delivered a stunning visit!Lue lisää

Acanthite

We spent our last day in Cornwall on Judith and Snowy's beautiful estate of Acanthtite. After only 15 years, they have turned an empty field and mine ruins into a beautiful home with stunning gardens. Over the past week, they have showed us the hidden side of Cornwall. Clarkson Farm and Bath

We said our farewells to Judith and Snowy (and Cornwall) with cornish pasties for the road and headed to Bath....via a quick stop to Clarkson Farm. If you know anything about the history of the Clarkson Farm Store, you would agree that it is a must see. What they don't show you on the Clarkson Farm series is that the daily line to get into the Farm Store is at least 90 minutes! But, thankfully the line for their famous food truck was only 45 minutes. Yep - we did it and we can agree that it was worth the wait! So it was a short and worthy detour on our way to Bath. Once we arrived in Bath we were quite awestruck. This famous Roman spa town dates as far back as 800 BC! We arrived too late to visit the Roman Bath museum, but we still enjoyed a stroll around the Bath Abbey (675 AD) and the weir on the River Avon. Did you know Jane Austen lived in Bath?Lue lisää

We made it to the Capital City! Soon after checking into our hotel at Charing Cross, we changed our shoes and started walking. We walked along the Thames to Tower Bridge, we walked back to Charing Cross, we took a break and rubbed our feet, then we walked to Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Palace of Westminster before kicking off our shoes and calling it a night. Tomorrow, I think we'll ride the "Hop on Hop off" bus just to save our soles!Lue lisää
