    San Marcos La Laguna

    Lake Atitlan is surrounded not only by volcanoes but also by little towns that are all known for different kind of craftsmanship. Today we took the boat to get to San Marcos. We read in a blog it should be a hippie paradise with places for meditation, yoga, henna tattoos etc - and the blog did not lie 😃

    San Pedro La Laguna

    San Marco is the hippie town, San Juan is for the artists and for people looking for a quiet place.

    San Pedro is the town for the young people. With a lot of clubs, bars, restaurants it's famous for his nightlife at Lake Atitlan.

    While we have seen a dozens of laundries around the city, the native still wash their laundry, but als themselves in the Lake. Rubbing their clothes with brushes on beton plates.    Read more

    Good bye Guatemala

    When you travel you always try to get some information about the area you're going to. Online we red about a few nice towns to see traditional carnival processions. But every local we asked told us 'We don't celebrate that here!'. So we spend the time we calculated for that at the 'gate to the western highlands of Guatemala'. A town we have been before and which is a hotspot for many tourist. We used the time to get laundry done, sleep as much as we could and visit some small villages around Antigua with a 'chicken bus'. Also a tour to a local winery included, which makes wine out of kumquats. (That word is hard to spell 😂)Read more

    ¡Hola Nicaragua!

    Today we had to wake up really early, to do some country hopping with planes. At 3am we woke up to take our first flight from Guatemala City to San Salvador, from San Salvador we took the flight to Managua the capital of Nicaragua. And here the real adventure started 😉

    Last time Jan boarded a Cessna that size it was a 15min flight to do jump out with a parachute. Today we boarded the plane to go to the remote 'Corn islands'. Flying just above the clouds gave us an awesome few of the country side of Nicaragua.    Read more

    We have been on many places during this trip. Many places that tried to show authenticy, while still adapting to the (masses of) coming tourists. Here on Isla de Maíz it feels really authentic. As many people think Nicaragua isn't save to travel, there not many other tourist around. Tomorrow we will down size the island and move from 'Big Corn' to the 'little Corn'.Read more

    After 30mins of bumpy boat ride we arrived in 'Isla pequeña del Maíz'. No roads, no motorized vehicle except the boats around the city. Half of the day no electricity. But the whole day fantastic views.Read more

    On small islands like this the visit of the freighters are like a 'village party' the whole island is coming. 60" Flat Screens, new equipment for the dive shops, chips and snacks and on Big Corn even new taxis .....

    Yesterday we sadly had to say goodbye to the Corn Island. A place we could have spend many more days. Given it's small size, Little Corn really fast feels like home. As there are only 5-6 restaurants/cafes/Lounges/social meeting points you always meet the same people and it starts feeling like every knows each other.
    Big Corn in comparison has a real 'night life', many more options to eat and drink and offers very different kind of beaches and landscapes.    Read more

    One of the first colonial cities of central America and the oldest one in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is called the 'land of lakes and volcanos', Granada is the perfect example for that. Sitting on the north end of the lake cocibolca, central Americas' biggest lake, Granada gives you a view at the surrounding volcanos. Masaya, Mombacho, Conception, Maderas just to name a few.

    You always dreamed of sitting in a tropical garden, surrounded by Spanish colonial architecture, eating Churros with delicious chocolate dip and watching hummingbirds? Garden Cafe in Granada is your place to be. 😉    Read more

    Vulcano Masaya & Santiago

    Finally we saw a volcano with lava 🌋 it is one of the lowest volcanoes in Nicaragua and this is why you can easily go there by shuttle to see the red lava after sunset. Of course we did not miss this opportunity, after we saw volcanoes with sulfur fires and were listening to the rumours of mount Bromo in Java last year.
    Shorty after sunset hundreds of 'Chocoyos', green pacific parakeets surround the crater as they fly back to their nests inside the crater.    Read more

    ¡Hola Costa Rica!

    There's a saying 'another day, another opportunity'. For us it sometimes feels like 'another week, another country'. Yesterday we arrived in Costa Rica and found our way to the 'amazon of Costa Rica'.

    We arrived at the edge of Tortugero National Park, an area in a remote location only reachable by boat. The water at the Caribbean coast around here is really rough and because of the big population of bull sharks and the heavy current you're told not to swim.    Read more

    Monteverde

    In Costa Rica it is mandatory to go into cloud forests or go to a Zipline. We combined the cloud forest in Monteverde with the Zipline and a quick stop to the sloth rescue station.
    This was the first stop we did together with our new traveling group. Two days ago we met up with an old friend of us and two others to explore Costa Rica together.Read more

    Montezuma peninsula

    Today we arrived at the Montezuma peninsula. Our stay there is at a wildlife rescue center, where they care for monkey babies, ocelots or injured birds. Here we saw our first red macaws, after seeing green ones in Tortuguero.Read more

    Morning fun

    This morning was full of 'adventures'. After the breakfast a guy from our 'hotel' showed us around and explained us the work around our hotel. Together with a second rescue center they try to reintroduce macaws on the peninsula which where extinct here because of excessive hunting to keep them as pets.

    All the income of the hotel goes directly into the work of the rescue center.

    After the tour we decided to go to the beach and asked one of the locals about tips where to go. He wanted to warn is on advance about the road conditions after the heavy rain fall in the night. Well 5mins later it looked like that (see pictures).

    Funny part of the story: the group traveling with us are 3 application engineers from Bosch who are working in the development of car systems and our driver is actually also test driver for these car systems. 😉    Read more

    Pacific ocean beach time

    We started at Guadeloupe and Dominican republic with most of the beaches there being at the side of the Atlantic ocean. Since Bayahibe we traveled along the Caribbean Sea with a little dip into the gulf of Mexico at Holbox. Finally we arrived at the Pacific ocean. And even the weather wanted us all to have fun as we had our first sunny day in Costa Rica.Read more

    Exploring the nature of Costa Rica

    The last two days were about exploring the nature of Montezuma and volcano near La Fortuna. 'Tabacon hot springs' was a place Jan really wanted to go, but decided to skip because 100$ entrance is to much. Luckily we passed it on our way to La Fortuna and realized there are actually areas for public which are free.Read more

    'Oh wie schön ist Panama'

    Yesterday we had to say goodbye to our travel companions and started the journey to our last country on this trip Panama.
    Our first stop is again an island and archipelago: 'Bocas del Toro'.
