London -settling in

Not sure why a 3 hour plane ride should take all day but it seems to in this part of the world. The hotel in Reykjavik organised a bus transfer to the airport which arrived promptly at 11.30am. As I boarded the bus I was greeted by a lovely lady from the Golden Circle tour we did on Saturday. The ride to the airport took 45 minutes and we had a great chat. Checking in at the airport was straight forward and again I had assistance first of all to the Business Class Lounge and then to the gate. I was so glad about this as not only was the gate the very last one but it was also a bus transfer to the furthest possible spot to our plane. When we arrived at Heathrow airport at 8.30pm it was a 24 minute walk to passport control. Luckily I (and many other people):were put in people movers and driven to passport control and with minimal delay, we were in the UK and headed to collect our luggage. That’s when mild chaos set in. I needed to go down 1 level to find the cab ranks. There were too few lifts to cope with the sheer volume of people with luggage trying to leave and enter the terminal. It took me 20-25 minutes to reach the cabs. Getting a cab was easy but I’m sure he took the longest way to the hotel as, with the now mandatory tip, it cost me just over £100. However, my accommodation is excellent and relatively central. Pity about the rolling tube and bus strikes over the next 7 days.
I slept in on Monday and then tackled my laundry. As I am staying at the Wilde Aparthotel for 2 weeks I am entitled to a free load of laundry each week. Great because I had a significant amount of laundry to do. So the next 3 hours saw me watching first the washing machine and then the dryer. So nice to have clean clothes and not just rinsed through and hung up in a bathroom. I then went down the street to a local M &S food hall to get some supplies (my room has a great little kitchenette) which were sampled before heading out again for dinner. The hotel next door has a great restaurant which specialises in beef/steak. Great with red wine and a short walk back to my hotel.
Today after a latish breakfast and a surprise call from Sonya, I decided to walk to a local Vodafone store to organise an e-sim for my phone. I was so happy I did this as I have had need of my phone all afternoon. I wanted to visit the National Portrait Gallery and the best stop was literally around the corner from the Vodafone store. So I used the phone like a map, found the correct bus stop and went into Trafalgar Square. The city was very chaotic due to no tube lines except the Elizabeth line, working until Friday. I spent about 2.5 hours at the gallery because I had been advised to be on a bus before 4.30pm due to the strike. I started with the Tudors on the third floor and worked my way down and through time. I also had a late lunch in the Portraits restaurant on the 4th floor with great views. Quite liked the older paintings but when I got to the section 2000 onwards I was not overly impressed.
I was on the bus home by 4.30pm and it was crowded and slow. It took about 30 minutes to get into the city and nearly an hour to get back. The bus was also being diverted from its normal route so I had to get off early. This is where having a local phone was very important. I found my way back to the hotel quite easily which is probably a miracle given my sense of direction. Tea in my room and some TV looks good.もっと詳しく

London week 1

This has been a very varied week. After the good weather to start the week, rain arrived Wednesday and stayed until Saturday. On Wednesday I ventured out for a walk around midday. I wanted to find all the eateries showing up on my google maps. I discovered some of them were food trucks located further down the canal in a square by a bridge over the water and the M & S food store. Going the other way back towards the hotel I came across some more interesting options. By now the rain was back so I decided to try the Pizza Express eatery. Great pizza accompanied by a primitivo from Puglia. The rain was quite persistent so in a gap I headed back to the hotel.
Thursday was meant to get fine so decided I needed to find the best way through to Paddington Station. I followed the suggested route on my phone and found myself in a mini maze which came out at the back of the station. Given the transport strike involving the tube and some rail lines, the station was very quiet. However, I did find the ticket office, the Paddington Bear statue and the way out at the front of the station onto Praed Road. By now I was thirsty, hot and the rain was back. Luckily, across the road, under scaffolding, was the Fountain Abbey pub. Very nice interior, good steak and ale pie and beers. It bucketed down so had to have a second beer while I waited for the rain to stop. A visit to the Tesco Express store on the way back was necessary to replenish my little kitchen. It rained most of Friday and I was tired so a day relaxing was in order. I went out mid afternoon to a local pub called the Lock House for a late lunch/early dinner.
By now, I was convinced that there was an easier way to the train station so set out Saturday to check it out. I cut through to the road nearby and just walked along until I came to the main entrance. Much quicker and easier. On Sunday I am meeting a young lady who is in England doing a teaching exchange. We are having lunch in Reading which is a quick train ride from Paddington. We have been working together on the Economics teachers society for a number of years. So once I bought my tickets for Sunday, I decided to go into the Tate Modern Art Gallery and that I would go by taxi. Great idea except for the massive demonstration in the city which I didn’t know about and my driver wasn’t sure where it would be. Well it turned out that it (or part of it) started at Blackfriars Bridge which we needed to cross to get to the gallery. It was blocked off by police. Having come so far, I got out and went to walk the rest of the way. It rained again, heavily. Judging by the mountains of litter in the area, what ever the cause may have been, it was definitely fuelled by alcohol.
I ended up walking over the bridge, and around the corner by several blocks to get to the gallery. My idea had been to arrive fresh, view the exhibition I had come to see - Emily Kam Kngwarray - check out other parts of the gallery, maybe even go to the restaurant. I was so knackered by the time I got inside that all I had the energy for was to go to Emily Kan Kngwarray. I did enjoy her exhibition but was disappointed that I was so tired to really view all of her works. A taxi ride back to the station, dinner at the pizza place and back to the hotel.もっと詳しく

旅行者Such a shame about the weather, but that’s London for you. I bet it’s still fabulous!

旅行者Sincerely hope the weather improves for the remainder of your trip. It’s all coming together rather quickly now. The rain has come to me as well, and I’m pretty glad I brought a rain jacket!

旅行者Sounds like fun despite the weather. Exploring any big city is fun but tiring. Sometimes you just have to get out there

Lunching in London

Sunday morning I headed to Reading- a town west of London - for lunch with Lauren Fleming. There are multiple trains running from Paddington Station but the trick was to catch the one that took 32 minutes not 55 minutes. After careful checking I lined up on platform 8 and waited and wondered why I was alone. Fortunately a station announcement came through stating that this particular train was now leaving from platform 2. I made it in plenty of time and was able to find a seat easily. The trip was quick and uneventful. The station at Reading was much bigger than I expected but by chance, good luck or whatever, Lauren and I met at the same exit (apparently there are three). Lunch was at The Three Guineas pub which was literally right next door to the station. We had a great catch up over roast beef lunch. Lauren is doing 12 months teaching in a private IB school just south of Reading. She’s had a bit of luck in terms of securing the position and housing but she’s such a lovely person that I think she deserves it. We parted company mid afternoon as Lauren wanted to get some work done (Sunday afternoon was always a busy time for me when I was working so expected this). Typically it had started to rain so being so close to the station was a bonus. The train I wanted to catch back was delayed and I became concerned about the large number of people waiting on the platform. When the train finally arrived everyone rushed to get on and the train soon became full. However, another train was due just 2 minutes later so I waited and boarded it. It was not crowded at all and again I found a seat easily. It was raining steadily when I arrived back at Paddington Station so had a very damp walk back to the hotel. No pictures unfortunately.
Monday morning I was delighted to have calls from Sonya and David (happy birthday David) who were at Heather’s house and from Anne. It was so lovely to hear from everyone. After a slow morning getting organised I set out to catch the 27 bus over to Kensington High Street. The bus stop was only 10 minute walk and the bus took me back through many of the areas I had frequented in 2023. Once over at Kensington I had a short walk to a restaurant we went to in 2023 - a Michelin star restaurant called Kitchen W8 which has a daily 3 course set menu for £49.50. I started with a Billecart salmon champagne, chose to do the set course menu with 2 glasses of wine, had another glass of red wine and finished with a flat white coffee. The glasses of wine were a white from Spain and a red. I took photos of the two reds I had but forgot when they poured the white. I’m not a fish person so had the warm potato salad, roast pork fillet and apple tart for dessert. The food and service were impeccable although the serves were very small. The flat white coffee was the best one I’ve had since leaving Australia.
Typically it was raining when I left to catch the bus back to Paddington. A stop at the Lock House pub for beer and some chips finished off a great afternoon.もっと詳しく

London - last days

My last few days in London have been relatively quiet. Wet weather has played a part and so has a general tiredness. On Thursday afternoon I met up with Annie, a friend from the cruise. She caught the train into London but had to deal with a misadventure on the line and was delayed by nearly an hour. We went to the local upmarket pub nearby called the Lock House for lunch. It was great to catch up with Annie as we had certainly enjoyed our time together on the cruise. It was a good afternoon. She left to join a friend at the American Bar at the Savoy which is an experience going onto my to do list for the next time I am in London.
Friday turned out to be a lovely sunny day so decided to do one more trip into the city and go to the Victoria and Albert museum. I had to catch 2 buses and didn’t start well by getting onto the 16 bus instead of bus 6. Fortunately this mistake was easily corrected and I eventually found myself in front of the V&A. I wanted to see 2 exhibitions but one (Cartier) was sold out and the second, Marie Antoinette opened Saturday. Bad timing! Anyway I viewed two areas I had not seen in 2023 - the Medieval period and the Cast Galleries. Both were quite impressive and worth the visit. A quick stop in the rather extensive shop finished my visit. I was sitting in the entrance area and had a group of school girls gather in front of me to speak to their teacher. It occurred to me that these students were so very lucky to have such a wonderful museum to visit on an excursion.
It was quite hot by the time I decided to come back to Paddington and I was in need of lunch (it was 4 pm). Hot, thirsty and hungry- what does one do? Go to the third pub in the Paddington Basin area called the Brewdog for beer and a burger. I sat outside and it was extremely pleasant so stayed for a second beer.
I repacked suitcases Saturday morning and went for one last walk around the Basin. Late lunch again at the Lock House before returning to the hotel.
I am now packed and ready for my homeward journey. I leave at 22.05pm tonight (Sunday) flying to Adelaide via Singapore. I am looking forward to being home, in my own house and back to normal life. See you all soon.もっと詳しく

旅行者Great photos of the V&A. Haven’t been there for years. However, why do I suspect you had a bit of a shop???? Glad that the weather cleared up. Have a good flight home.
旅行者You have hit the ground running. It sounds like you have been fortunate with your accommodation in London, and that things are close to you. Enjoy your time.
