• Art Deco Walking Tour - South Beach

    30. lokakuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

The Miami Beach Architectural District (sometimes called the Art Deco District) contains the largest concentration of 1920s and 1930s resort architecture in the United States. The buildings constructed in the 1920s were designed almost exclusively in the Mediterranean Revival style, while those built in the 1930s are in the Art Deco, International, or Moderne styles. The area is well known as the district where Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace resided, and was murdered, in a mansion on Ocean Drive.

We took a 2 hour tour offered by the Art Deco welcome center. Learned a lot about the history of Miami Beach from its beginnings to now as well as how the Art Deco District came to be placed on the National Register Listing. Learned a lot especially about the characteristics that define each style including Art Decos Rule of Three. Plus our somewhat older lady tour guide gave us a great new term - she pointed out a spot where people often take "faceys" ("selfies" are SO yesterday).

  • Farinelli 1937 - Coconut Grove

    29. lokakuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Farinelli 1937 is an authentic Italian pizzeria that compliments the old world flavors and traditions of Strada in the Grove and increases the temperature to 800°F in our two custom-made copper-coated wood-burning ovens. They start by preparing our high quality dough with our very own recipe and travel all over Italy for their ingredients. The result is a combination of both classic Italian and regional pizzas with our own special touch.

Just love visiting places off season and during the week when it’s not crowded. We were able to have our pick of tables on their patio. Our Venezuelan waiter was also the manager and delightful to talk to.

There was an extensive wine list with wines being grouped together according to their characteristics. Succulent whites, sexy rose, gold and rich reds. I decided to go with a Pinot Grigio which was amazing, but my waiter asked if I had ever had the “amarone zeni in veneto.” When I said I hadn’t, he replied, “Tonight you try the amarone!” And. Fought me a sample post haste. It was very good and had the weather been cooler I’d have loved a glass of that.

Brian and I each ordered a salad and then shared a pizza (see below for descriptions). Simple, beautifully prepared Italian food. Heaven.

    Insalata di Mare
Shrimp, calamari, baby scallops, chickpeas, red onions, EVOO, lemon

    Spinaci
Baby spinach, gaeta olives, pine nuts, raisins, shaved parmigiano, lemon mustard dressing

    Prosciutto e Fich
24 month aged parma prosciutto, caramelized onions, parmigiano, gorgonzola, candied walnuts, figs, thyme

  • Sugar Rooftop Bar - Brickell/Downtown

    29. lokakuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We were told that this was the best spot to enjoy a sunset in Miami from above. Beautiful rooftop bar, but the views were not as good as we’d anticipated. You had to reserve seats on the perimeter of the balcony. Perhaps had we been seated there the views would’ve been better.

Brickell is the city's financial center, where glittering business towers and luxury condos tower over Biscayne Bay. Rooftop bars and surf 'n' turf grills cater to the banking and business crowd, while the art galleries and fashionable boutiques in the Brickell City Centre attract chic locals. The Brickell Avenue Bridge spans the Miami River and has views of the waterfront Miami Circle park and archaeological site.

Known for its many colorful murals, Wynwood is one of the city’s most happening districts. Wynwood Walls is an outdoor museum showcasing large-scale works by some of the world’s best-known street artists. The surrounding streets have converted warehouses housing craft breweries and funky art galleries. A hip young crowd frequents the neighborhood’s chic clothing boutiques, stylish bistros and late-night bars. Needless to say, we weren’t part of the hip young crowd.Lue lisää

After our air boat ride, it was time for lunch. So, we headed to the Wynood district for lunch. They describe themselves as serving Latin inspired global cuisine. We shared several small plates: guacamole with house made chips, Patacon Sliders which were mini beef burgers topped with fontina cheese and served between to crispy plantains instead of a bun (delish) and chicken empanadas. The empanadas, however, weren’t nearly as tasty as the ones we had in Little Havana. Brian enjoyed his tuna tartare.Lue lisää

  • Coopertown Air Boat Tour - Everglades

    29. lokakuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Had to check this one off our list. No trip to Miami would be complete without an air boat ride in the Everglades. Thankfully, I had earplugs cause it was really noisy. A few alligator sightings but no other wildlife, save the ones the ones they had in their “zoo” for lack of a better word. Got to hear and see one of the resident alligators doing his mating call. And at the tours end, got to hold a small alligator named Toby, which made the trip totally worthwhile for me. There are beautiful walks and even a tram ride that are highly recommended, but with the heat we decided to save that for next time.

Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve on the southern tip of the U.S. state of Florida. Often compared to a grassy, slow-moving river, the Everglades is made up of coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes and pine flatwoods that are home to hundreds of animal species. Among the Everglades' abundant wildlife are the endangered leatherback turtle, Florida panther and West Indian manatee.

  • Night Skyline Boat Tour, South Beach

    28. lokakuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We always love getting out on the water when traveling to different places. This was particularly nice because it was on a small boat which accommodated just 10 guests. We began at 6:30PM so that we were able to enjoy the Miami skyline as the sun set and the city lit up. We were told had there been more clouds there would’ve been more spectacular colors at sunset, but were not disappointed in the least.

While it was light we drove by Star Island, also known as Millionaire’s Island, and for good reason. The largest home on the island was owned by the man who was developed “the little blue pill” and sold it to Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. We also saw the house where the interior scene from Scarface,”Say hello to me little friend” was shot.

Our tour also took us down the Miami River which goes into Brickell/ the heart of cities financial district. Also enjoyed the Intercontinental “Light Dancer.” Every year nearly 3000 dancers compete for this. The winner is projected in the Intercontinental Hotel for the following year.

Miami has the country's third-tallest skyline with over 300 high-rises, 80 of which stand taller than 400 feet and it is truly spectacular. The buildings are unified by their metal and glass design, but are also very different in design and shape. We saw one in process on the Miami River that, when completed, will resemble a sailing ship. It is truly beautiful and at night, magnificent.

  • Azucar Ice Cream - Little Havana

    28. lokakuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Azucar Ice Cream Company creates artisanal gourmet ice creams and sorbets in Cuban and tropical flavors in the heart of Miami's Little Havana neighborhood Whenever possible, they use locally grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables from South Florida farmers markets and growers from the Redland in South Miami-Dade County resulting in what they call a “farm to cone” product.

We were treated to their super-popular Abuela Maria scoop which has ribbons of sweet guava paste, chunks of cream cheese and crumbled Maria cookies—a classic Cuban combination. So many flavors, would’ve loved to have tried their Cuban coffee and Oreo. How could that be bad. Guess it gives us an excuse to go back.

Stretching along SW 13th Ave just south of Calle Ocho (SW 8th St), Cuban Memorial Park contains a series of monuments to Cuban and Cuban American icons. The memorials include the Eternal Torch in Honor of the 2506th Brigade, for the exiles who died during the Bay of Pigs Invasion; a José Martí memorial; and a Madonna statue, supposedly illuminated by a shaft of holy light every afternoon. There's also a map of Cuba, with a quote by José Martí. At the center of the map is a massive ceiba tree, still revered by followers of Santeria (a syncretic religion that evolved in Cuba among African slaves in the 18th century).Lue lisää

Pastries, both savory and sweet, are a huge part of daily Cuban life. We stopped at Yisell Bakery and sampled their pastelito filled with guava paste and cream cheese (or the Cuban equivalent). The pastry itself was flaky and tender and the filling was smooth, light, not too sweet, and incredibly flavorful. Our guide said that Cubans do not feel the need to prepare everything themselves and will pop into a bakery to pick up these pastries for weddings, parties or family gatherings.Lue lisää

  • Havana Classic Cigar Company

“At Havana Classic Cigars we strive to manufacture the best quality cigars in the market. We use top quality Cuban seed tobacco from Santo Domingo, and Ecuadorian wrappers and binder, thus making this blend one of distinction. They are 100% Hand-Made by Cuban Master Rollers in the heart of Little Havana Miami, FL.”

The Cuban Master Rollers were working at the front of the store. Of the two working the day we visited, one had 20 years experience, the other 30 years. They get paid by the piece and roll 100 pieces per day. And to prove their product is good, they smoke ‘me as they roll ‘em. Brian picked up a small box for his upcoming boys weekend, I bought a Cuban fedora.

  • Ball and Chain - Little Havana

    28. lokakuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

As we passed by the first time there was a combo playing Latin Jazz. As we entered our tour guide pointed out a gentleman, who upon first glance, you might think worked there. Not so. Ball and Chain has a house band that plays daily fro 11AM-6PM and this gentleman siphons up to dance with all the ladies, tourist included. The band was on break so we proceeded to the back patio and garden area that was designed to be reminiscent of Cuba. Lush greenery, a stage where bands play and dancing occurs. We enjoyed a delicious mojito and found out that, although it is often thought to be a Cuban drink it is not. The truly Cuban drink is a daiquiri. Me thinks the Bacardi distillery may have in some way been responsible. In any event, it was delicious and a perfect cocktail for the hot and humid day.Lue lisää

  • Domino Park - Little Havana

    28. lokakuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Domino Park," Maximo Gomez Park is a Little Havana landmark, and meeting spot for older Cubans, at any time of day you will find residents sipping coffee, playing Dominoes and chatting with their friends. Named after Generalissimo Máximo Gómez commander in the Cuban War of Independence, this park was built in 1976 in an area that was predominantly Cuban and which has since seen an influx of Central American exiles. In pre-park days, local men set up makeshift tables for chess, but beginning in 1983, periodic improvements added a pavilion with fiberglass awning, a bathroom building, and information booth to the two original terracotta-roofed pavilions covering all-weather gaming tables and chairs.

We were told by our tour guide that you had to be a Cuban male over the age of 55 to be able to play dominoes in the park and that much of the conversations originally revolved around their hatred for Castro. She said that each of these men would have a story to tell about life under Castro. Our tour guides grandfather, before Castro, owned a distillery. When Castro came to power, they showed up at her grandfathers house forcing them to turn over the distillery at gun point. He was imprisoned at some point during Castro’s rule, but escaped to the United States.

A long-standing staple on famed Calle Ocho in Little Havana, El Pub opened in 1966 and was rebuilt in 1995. The menu features authentic Cuban cuisine with specials including ropa vieja, arroz con pollo, black beans and rice, picadillo criollo and flan. A cortadito makes a perfect after-dinner coffee. A colorful rooster sculpture greets you at the restaurant's entrance. We enjoyed both a beef empanada with a picadillo filling and the coffee. I must confess that, although not being a coffee drinker, I’m enjoying the Cuban coffee. Must be the sugar. :-) Brian says it’s a “gateway” coffee. Also, most of the restaurants have windows to the street where empanadas and coffee can be picked up which is typical in Cuba.Lue lisää

Adored by locals and out-of-towners, Lulu is a fresh take on the traditional. Offering uniquely inspired dishes from local sources, our Neighborfood ranges from shareable tapas to flavorful entrees.

While Miami sizzles during the day (we were told that it was much warmer than usual for this time of year) it cools down considerably in the evenings. That coupled with the constant gentle breeze and the light wrapped palm trees make it perfect for enjoying drinks and nibbles on the porch. Delicious food.and cocktails.
