Tri-Corner Trip

Traveling to three corners of Virginia, following in the footsteps of our founding fathers. Les mer

Sunny, beautiful, brisk day for our visit. Great tour guides for our tour of the house as well as for the “Slavery at Monticello” tour. Big change from my last visit. They were definitely not sugar coating the fact that Jefferson owned 600 slaves over the course of his life and only freed 6 upon his death.

In contrast George Washington freed all his slaves upon his death, and at some point during his lifetime as he became more enlightened, he refused to purchase any more.

En route to Charlottesville, we stopped in Fredericksburg for a distillery tour. Learned a few things we hadn’t learned while traveling the bourbon trail. This distillery stores their barrels on end, so that more surface is exposed to the charred barrel as evaporation occurs. Also, we learned that Kentucky and Virginia are great locations for distilleries because of the opposing high and low pressure systems that move through the area. The high pressure systems force the alcohol into the charred barrels and the low pressure systems pull it back out with all the tasty goodness they’ve gotten from the barrel. They do a variety of experimental liquors. When they’re gone, they’re gone. They distill bourbon as well as vodka, gin and rum. Hoping we can locate some at home since they were unable to ship and our luggage is too full to tuck in bottles.Les mer

After a quick trip to the Safeway 3 blocks from our apartment, we headed out for our Wilson Nicoll Memorial happy hour. Discounted drinks and bar bites that would bring a tear to a Scot’s eye.

Lunch before heading to Old Town Alexandria.

“This upscale steakhouse takes the cake, with white linen tablecloths and formal servers who stand at the ready to refill drinks and baskets of warm bread. The $10 menu is one of the best kept secrets in town – until now. The Kobe Meatloaf, 6 oz. Sirloin and Herb-Marinated Flank Steak Sandwich are only $9.99, and they include sides such as garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables. Chef Mike Winston (who also paid a visit to our table) said, “People will drop $10 for a fast food meal, where at Hondo’s you get fresh steaks cooked to order and soups made from scratch every day.” Diners leave satisfied, and wondering how Hondo’s makes a profit at all.”Les mer
