Australia/ New Zealand tour

Heilung & Eivør tour + Holiday with Michael Les mer
  • Holiday 2: Tongariro (Mordor)

    21. november 2024, New Zealand ⋅ 🌫 6 °C

Today, we visited the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a stunning region in New Zealand's North Island. I had marked it on my to-do list because it served as the filming location for Mordor and Gollum's pool in *The Lord of the Rings*.

We underestimated how cold it would be, facing temperatures of 2 degrees Celsius and snow. Michael, in particular, was caught off guard, having only packed summer clothes and light walking shoes. Thankfully, the visitor center had some warm jackets for sale, which helped us prepare for the conditions.

During our hike, we noticed a lot of activity from fire departments, ambulances, and medics heading up the trail. We later learned that an elderly hiker had fallen ill just ahead of us. Given how underprepared we were and the biting cold, we decided to turn back early. Instead, we planned to purchase proper shoes and gloves to ensure we’d be ready for future adventures in this beautiful but challenging environment.

  • Holiday 3: Rivendell / Wellington

    22. november 2024, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Waking up, I was eager to catch a glimpse of the stunning Mount Ruapehu, but the clouds had other plans, shrouding the mountain from view.

Undeterred, we quickly hit the road, making a small detour to shop for better shoes. However, our journey hit a little hiccup when we noticed the tire pressure was dropping significantly. At first, we refilled it, hoping that would solve the issue, but the problem persisted. In the next village, Bulls—a quirky little place with a distinct redneck vibe—we got it checked. Sure enough, there was a needle lodged in the tire. Thankfully, it was a quick fix and only cost us 30 dollars.

The rest of the drive was long but rewarding, with spontaneous stops whenever something caught our eye. The route was breathtaking, with rolling hills that looked straight out of Middle-earth—every turn seemed like it could reveal the Shire. One highlight was stopping at the Rivendell film location. Now a well-maintained park, it retains just a single arch from the original movie set. Nearby, we wandered through a small patch of rainforest, enjoying a refreshing walk after hours on the road.

Arriving in Wellington, we got in touch with Chris and Hannah, who had arrived earlier that day. We met up for a lovely evening of dinner (steak) and drinks, making plans to visit the Weta Cave together the next day.

  • Holiday 4: Wellington/ Weta workshop

    23. november 2024, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We started the morning slowly, walking around and enjoying a nice coffee.

Our first stop was a small Māori gallery featuring beautiful traditional art. After a quick look around, we picked up Hannah and Chris and drove to the famous Weta Workshop.

This incredible studio is where props, costumes, and sets for movies like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Avatar were brought to life. The tour was fascinating, offering a glimpse into the creativity and effort behind these iconic films. As someone trained in a similar field, it felt both inspiring and a little overwhelming, reigniting my urge to do more with my skills.

We couldn’t leave without picking up a few statues and gifts from the store—too many cool things to resist!

Later, I did some computer work and packed for our flight the next day. We wrapped up the evening with a lovely dinner and drinks with Hannah and Chris, cherishing the time before heading off to Christchurch and the start of our campervan adventure.
