    Chiang Kai-shek

    24 mars, Taïwan ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We walked around the grounds of Chiang Kai-shek memorial.

“Chiang’s legacy has long been a point of political contention in Taiwan. At the end of China’s civil war in 1949, Chiang, the KMT and millions of supporters fled to Taiwan in defeat. He established the Republic of China government in exile, and ruled Taiwan’s population under a brutal martial law for decades until his death in 1975, when power was transferred to his son. By the end of martial law in 1987 as many as 140,000 people were estimated to have been imprisoned and another 3,000 to 4,000 executed for actual or perceived opposition to the KMT.

But some in Taiwan say that legacy must be weighed against Chiang’s successes, noting that he also oversaw Taiwan’s path to economic prosperity, fought against the Communists and the Japanese, and founded Taiwan’s military academies. The KMT also still exists as a major political party.”

These rice triangles are very tasty and come in all sorts of flavors. We also tried Wax Apples. They have a similar flavor of a mild apple and a slight my softer texture. Almost like if you mixed the consistency of a watermelon and an apple. We made our daily stop at the 7-Eleven. It is a very popular convenience store here and there’s one on most every block. You can do a lot of things here like reload your MetroCard pay bills and of course, pick up snacks.En savoir plus

    Yinhe Cave Waterfall hike

    27 mars, Taïwan ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We hiked to the Yinhe Cave Waterfall and Temple. It was a hot but beautiful jungle hike. We saw a few fun critters and plenty of cool plants. The work Mao in mandarin means cat so the town of Maokong is all cat themed.En savoir plus

VoyageurBike lanes are often on the sidewalk. Watch where you are walkingI can’t decide if this is s good idea or not...keeps bikes away from cars, but like in Riverfront Park here, neither pedestrians or bikes fully obey the rules. did it seem like a good system there?

    Last night dinner

    27 mars, Taïwan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We ended our last day with an Asian BBQ dinner. We loaded up bowls with our choices of meat and veggies, then it was roasted on skewers and delivered to our table. It tasted devine! We wandered back through the Chiang Kai-shek memorial and had one last can of bubble gum soda.En savoir plus

Woke up at 5:30 to head to the airport. Gracie’s flight left 20 minutes after ours so we had some time to hang out before scattering to our respective home states. (All four of us currently live in different time zones: Vermont, Illinois, Montana, and Oregon.)En savoir plus
