I had to backtrack a bit on my way out. So I was back on US 50 for an hour to Ely. From there, I headed north on US 93 towards Wells, NV and I-80.

I stopped for lunch at Pony Express station. I had already passed a few stations on US 50. I am always amazed the lore and fame, considering it only lasted for 18 months! I had a taco salad for lunch, which was delicious.

I have to say, US 93 was just as "lonely" as US 50! I saw few cars and stopped to take pictures in the middle of the long ribbon of road.

  • California Trail Exhibit

    May 31, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

This was a planned stop only because it was listed as a rest area. But it was much more than that. It was a fairly large museum on the California Trail with really interesting exhibits. Unfortunately, I arrived 20 minutes before it was closing.

I walked through quickly and saw as much as I could. There was a lot of information about the Donner Party and the events that led to their misfortune. I really wish I had more time.

There were outside exhibits that were open for another half hour, so I walked around and looked at the wagons. What really surprised me was how narrow they were. Maybe 3 to 4 feet wide.

I had been noticing big brown bugs on the road for a while. They are grasshoppers, and I asked someone at the museum about them. They were around for 3 years, this being the last year. They are over an inch long, and we're all over the grounds at the museum.

    Next stop, Winnemucca.

    I just like saying, "Winnemucca."

I stayed at the Candlewood Suites, which is an extended stay hotel. It was the least expensive option. It was nice that it had a kitchenette where I could wash out dishes. Honestly, it was nice to wash me, too! After I took a hot bath, I had some antipasti for dinner and fell asleep watching TV.Read more

  • On the Road Again

    June 1, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

I didn't rush to leave, even though I had another long drive ahead of me. I repacked my duffel and made myself a salad for lunch. Unfortunately, the refrigerator froze my lettuce... well, it froze everything! I was able to find some usable leaves. The cucumber was garbage. 😔.

I was on the road at 10ish after getting gas. My route took me on another very deserted road as I headed towards Oregon. Once across the border, I stopped at Fields Station, which is famous for their milkshakes. My salad would have to wait until dinner. I had a $7.50 shake that was huge!

The rest of the drive was uneventful. I stopped in Burns, OR for gas and ice. But I waited until I got to a rest stop 15 minutes out of Burns to clean out the cooler and put the new ice in. I followed US 20 for most of the rest of the way, stopping at Brothers, OR (take that Sisters) to stretch my legs. There were prairie dogs everywhere. Very cute watching them pop up from their holes.

I left US 20 to go north to Prineville, where I am staying. There was some sort of off-road vehicle event, where I had to stop to let them cross the road.

    June 1, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

My final night was in Prineville, Oregon. It's just east of Bend, and I didn't know much about it. Not that I was planning to do any touring, but it was a cute town.

I arrived around 5:30pm. and had no problem checking in. My room was on the 2nd floor and from what I could tell, there was no elevator, whichever I thought wRead more
