  • Day 20

    San Francisco II

    July 21, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Day 19: At 5:30 I was awakened by a sweeper.
I drove the car to the sea side and got ready for the day.
California needs a Californian vehicle. So I exchanged the car today.
With the new one I got to the downtown of San Francisco, washed some clothes and ate lunch at a San Francisco style diner.
After all I went to the northern side checking the beach and area around it.
The whole day I was extremely tired because I slept just about 4 hrs last night.
Later I continued to Bodega Bay passing the Golden Gate Bridge. On the way I recognized that driving in the direction of western sea side while sunset is not that best decision 🙈 But the view of the sunset after I arrived was pretty cool!

  • Day 21

    Bodega Bay

    July 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Day 20: I woke up at around 2am. because a phone bell was ringing all the time. So I decided to get closer to the hiking trail to continuing sleeping.
I drove over an hour and saw tons of wildlife walking on the street. Suddenly the road turned to a gravel road that I didn't wanna drive on while darkness.
So I returned to the next town, parked beside the road and slept 'til around 8am.
After I got up I went to Bolinas. There I hiked to the Alamere Fall which turns directly into the ocean. In additional I walked beside Bass Lake, the Pelican Lake and the Bolinas Beach. Nice spots for taking photos!
When I was at my car again I got to Oakland and ate a spanisch dinner at El Paisa Taco Truck.
After all I recognized that I definitely need a effective night. Because off that and because it's almost half time I treat myself a pleasant night and was searching for a payable hostel, motel or hotel. Not that easy because all are sold out!
I found the last free room of Motel 6 in Fremont and reserved directly.
Now I'm sitting in a warm room with a coozy queen size bed, an own restroom and cold beer. An evening I needed.

  • Day 22

    San Francisco II

    July 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Day 21: The first milestone is reached, the first half is done.
I woke up after an pleasant night and drove back to San Francisco. There I checked in at our hostel, rested for a while and started to explore San Francisco.
I walked a loop thru the city seeing the harbour area and the Chinatown for example.
San Francisco is a nice city but has a lot of homeless and druc-addicted people - too much.
In the evening I went to a jazz bar where I wrote some postcards.

  • Day 23

    San Francisco III

    July 24, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Day 22: The last day in San Francisco. I had a long sleep before I left for the last things to do.
First I went to the Lombard Street where I was catched by a Google street view car (oops). Afterwards I continued to Mission District seeing some nice paintings on walls. After all I went to Market Street where I ate pancakes, bought a Shirt and went down to the harbour area again because we booked an Alcatraz tour. But because of the rush hour I had a delay and we missed the ship. We was able to change our tickets and will join the tour tomorrow.
After all we went to the jazz bar I was yesterday where a piano player was playing.
I asked him to play a tribute to Linkin Park and he played In the End focusing on Chester and Chris Cornell. Still incomprehensible.

  • Day 24

    Big Sur I

    July 25, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Day 23: First we did the Alcatraz tour we've missed yesterday. After a short ship ride we got there. It is just a small island with a small prison on it. But that prison has a huge and interesting history!
When we got to our car again we drove towards the Hwy 1 southern. And ja we are on the road again. After about 3 hrs we passed Monterey. Honestly the Big Sur is closed at the moment. So we were looking for a campground near to that point where it is blocked.
We found another kind family which let us camp on their site. Tonight we just relaxed. Tomorrow we gonna hike.

  • Day 25

    Big Sur II

    July 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Day 24: I had the first night in a tent after days. Not that pleasant but definitely better than a car.
Antonia decided to do a mountain hike. I wanted to explore the costs of Big Sur.
So I drove to Monterey and the cliffs look amazing. We got a step closer to paradise.
Suddenly I was closely to work in my vacation. I went to a restroom and when I came out I've seen the party. One collapsed old woman - a police car, a turntable ladder and a ambulance 🤔
Anyway after I was going to Fisherman's Wharf (of Monterey) I ate a burger and enjoyed the sun.
At the end I drove to Pebble Beach seeing the cost there.
On my way back I stopped at the pull outs of Hwy 1 especially the Bixby Creek Bridge.
After all I planned to have a look at Pfeiffer Beach. Google told me that it is not closed yet. But when I reached the Bixby Creek Bridge it was almost 7pm. So I returned to the campground.

  • Day 26

    Sequoia

    July 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Day 25: We got up very early to get to Sequoia national park. On the way we stopped at "Wiener Schnitzel". But honestly they didn't havea Wiener Schnitzel! Just Burger and things like that like MC Donald's.
Anyway we continued to the national park and reached it at about 1pm.
The trees there were extremely tall and huge. Very impressive. From the top of Moro Rock we had such an amazing view over the national park.
After all we decided to camp outside the park to make the upcoming trip shorter.
But we didn't really found a place to stay. So we drove all the way back to the west cost again. To Morro Bay this time. So it gonna be a short drive to Santa Barbara the next day.
We arrived at around 1am. A long driving day has come to an end.

  • Day 27

    Santa Barbara

    July 28, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Day 26: We had a long sleep before we started the day. And the day wasn't that nice.
A lot of clouds and dust has welcome us when we woke up.
We drove to the downtown of Morro Bay where we saw the Morro Rock. But the city wasn't something special to us.
So we continued to Santa Barbara quickly. Honestly all the clouds followed us along the coast.
In Santa Barbara we met two guys from Austria. They both are on a one year roadtrip to southern Argentina.
We joined them and so we camped together near Santa Barbara.

  • Day 28

    Malibu

    July 29, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Day 27: This was a lazy day. It took 'til 12pm until all of us were awake.
Antonia decided to join the Austrian guys for a few days because their trip is more flexible than mine.
But before we explored Malibu together. The first city on a coast with a blue sky and no clouds. The real beach was/ is extremely small. But the city itself is nice.
I wanted to get closer to Barstow/ Death Valley so I drove a little bit to a campground. There I neither find any place for a tent nor for my car.
So I was looking for I quiet place to park the car and to sleep in it.

  • Day 29

    Historic Route 66 / Barstow

    July 30, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

Day 28 (1): Today I had a lot of impressions so I split it.
When I woke up I had a phone call with Dan one of my travel buddies in 2015. He's actually also in the USA and gonna fly back one day earlier from LA as well. Maybe he joins me or I join him for a while. Would be great!
My first stop was Barstow. I drove the first part of the historic Route 66 to get there. The landscape beside the road was great!
In Barstow I visit an old railroad depot. Afterwards I went to Galico Ghost Tours an old ghost town.
After all I continued to Death Valley. On my way I saw the tallest thermometer of the world. On the photo the temperature cannot be read but there were 108 degrees (~42 in Celsius) 😰
