Topolio Gorge

3 mai, Grèce ⋅ 🌬 66 °F

Wanting to do a gorge hike, we found this one close by on all trails and decided to try it. It starts out along the road and makes its way down to the river. The trail meanders up, the river or along it, before climbing up at the far end.
Fun hike but wouldn't do it again.

  • Kiklomino gorge

    5 mai, Grèce ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

We loved this hike. It's about 2.5 hours long. You start out through the gorge and climb out the other side, top a ridge, and head back down the other side of the mountain.
There are a couple of spots that require a little climbing and / or hanging on to a chain bolted to the mountain for safety.
At the top, there are some old ruins, and all along the way, some beautiful views. Including views of the sea.
There were lots of tribes of goats and folds of sheep, and we met a really nice dog along the way.

  • Chania 2

    7 mai, Grèce ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

Since we never made it out to the lighthouse, the first time we were in Chania, we decided to go revisit today.
It turned out to be a pretty good day. Considering there was a cruise ship or two in town.
We made it to the lighthouse, and we got to visit much more of the old town that we didn't see the first time.

  • Aradena gorge

    8 mai, Grèce ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

We took a two hour drive to the other side of the island to check out a hike into this gorge. The drive was something else. We had to cross over the mountains, and going down the other side involved, hairpin turn after hairpin, turn. When that was done, and we made it to the sea, we had to turn around and go back up another mountain, which also involved hairpin turn after hairpin turn.
The hike didn't start very nice, but it turned out to be a pretty cool hike. You hike up to the edge of the gorge, and looking down, you see all the switchbacks going down and then back up the other side right in front of you. The trail actually goes into a cave and then back out on its way up the hill. At the top, on the other side, you enter the historic village of Aradina. It's mostly ruins now, but there are still people living there. Mostly, goat farmers.
Instead of hiking back into the gorge and up, we decided to cross the bridge and take the road back. It's a one lane bridge, and although modern, it looked a little sketchy.
And of course, the drive home required traversing the same roads we took on the way there.

  • Sunset at Elafonissi Beach

    9 mai, Grèce ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

Thinking we would watch a beautiful sunset on the beach, we left in the evening to Elafonissi to watch the sunset. It was another interesting drive along the edge of a mountain Narrow one lane road. It went through a couple of really neat tunnels.
But unfortunately, when we got to the beach, it was a little overcast.
We enjoyed it as much as we could. After the sunset, we had a wonderful dinner at the taverna, overlooking the beach. Even though it was dark and we couldn't see it.
I thought the road was fun on the way there in the daylight. It was even better on the return in the dark.

    Meskla to Zourva gorge

    11 mai, Grèce ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

According to the reviews, this sounded like it was gonna be a great hike. It started out really well, but the last half was not that great.
There were some pretty views along the way, but they were few and far between. It was all uphill on the way out and, of course, downhill on the way back. The worst part about the hike was the only open taverna in the town we walked to, did not have decaffinated coffee or plant milk..En savoir plus

    Leaving Greece 🇬🇷

    13 mai, Grèce ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Our last day after cleaning and packing we stopped in Chania on our way to the airport. Another delicious meal at the restaurant called Pulse. If you go, try the mushroom special.
We met the homeowner at the airport and began our long journey. We tried something new by putting shirts over our backpacks so the straps weren't an issue. By the time they got to Athens, they were naked.
With our THS membership we get two airport lounge passes. We took advantage with our 8 hour layover.
