How does public transport work in a hilly area? Funicular, cog rails and ascensores! The funicular and cog rail are small trains made for steep hills. There are 5 different rails in Genoa, 2 go uphill over a mile with 600-800 feet of climb.
The ascensores are public elevators which go up 18-20 stories (60-80 meters) some will hold 12-18 people.
They are all used quite often and run on regular schedules. Really interesting ways to get around.
Prior to our transport options, we swung by the house where Christopher Columbus lived as a child. Small tourist attraction now. Next door are the ruins of a 13th century church and it’s close to the Soprano Port, one of the many ancients gates into the walled city.
