    LaRochelle a great stop!

    November 9, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

LaRochelle was a super little stop. Walked 2 miles around town had a great lunch and enjoyed this cute medieval area!

La Rochelle is a city in the Charente-Maritime department and a seaport in western France near the Bay of Biscay. The Huguenots there rebelled in 1627 and 1628. La Rochelle is a coastal city in southwestern France and capital of the Charente-Maritime department. It has been a center for fishing and trade since the 12th century, a maritime tradition that's reflected in its Vieux Port (old harbor) and huge, modern Les Minimes marina. The old town has half-timbered medieval houses and Renaissance architecture, including passageways covered by 17th-century arches.

The most famous historical buildings that La Rochelle is known for are the three towers: The Chain Tower, The Lantern Tower, and the Saint-Nicolas Tower.

The city, famous for its seafood, oysters, ocean breezes, beaches, and architecture, is renowned for a reason. We enjoyed a nice lunch. Bill has red fish and CJ ate mussels cooked in white wine/garlic/parsley and onion. Delicious! It was a super stop!!!

    Nantes

    November 10, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Being the sixth-largest city in France, Nantes is one of the most famous and lively cities in the country. It actually serves as the capital of the Pays de la Loire region and holds a historically distinctive position at the crossroads of Bretagne and the Loire Valley.

Nantes and its surrounding area were the main producers of French printed cotton fabric during the 18th century, and the Netherlands was the city's largest client for exotic goods. Although trade brought wealth to Nantes, the city was confined by its walls; their removal during the 18th century allowed it to expand.

Before 1941, Nantes was part of Brittany. The Gallo and Breton languages are spoken in the city.

The bombings on September 16 and 23, 1943 are strategic air raids carried out by the Allies during World War II, on Nantes, France.

    Machines and cranes

    November 10, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

The isle de machines is a playground for young and old alike. The main attraction is the manufacturing of large animated machines. On permanent display is a mechanical elephant giving rides to 50 people at a time, a giant crane, and a multi level carrousel where each ‘car’ is animated by the rider. There were ships, fish, seashells, dragons and snakes moving up and down plus they had moveable parts that the rider controlled. There are tours of established machines as well as prototypes of new ones. The Minotaur, spider and scorpion queen we saw in Toulouse at the Guardians of the Temple were built here.
The main building was a ship repair facility. It was at least 150- 200 yards long -and 50-75 yards wide and 30 yards tall. It was huge!
Outside the facility the artist behind the machines also had sculptures and other very creative play spaces. Basketball courts with various heights of back boards and rims from 6 foot to about 15 foot high. A moon surface with trampoline jumping pads. A skate park with iron rails, benches and stairs for sliding. Paintings on the ground with hopscotch, mazes, four square, and other games.
This facility is on the Loire River and has a riverwalk area with benches and seats, as well as a swamp area with a metal walkway. Restaurants and a few ice cream shops.
The huge cranes were also pretty cool and obviously use for ships. The yellow one was named Hanger de Banane. Both were quite cool.
We enjoyed a walk around investigating it. Despite the fact uncle google thought it was closed today.
