    Day trip to Dresden

    August 25, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

We wanted to break up the 4.5 hour drive from Berlin to Prague and found Dresden almost exactly halfway. We’ve heard stories about this beautiful little town and it did not disappoint!
Late in WW2, the Allies dropped 3,900 tons of bombs and incendiary bombs on the downtown manufacturing areas and bridges, basically leveling the town. Like many cities, they rebuilt the original structures using as much original stone as possible. It feels like you are walking through a Baroque town.
We need to remember to come back when we have more time.

  • Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Jirka!

    August 26, 2024 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Met our good friend Jirka to get a tour of Prague. He’s helped to lead tours as long as we can remember. He loves the history of the city and shares his stories (or makes up new ones) all the time.
We traveled across the bridge towards the castle complex, looked around at the various cathedrals and churches then headed back across the pedestrian only Charles bridge towards our BNB.
Nice dinner at a Czech pub and back to recharge for the next adventure

    Prague Jewish Quarter

    August 27, 2024 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Lea, Glynn and Bill headed out today to visit the Prague Jewish Quarter, while CJ and Daisy worked in JJVA recruiting and the NYB!
Dinner with Cj’s former assistant Oldo and his son Kuba - a great authentic meal + a lot of catching up to do!!!
We toured 7 different synagogues (older Jewish population) and temples (newer, modern Jews) which provided different timelines of Jews in Czech and Bohemia and the challenges they faced. Jews were treated as a separate community from the various cities and depended on the kings to either grant or deny benefits. For a while, Christians believed lending money was a sin, so they assigned it to the Jews. When they discovered Jews were making huge profits and gaining assets, they started demeaning and treating them badly, making them wear various symbols or colors to call them out.
Of course all of this escalated horribly during WW2, which then led to more persecution post war as the German speaking Jews tried to return to Czech and other areas, but were mistreated as being German! Can’t win a break anywhere!

  • Baby Jesus/ Lennon Wall/Narrow Street

    August 28, 2024 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

There’s a 300 year old wooden carving of Jesus at the Church of our Lady Victorious. Over the years, people have created very elaborate robes to dress the doll for seasons, Church observations and other occasions. There are over 400 robes in storage and rotated through the museum.
The John Lennon wall started about 1981 in the lesser Prague section of Kampa island. It started as a peaceful protest against the communists going street art and paintings over time. This tradition continues as local and not so local artists come by to add their portion some blending some contrasting. It’s an amazing site attracting many tourists.
The narrowest street in Prague was found by CJ years ago. Since recommending it to Jirka and other guides, who largely thought it wasn’t something a tourist would want to see, most tour groups have a great time taking pictures and seeing how they can fit through the narrow slot.
