Jasna Gora - home to the Black Madonna

    August 16, 2024 in Poland ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

    Black Madonna of Częstochowa

The oldest documents from Jasna Góra state that the picture traveled from Constantinople via Belz.[6] Eventually, it came into the possession of Władysław Opolczyk, Duke of Opole, and adviser to Louis of Anjou, King of Poland and Hungary. Ukrainian sources state that earlier in its history, it was brought to Belz with much ceremony and honors by King Lev I of Galicia and later taken by Władysław from the Castle of Belz when the town was incorporated into the Polish kingdom. A famous story tells that in late August 1384, Ladislaus was passing Częstochowa with the picture when his horses refused to go on. He was advised in a dream to leave the icon at Jasna Góra.
Art historians say that the original painting was a Byzantine icon created around the sixth or ninth century. They agree that Prince Władysław brought it to the monastery in the 14th century

We had to visit separately as dogs are not allowed. Daisy enjoyed snacks and water and a nice walk!

  • Dwarves (Krasnale) of Wroclaw 1

    August 17, 2024 in Poland ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

The story goes that in the 1980s, during the period of martial law in Poland, the Orange Alternative, an underground anti-communist movement, began using dwarf images as their symbol of peaceful resistance.

Krasnale is Polish for dwarf or gnome.

The movement organized various protests and happenings, and the dwarves became a playful way for people to express their dissatisfaction with the regime without engaging in direct confrontation. This included using dwarfs in street art that covered communist propaganda.

This movement came to an end on June 1, 1988 with 10,000+ protesters wearing orange cone-shaped hats and shouting “Freedom for the dwarfs”. Over time, the city of Wroclaw embraced this symbol.

In 2001, a local artist named Tomasz Moczek started placing small dwarf statues throughout Wroclaw. These bronze dwarf statues can be found in various locations, often in unexpected or hidden spots. Each dwarf has its own unique appearance and theme, and they have become a popular attraction for both locals and tourists.

  • We found a bunch of the cheeky dudes

Ultimately, there’s an app for IOS or Android which presumably has the best listing. As you upload pictures you get points. There are more points awarded for the harder to find ones, like in a tower, restaurant or store. Since most photos are now GPS tracked, they probably have the most complete list.
We didn’t want to cheat and get the app, but it would make tracking them a LOT easier!

  • Rainy last day in Wrocław

    August 19, 2024 in Poland ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

A rainy last day. We slept in and read our books until 11:00. Then CJ took a nap and Bill played on the computer with the Dwarves of Wroclaw site!
Showers, cleaned up the airbnb and off for a walk. It started to sprinkle so we went to lunch at an Italian place. Delicious and authentic.
Took another walk and then CJ went back to do some recruiting work and Bill went off to find Papa Dwarf and some others. He was successful. Over all Poland was delightful and a super easy place to get around. People are friendly and kind. It is safe, clean and gorgeous.
We highly recommend Krakow and Wrocław but Warsaw is lovely too. We just like smaller towns. Off to Berlin tomorrow!!

We found close to 100 dwarves in all. There are a bunch of interesting stories behind them but in general, they make a great way to get tourists engaged in discovering the city. Because of the unique beginning it would be difficult to do in another city. That’s part of what makes them so special.

So here is Papa Dwarf, the one that started them all in 2000. Then our summary shots. Let us know if you want to see any specific dwarf.
