TravelerWhat a memorable experience. The farmer took us past the Cemetery to her upper field which is not used as her Grandfather told them it should never be farmed after he returned to the farm in 1921. We stood on the mound under which the bunker still exists - about a 300m direct line to Hill 60. She was generous with her time - it was the highlight of my day to be where Poppa had spent time.
TravelerThis lady is the current owner of the farm that Karch Wood cemetery sits within. Her grandfather was forced to leave the farm when the Germans came, and they couldn't return until 1921. She was cleaning the lane after they had cropped the sugarbeet from the paddock. She guided us through to the cemetery and up over the hill to where the underground bunker had been left and covered over. She insisted that showing us around was a matter of respect for those who had fought.
