  • Ski Week - Revelstoke

    March 23, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ❄️ 1 °C

2 days of heavy snow, one day of rain (i’ve never been as soaked in my life, not a dry piece of clothing on my body after a day of skiing), but on the fourth day we finally saw the sun. Revelstoke is famous for its powder, unfortunately it was too warm to have real powder despite of all the fresh snow. I enjoyed the skiing though, quite a change from Europe because here only about a third of the runs are groomed, so you have to deal with fresh/uneven/packed snow and moguls all the time. Black runs are never groomed, but there are unlimited options to ski off piste. Annette and I took a teacher for two half days, and the kids were happy in 3 full days of ski camp.Read more

  • Ski Week - Revelstoke to Jasper

    March 27, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

You think of Canadian winters as tons of snow and -30°? Both are true, we got a taste of the tons of snow today. What started out as pouring rain in Revelstoke turned into snow after our lunch break in Golden, and once we hit the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper it got scary. See for yourself!Read more

  • Ski Week - Jasper

    March 28, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ -7 °C

Great weather in Jasper and lots of Powder after the snowstorm the day before ( the one we were driving through). The ski resort is 30 km from Jasper and quite big. We had 2 great days with 3 other families, friends of my sister, and a real Canadian winter tailgate lunch. Who needs warming in the lodge if it barely freezing?Read more

  • Ski Week - Jasper NP

    March 30, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Remember the big wildfire last year that burned 1/3 of Jasper town and most of the forest in the valley? I took a walk through town this morning… most rubble has been cleared but it’s still desolate. And the burned forest is eerie. Still, the town and park are getting ready for the summer season. We walked around Lake Annette with all the kids and it was really nice. Rare to see frozen lakes and rivers in Germany! And the animals are still there- see photosRead more

  • More Skiing! Banff Sunshine

    April 3, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ -6 °C

After a few days at my sister‘s place in Edmonton, the two of us leave on a girls day out for another day of skiing close to Banff. We hit the slopes early after a night spent in Canmore. Fresh snow the morning, nice sunshine, and we were treated to lot herds of elk (Rothirsche) grazing on the fields and pastures along the highway back to Calgary.Read more

  • Writing on Stone Provincial Park

    April 8, 2025 in Canada ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

I can't help it and stop at 2 of my favorite places in Southern Alberta - a bird refuge in Lethbridge and Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. The latter is named for its petroglyphs, but the special thing for me are the hoodoos - amazing rock formations in the Milk River valleyRead more

  • Montana - Missouri and Bannack

    April 9, 2025 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 8 °C

The part of Montana I saw from Interstate 15 is exactly how you imagine cowboy country to be. I take 2 detours: to the canyon of the Mighty Missouri close to Great Falls, and then one of my favorite Ghost Towns: Bannack, the first capital of Montana. I visited already in 2022. It was actually lived in till the late 20s and is in great shape. You get more pictures in a second footprintRead more

  • Detour through Wyoming

    April 10, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Rather than staying on interstate 15, I decide to take the scenic road coming from Yellowstone National Park to Salt Lake City. Most of the day I thus drive through farming communities in Wyoming and Idaho, and there is still a lot of snow here >2000 m altitude. I test my new binoculars at Bear Lake national wildlife refuge, and see my first eagle! Logan Canyon brings me too much warmer areas by the end of the day. I went from 2° to 22° today.Read more

  • Logan - Logan Canyon - Bird Refuge

    April 11, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

My first day in Utah, the border runs through Bear Lake. I sleep close to the town of Logan and tour the downtown and historic houses. Then a drive through Logan Canyon, and finally I visit the famous Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge on the north end of the Great Salt Lake.Read more

  • Antelope Island

    April 12, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

The best way to experience the Great Salt Lake in at Antelope Island State Park. It is known for access to the lake and the bison that were introduced years ago. In the morning, I took part of an "Owl Prowl" and we saw wonderful Great Horned Owls living in a barn and also Burrowing Owls who live in holes in the ground. And I saw 2 coyotes! I also visit the old farmstead. An it's nice and warm!Read more

  • Salt Lake Area

    April 13, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

I spend the morning on Antelope, and then make my way towards Salt Lake City, stopping in a few communities with noteworthy buildings. And my bird watching continues at the Layton Wetlands. • Salt Lake City

    April 14, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

The most interesting part of Salt Lake City is Temple Square and the surrounding Mormon buildings. Very impressive and pompous I have to say. The rest of it is like any American city: very dead. Even on a Monday there’s hardly any traffic and virtually no pedestrians.Read more

  • This is the Place Heritage Center

    April 14, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I spent the afternoon in the This is the Place Heritage Center, part of open air museum with original reconstructed buildings, part memory for the first Mormon settlers. I actually like the monuments commemorating the hardship and suffering of this and all other settlers best. And the four-legged inhabitants of course!Read more

  • South of Salt Lake City 1

    April 15, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Stopping at a gas station, I see a sign for Cove Fort and decide to check it out. It was a trading post / telegraph station founded by the Mormons. The best thing about it: a Great Horned Owl! My next destination is Parowan Gap with Petroglyphs and Dinosaurs tracks.Read more

  • South of Salt Lake City 2

    April 15, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

In the afternoon I check out the town of Parowan, which is not very interesting except for a super cool antique store in an old gas station/motel. I can make my way towards Cedar Breaks national monument, exploring the side road to Yankee Meadows on a whim. Cedar Breaks is higher than 3000 m and I’m back in the snow.Read more

  • Around Zion NP

    April 16, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

I have a reservation in Zion national Park tomorrow, so today I spend time exploring some areas in the vicinity. First stop is back to Cedar Breaks NP, then to the Kolob Section of Zion NP, and I spent the afternoon in the fantastic Snow Canyon State Park. White rocks, red rocks and lava flow!Read more

  • The Vortex

    April 17, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

I spent the night north of St. George close to Snow Canyon State Park because I plan to hike The Vortex in the morning. Not a very long hike, but a beautiful area of red and white sandstone formations. After a last look down onto snow Canyon State Park I continue to Zion national Park, unfortunately it has become cloudy and rainy, so I just stay in the campground for the rest of the afternoon.Read more

  • Zion NP

    April 18, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

After heavy rain last night, the weather today was better than expect. I hiked the Watchman Trail before taking my bike to ride into Zion Canyon. Second hike of the day up to Scout’s Lookout a bit further for fantastic views down into the canyon. Great day with more furry friends. If it weren’t for the cold… it snowed!Read more

  • East Zion & Bryce Canyon

    April 19, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

The rain and snow have passed, and I take time in the East section of Zion NP among strawberry-blond rocks. Next stop: a few photos of Red Canyon, where I spent a lot of time on my last visit, but I rush on to Bryce NP for the Mossy Cave Trail and sunset on the rim viewRead more

    April 20, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Today I hike the Fairyland Loop in Bryce and a part of the rim walk again before making my way to Kodachrome SP with the best state park campground ever. Laundry time…
