  • Alberta Foothills

    July 16, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

I spent 2 rather lazy days in 2 different provincial parks - I really liked Police Outpost PP, right on the border to Montana. Finally some blue sky and sunshine!

  • Waterton NP Day 1 - Red Rock Canyon etc

    July 17, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Unbelievable landscape, rock in all kinds of colors. I waded through the canyon - that’s the way to do it! I also did 3 other shorter hikes

  • Day 4 - Crypt Lake Hike

    July 20, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Another day hike, 18 km or so, 675 meters up. Apparently named one of world’s 20 most exhilarating hikes by National Geographic for the ladder, tunnel and steel cable along a 100 m drop at the end. I tell you, I didn’t look down and was glad when this part was over!Read more

  • Powwow!

    July 22, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

I attended the Powwow (dance and drums, competitions, and camping - a 3 day clan gathering) in Stand Off on the Blood Indian Reservation. The Blood or Kanai are part of the Blackfoot Confederation

  • Coal Mining Towns

    July 23, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

I travel along the southern border of Canada along the Crowsnest Highway. Crowsnest pass communities started as mining towns, and there is a lot of history there

  • Okanagan Valley - Penticton

    July 28, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

I reached my most westerly point for now - the hot and semi-arid vacation hotspot of Canada. Back north from here. Lots of lakes, orchards and wineries here. I biked 50 km on a former rail track today

  • Skaha Bluffs Hiking

    July 29, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Famous for rock climbing, my hike in Skaha Bluffs turned out to be a lot more difficult than I expected, as it involved a lot of scrambling over rocks

  • Kelowna & Myra Canyon

    July 30, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Biggest city in the Okanagan, but main reason for me to spend time there was to bike another section of the KVR rail trail: Myra canyon with 2 tunnels and 18 trestle bridges

  • Glacier NP

    August 2, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Glacier is hard to access apart from the main highway running through it. It’s famous for, well, glaciers, some of which you can see from the Continental Divide. And a wildfire was just behind the next mountain range…Read more

  • Yoho NP - other impressions

    August 3, 2023 in Canada

Also in Yoho I visited the amazing Takakkaw Falls, Wapta Falls and biked a bit. Yesterday the air was full of smoke from wildfires, you could hardly see the mountains and it really smelled smoke. Add the high amount of water in the rivers and waterfalls speaking of accelerating global warming, that’s really scary. You feel the climate change hereRead more

  • Moraine Lake

    August 5, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

  • Trip to Germany

    August 10, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

You haven’t heard from me for a while as I was back in Germany for my mother’s 80th birthday. And while I was in Edmonton preparing for the trip, my bike was stolen off the bike rack on the car ☹️, which lead to an interesting discovery of how the Edmonton Police „helps“ you. Don’t you love hotlines?Read more

  • Elk Island NP

    August 17, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Back in Edmonton, a day trip to Elk Island, a National Park only 30 min from Edmonton. It was created to save buffalo from extinction in 1907. today there are 500 plains buffalo and 500 wood buffalo as well as 700 elk etc. Buffalo are also translocated to other parks wanting to reintroduce buffalo such as Banff. It was very hot yesterday and lots of mosquitoes- no wonder in a swampy area like thisRead more
