Day 125: Fly over Rio into the clouds

    November 22, 2016 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A very good morning, I had set my alarm to go Hang-gliding and all I needed was a confirmation that the weather was good. It was 😆, so I got ready to be in Sao Conrado at 7:45 a litte late but still on time I was awaited by Renato's wife ( the person to fly with and recommended by a friend). She showed me the way and since it is not without danger of falling from the air you have to sign some papers. Strangely this didn't alarm my senses and I just go with the flow. After this Renato was there and being very polite and appeared quite young (not younger than me) he showed real experience and was cool to hang out with. We got in this buggy which was cool on itself, and Renato called it the dangerous part which was funny because I think it actually was. It felt like a cart on the road and it was only frame with 4 wheels and some plastic chairs. Afraid of losing my stuff through the floor was my biggest concern, during the drive some stops made people get on the buggy and the kite or hang glider was also put on top. When at the top it was a short walk through the parc and we did some pictures while the hangglider was assembled ( way to quick and easy) within 10 minutes we were ready to go and did a trial run without hangglider. To be sure that you don't stop running Renato said to not look down because reflex will not tell you to run of a cliff. When all was done we hooked in and got checked by a third party. All was repeated accept for the run itself, he asked are you ready. I Definitely was and with the bungee jump in my head I didn't care about reflexes and looked down also and just continued running like he said. So awesome and awkward to just run of a platform not really thinking about the danger of falling down. The moment we were off... I suddenly had the feeling of being trapped in the air. There was nothing but air around and we flew. Such a wonderfull feeling and we went maybe 30km/h but it felt like less. As if we could be there for hours. In fact we had not that much time and after a nice tour and some great shots for the camera ;-) we were going to land at the beach. Some instructions later and the leg-straps that were released made me more aware of being airborne. At the moment before landing we went up a bit and down with high speed to the ground. That was exiting and we flew so close over the ground and way to fast to land without falling. Untill he lifted the hangglider and we slowed down very fast and with only 2 steps we stood still. A perfect landing haha amazing. They showed me the video's and I paid and sadly it was time to say goodbye. What to do with the adrenaline? Walk the beach have a drink and head to the center of Rio for a nice Free walk tour at 10:30. Here we go again, much fun nice spots and learned lot about Rio. There were more long stops about food and culture and I will save everybody the lectures haha. The stairs were amazingly done if you think about one man made this in his lifetime and also it was the end of the trip.
I went to Jezus the Redeemer from here and I had to laugh when I finally got there, Jezus was in the clouds and the clouds just showed up so 30 minutes earlier there should be a bit blue sky. It didn't matter there were some clearer moments and it had something fitting 😊. Heavenly I must say, normally I would have enjoyed the view and shoot some pictures and be done within the hour. Not this time, it was exciting to hope for a little bit of clarity and when it came everybody shouted in awe and took their pictures quickly haha😆. Much more fun and less standard. A shame about the view on Rio but I had seen it this morning as bird only had no picture of it all.
Ok time to leave Jezus in peace and I was happy with this next world wonder crossed in this fashionable way. Back to the hotel, to drop my stuff and move to another meeting point a pub crawl on foot this time. This Pub crawl was a nice thing to do because I knew nobody here and I started my world trip accidentally in a Pub crawl (or couch surf for some) so it seemed fitting to do haha. I arrived on time and ordered some food ( not to much if you looked at the price) but when it wad there it was enough to fill my stomach and 3 others had a small meal also haha whoops. The party moved on to a drinking game on the streets with cachacha (yes the booze for Caiprinha). We emptied the bottle with the 10 of us mentioning 2 things about yourself and 1 must be a lie. The person next to you guesses which is true, if correct the liar drinks. Easy. I failed when this guy had a fettisch for toys and again by making it to easy for the person next to me 😉. I drank more so I won that haha. We went to a cafe and to a club after that with the bus. From there it was advised to take a cab so I did around 2 o clock when the time was right for it and the free Caiprinha hour was finished also haha. A good night in Rio..... de Janeiro 😆
