    Castlerigg Stone Circle

    Castlerigg was built in the Neolithic period, roughly 4500 years ago, making it one of the oldest stone circles in Britain. It's also one of the most picturesque, as it overlooks the Thirlmere Valley with the mountains of High Seat and Helvellyn in the background. There are various theories as to why Castlerigg was constructed, but nobody knows for certain. It was mostly likely a site to mark and celebrate the winter solstice.Les mer
