Tryavna is one of those cities that everybody from Bulgaria knows about, but once you set foot outside of the borders of the country – nobody has heard of it.
The town lies at the foot of the northern slopes of Stara planina (Old Mountain, the Balkan). The population of Tryavna is approximately 10 000 people.
According to historical data, the region around the modern-day town was inhabited by Thracian tribes. A settlement had existed there as early as the 18th century, and by the 19th century, the town had already become a cultural and craft center. During the Bulgarian Revival Period (18th – 19th centuries), Tryavna Artistic School was established in the town.Read more
