Matera to Salerno

Had a rare english tour of the underground cistern this morning and met Penny and Meredith from Melbourne. Then to Casa Noha for interesting film on history of Matera - from neolithic settlements established due to spring water and easy defence to prosperity during the Renaissance and decline in 19th century even blamed on the Australian wool industry. Carlo Levi turned wider attention to the poverty of the cave dwellers in 1950’s till government forcibly moved everyone out. Abandonned till 1990’s before being transformed and becoming the 2019 European Capital of Culture.
Found the short way to the Duomo which would have saved many steps but this town is so hard to navigate due to the three dimensional aspect.
Shared antipasto platter with Melbourne girls then late bus through farmland and more rocks to Salerno.
Easy dinner of sausage and broccoli pizza. The broccoli has an intense flavour but looks like broccoli leaves and is much nicer than the flowery stuff we have.Read more

Salerno and Paestum

Cappuccino and sweet pastry in a cafe on the lungomare then the magnificent duomo. Helped some old lost Tennesse folk from a cruise ship find it so they lit a candle for me. Duomo was full of mosaics and the crypt was heavily frescoed. In the very lowest level are the roman ruins of the original temple. Saw the medieval aqueduct, then train to Paestum. Three ancient greek temples on a flat plain with steep rocky cliffs behind surrounded by pommegranite and fruit/ vege farms. Uniquely you are still able to walk into two of these temples. Met a real Australian archaeologist working at Taquinia.
Train back through farmland with acres of plastic greenhouses round Montecortine.Read more

Daytrip to Amalfi and Positano

Despite seeing many photos the real thing still makes a big impression.
Highlights were the view from VillaCimbone in Ravello, Amalfi cathedral and the overall beauty if the sheer cliffs with vineyards, lemon and pommegranite.
Lovely seafood pasta in a jar at Mama Rosa back in Salerno.Read more

Salerno to Tropea

Once again the italian public transport worked well and I arrived mid afternoon in Tropea. Passed many hill top ruined castles, fields of melons and small vegetable farms. Calabria has a more raw rustic and remote feel and the people are darker skinned and speak little english.
Had a gelato ( not the salami one or the Tropea onion one), admired the view of Santa Maria dell’Isola.Read more

Really enjoyable 3 hour trip in big rubber ducky round Capo Vaticano with numerous swim stops.
No english spoken but watching fat german men having to wear life jackets to go swimming, then wondering why they could not dive down was priceless entertainment.Read more

Lipari via Stromboli

Early departure on the Stromboli Express bound for Lipari via Vulcano. Apparently this was the first day the ferry was running this week due to high seas.
Well they were still high and I was stuck in a boat full of seasick germans. No one spoke english except one of the crew who had some english and kindly came and told me the basics as all announcements were in italian and german. Due to the Stromboli eruption 28 days ago, boats were re-routed so we were going via Stromboli as there were too many people going in the afternoon. They need to manage numbers in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Arrived in Lipari and the lovely quiet Il Cappero B&B with my own courtyard, view over town and only the sound of chickens and nature.
Swum just downhill, then home dinner of bbq chicken and salad and figs with total yoghurt. (And a red wine).Read more

Lipari

A small sleepin and relaxed breakfast where they boiled eggs to order in the aldi egg machine.
Bus to Canneto, walk to the Spiaggia Bianca which was grey but I paid 5euro for a sun bed and umbrella and enjoyed the warm water with view of Salina and Stromboli.
Back to town for lush tomato, eggplant, ham and caper panini at Gilberto and Vera.
Then to the extensive archaelogy museum established by Brea and Cavalier - urns, theatre masks, red figure vases and pieces from neolithic, greek and roman times.Read more

Vulcano

The island of Vulcano is a 15min hydrofoil away so daytrips do not get any easier. The hike up to the crater was great. A bit of steam and sulphur smell but fairly tame. 10km roundtrip and 800metre elevation.
The black sand beach had the clearest unsalty water so I had a dip off the rocks. Back for another late arvo swim at the local beach at Lipari.
Dinner was very ordinary tinned tuna, olives, capers, tomato pasta.
Chestnuts on the way home were tasty.Read more

Feeling lazy, and a bit weary but I caught the bus to Aquacalda on the other side of the island. Quietest place ever with a nice view of Salina, clear water but very stoney shore. Past old pumice mining eqipment and buildings abandonned and rusting away at Ponticello. This was largest pumice mining operation in the workd at one point. Though it makes the water aqua coloured, the dustiness kept me away.
Had mezzo-panini at the lovely Gilberto e Vera, afternoon dip then a bbq chicken.Read more

Lipari to Palermo

It was a calm easy ferry from Lipari to Milazzo, then bit of a hike to the train station for the pleasant trip along the north coast of Sicily. Checked into ordinary B&B in good location and I took the bus to Mondello, the art nouveau beach resort of Palermo.
Pam arrived after 10pm so we went out for dinner in the busy streets and caught up on our travel stories.Read more
