    Riding the Tobishima Kaido

    30 november 2023, Japan ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

After riding around several islands on the Shimanami Kaido, we took a ferry from Munakata (Omishima Island) to Okamura (Sekizen Island) in order to ride the less known Tobishima Kaido.
The Tobishima Kaido is a set of five picturesque islands connected by bridges to the mainland, Kure City which is adjacent to Hiroshima.
We really enjoyed exploring Mitarai, a small town that developed with domestic sea trade routes during the Edo Period when Japan was in “sakoku”, isolated from the rest of the world over 200 years until 1853.
