For the Birds – American - 3 minutes long
This particular film is from Pixar, a subsidiary of Disney, renowned for its pioneering work in computer-generated animation. In 2001, it earned an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. It was originally released in theaters alongside "Monsters, Inc." When you watch this film, pay special attention to the remarkable attention to detail in every aspect, from the visuals to the storytelling—it truly sets a high standard. I screened this film at multiple presentations festivals, and after the first one, someone humorously suggested that for the second festival, I could simply repeat this film five times to guarantee success.

Panyee FC – Thailand - 6 minutes long
Hailing from Thailand, this film is presented with English subtitles. It's a delightful blend of sports and culture, offering a unique glimpse into the true story of the Panyee Youth Football Club in South Thailand. The narrative revolves around a group of boys residing in an isolated fishing village in southern Thailand. Their passion for soccer is unwavering, despite lacking a suitable place to play. However, their innovative idea takes center stage and transforms their village in ways they could have never imagined.

Man Changing a Light Bulb – United States - 2 minutes
In 2016, this film emerged as the champion at the New York Drone Film Festival, showcasing a prime illustration of how drones have the capacity to capture visuals that would be otherwise unattainable, offering a distinctive perspective of our surroundings. This remarkable short film was filmed in the stunning landscapes of South Dakota.

    The Ridge - 7 Minutes - Scotland
Each year, the Banff Mountain Outdoor Film Festival acknowledges exceptional outdoor and adventure films, and the winning entries embark on a global tour. Our next feature is a 2014 award-winning film filmed on the breathtaking Isle of Skye in Scotland. This cinematic masterpiece incorporates stunning drone photography and a helmet camera to capture its awe-inspiring visuals. Throughout this series, you'll encounter several films that harness the power of drone photography, showcasing the unique perspectives and footage that only drones can deliver. The first time I watched this film, I found myself eagerly poring over the credits to uncover information about its mesmerizing soundtrack. Fortunately, I have a friend deeply immersed in traditional Scottish music, and she kindly shared her expertise to analyze the musical score. The film's music commences with a traditional Scottish melody sung in the Scottish Gaelic language. The composer, drawing from a classical music background, seamlessly integrates a classical orchestra and choir, resulting in a musical creation best described as "Scottish Fusion." As for the film's subject, I'll leave that as a delightful surprise. So, sit back, relax, and get ready to be captivated. Music: "Blackbird" - Martyn Bennett

    I Won’t Let You Down – American - 5 Minutes
We're about to venture outside the conventional boundaries of what we typically define as short films. Music videos have been part of our cultural landscape for over 35 years, effectively functioning as short films. While they revolve around a song, they offer boundless creative opportunities. For me, one video stands out as the pinnacle of creativity, imagination, complexity, and quality. It was created for the song "I Won't Let You Down" by the band "OK GO," released in 2014. This disco-influenced tune soared to #7 on the US Billboard charts and earned an MTV award for its remarkable video.

Let me share some intriguing details about this video. The four singers navigate Honda personal mobility units, controlled by the riders' subtle weight shifts. The army of dancers is clad in traditional Japanese school uniforms. The video features a staggering 2,328 dancers and an equal number of umbrellas, all captured entirely by a drone. What's truly astonishing is that, despite extensive rehearsals, the video was shot as a continuous, one-take masterpiece—no scene splicing or editing involved.
Check out other “OK GO” videos on Youtube. They are so creative.

    Sign Language - 5 Minutes - British
My wife would certainly be dismayed if I omitted a romantic-comedy from our program. In 2010, this film claimed the grand prize at multiple film festivals. It falls under the category of a "mockumentary" or "docucomedy," a style of film making that portrays fictional events in a documentary format. For those of you who appreciate British shows, your familiarity with British accents might come in handy. The film revolves around a man's final day on the job before embarking on a new career.Be sure not to miss the film's conclusion, as the plot continues even as the credits roll.

If I may offer a recommendation, one of the finest "mockumentary" feature films I've ever seen is "Best in Show." It delves into the world of dog shows and the eccentric characters that populate it.

    Mercedes Benz – (American) – 2 minutes
Today's program is sponsored by Mercedes Benz. I hate to have to do this, but I have two Mercedes commercials I have to show.

This is one of the most famous of Saturday Night Live commercial parodies.

Britain's Got Talent - 6 Minutes - British, of course
If you happen to recognize a video in today's program, it's likely this one. Nevertheless, even if you've encountered this video previously, I'm confident you'll relish revisiting it. These days, various countries host talent show competitions where individuals receive either a thumbs-up or thumbs-down to progress to the next round. This might just be the most renowned among those amateur performances, with over 250 million views on YouTube.

    https://youtu.be/RxPZh4AnWyk?si=YH50qkd7pvYjkRAu

I delved further into that particular video. It's quite ironic that Susan Boyle chose to sing "I Dreamed a Dream" in her 2009 debut performance. Her dream of stardom has undoubtedly come true. Following her breakthrough on "Britain's Got Talent" in 2009, she has released eight albums featuring her music. She's sold over 19 million albums and garnered two Grammy nominations. In 2010, she had the opportunity to perform in front of the Pope and a crowd of 65,000 people during a mass. In addition to her albums, she dedicates a significant portion of her time to charity concerts, raising funds for various causes, many of which involve children. Astonishingly, she continues to reside in the very village where she grew up and even started dating her first boyfriend in 2014. It's heartwarming to see such a happy ending.

    Commercials
When it comes to defining a short film, commercials serve as an intriguing example of thinking outside the box. They face the unique challenge of conveying a compelling message in just 30 seconds. It's not uncommon for me to be captivated by entertaining commercials, yet struggle to recall the product or service they're promoting. Comedy often takes the spotlight in commercials. I have four commercials in my collection, primarily sourced from Europe. We all have fond memories of proudly showcasing our new homes or apartments when we first moved in.

A Man and His Dog - Argentina - 2 minutes
Here we have a remarkable film selection—an award-winning public service announcement from Argentina, of all places. When crafting a public service announcement, the goal is to ensure the message stays etched in the viewer's memory. I first watched this video about a year ago, and I must admit, it has crossed my mind at least a hundred times since then. Each viewing leaves me with a resounding "WOW" by the end. This one's dedicated to all the animal enthusiasts out there.

The Bomb Shelter – France - 1 Minute
Even within the confines of a one-minute duration, some short films manage to weave in a compelling plot. This French film, complete with subtitles, emerged victorious in the one-minute film category in 2017. It narrates the story of a survivalist who constructs a bomb shelter, leaving his family questioning his sanity. However, their skepticism takes a turn when the need for the shelter becomes evident.

The Magic of Chess - 5 Minutes American
Among my recent discoveries, one film particularly stood out. This film is refreshingly straightforward, featuring interviews with elementary school children discussing the intricacies of a rather complex game - chess. While some of the children's dialogues might pose a challenge for listening, if you happen to have grandchildren, it could give you an edge. Ultimately, it's a charming little film.

Love at First Sight – 13 minutes long - British
Here is our next to last film.

For every film we showcase, it's important that I secure the appropriate rights to present them to our non-paying audience. When it comes to commercials or music videos, creators are generally quite receptive to having their work shared. However, for certain films, it may be necessary for me to reach out to the producer and request formal permission. I've found that when I explain the context, emphasizing that the film will be presented to a senior audience free of charge, most producers readily grant permission. In the case of our last film, coming up next, I personally reached out to the producer. Not only did he grant me the necessary permission, but we also engaged in a pleasant email exchange about short films and his own creative endeavors. During our correspondence, we delved into both the next film and our last one, which he also had a hand in producing.
While seeking permission to screen our last film, the producer suggested that I watch one of his more recent creations. Nevertheless, he expressed uncertainty about its suitability for our audience and left the judgment to me. The film in question revolves around a British retirement community, offering a blend of humor, enchanting characters, and stunning cinematography. It stands among my top 5 favorite short films of all time. However, it delves into a more profound and universal issue faced by seniors, touching on the realities of our aging population. I've kept this short film in my back pocket for years, hesitating to showcase it due to concerns about its potentially sensitive nature for some seniors. My intention was always to avoid causing any distress to the audience. Finally, I decided to sit down with a senior friend of mine who was confronting the same issue and screened the film for them. I asked for their opinion: Should I present this film? They emphatically responded, "Absolutely!" It addresses a challenging subject for our age group, but it does so in an extraordinarily beautiful manner. I'm a firm believer in maintaining a positive outlook, and I ask you to keep that in mind as you experience this remarkable film. If you're a fan of British television, you might even recognize a few of the actors, especially John Hurt, who takes the lead role. The plot carries a subtle twist, so I encourage you to pay close attention during the final 3-4 minutes of the film.

What an exquisite film. Each day, the gentleman rediscovers his love for his wife. The film confronts a formidable issue but does so with the utmost grace and beauty.

What Does Virgin Mean - 3 Minutes - British
So, without further ado, let's delve into our last film. Similar to certain British films, this particular production is somewhat risque in its approach, yet it stands as an absolute cinematic treasure. In this film, a parent is confronted with the challenge of explaining an exceptionally delicate subject. As parents, you may have found yourselves navigating similar conversations in the past.

I hope you enjoy these short films.

NOTE: I'm always open to presenting my short films to non-paying audiences. My only payment is seeing the smiles and laughter the films bring.

    Fresh Guacamole - American - 1:40 minutes

Harvest in Ticino – British - 3 minutes
In 1957, the BBC produced a short documentary that made its debut on April 1st of that year. It stands as one of the most renowned April Fools' hoaxes ever orchestrated. The Paperboy - India - 13 minutes long
This 2016 film has garnered numerous accolades at Indian Film Festivals and is a captivating piece of cinema on various fronts. It narrates the story of a young orphaned paperboy eking out a living in a bustling Indian city while being homeless. His survival hinges on his paperboy job, but he's also passionate about drawing, using available stones to etch his art onto walls. The boy's striking innocence and his remarkably natural acting shine throughout the film.In black and white and devoid of dialogue, this movie stands as a visual masterpiece. The cinematography exhibits an artistic and exquisite touch. The camerawork frequently employs a narrow depth of field, accentuating the focal point while gently blurring the background images. It's a film that invites multiple viewings, encouraging viewers to contemplate its deeper meaning. The vibrant shoes introduced into the boy's otherwise drab life symbolize color and joy, embodying a universal tale of hope cherished by every child. Additionally, this film underscores the profound impact that small acts of kindness can have on someone's life.

Five Minute University - "Italian" - 5 Minutes
It is important that I include something education, since I did teach college for many years. As a college teacher I realized there was so much truth to this short film.

In the early 1980s, there was a comedian who frequently graced the stage of Saturday Night Live, where he consistently portrayed the character of an Italian Catholic Priest named Father Guido Sarducci. Some of you might have fond memories of him, hence the use of quotes around "Italian."Beyond his SNL appearances, he was an active participant in the stand-up comedy circuit. What set him apart was his style; he wasn't your typical one-liner comedian. Instead, he crafted routines that spanned 4 to 5 minutes, offering insightful observations about our world. Some of these routines were nothing short of brilliant, showcasing his exceptional writing skills. Today, I'd like to share one of his routines from the early 1980s, entitled "The Five Minute University." Regrettably, the video quality may not be as pristine as we'd prefer, but I believe you'll still find it enjoyable.

Mr. Happy, Johnny Barnes - Bermuda – 11 minutes long
Hailing from Bermuda, this 2011 film introduces us to Johnny Barnes, a remarkable individual who truly stands out. These exceptional people leave an indelible mark on us, and Johnny Barnes is unquestionably one of them.

Intelligent Design - 5 Minutes American
I want to introduced everyone to the enlightening series of short documentaries known as TED Talks. TED Talks are brief lectures captured in front of a live audience. These engaging talks had their inception in 1990, under the motto "Ideas Worth Spreading." Their videos are freely accessible, and the "Ideas Worth Spreading" ethos imparts valuable insights into our world. Many of these lectures delve into the outcomes of research, shedding light on various realms of science, technology, and culture. Speakers are allotted a maximum of 18 minutes to present their ideas in the most innovative and captivating ways possible. Today, I'd like to showcase a relatively short TED Talk. The title, "Intelligent Design," may seem like a playful turn of phrase, but it perfectly encapsulates the essence of the talk.

    J-Mac – 6 minutes – American
I'm an avid sports enthusiast, and one of my cherished sports quotes hails from President Harry Truman. It's been recounted that one of his aides observed a curious habit of the President's – when Truman perused the daily newspaper, he unfailingly turned to the sports pages before anything else. Intrigued, the assistant inquired about this habit. In response, President Truman offered a profound insight: " The sports pages are filled with man's achievements, while the front page is dominated by his failures." Now, turning our attention to our next film, it's unquestionably a testament to remarkable human achievements. This film, produced in 2006 by ESPN Films, was created with the noble purpose of raising awareness about autism.

    https://youtu.be/RmaIsE2nLZk?si=NjgO8fuPDBkl1dF_

This film never fails to bring a hint of emotion to my eye. It originates from the year 2006, and my curiosity led me to follow up on Jason to discover what became of him. Each year, ESPN presents awards recognizing outstanding athletes and other notable sporting achievements. In 2006, Jason received the prestigious ESPN award for the best sports moment of the year. Remarkably, he outshone contenders such as Kobe Bryant's 81-point game and George Mason's remarkable run to the final four. Jason's journey also led him to encounters with luminaries like Oprah Winfrey and President Bush. For many years, he has been quietly and diligently working in the bakery department at Wegman's in his hometown near Rochester, New York.Notably, Jason passionately travels across the United States, dedicating his efforts to raising funds for autism research. Furthermore, since 2007, he has been actively contributing as an assistant basketball coach at his alma mater, Greece Athena High School, working alongside Coach Johnson, who commends his burgeoning knowledge of the game. This heartwarming story truly shines in every aspect.

Puttin' on the Ritz - 6 Minutes - Russian
Now, let's explore a music video genre known as the "flash mob." Flash mobs had their heyday a few years ago and, much like disco and streaking, they eventually faded into obscurity. Nonetheless, during their peak, some flash mobs were truly astonishing.

Are you familiar with the concept of a "flash mob"? For those who aren't, a flash mob involves a group of dancers or musicians spontaneously performing in a public place, without prior announcement. Typically, one or two individuals will initiate the performance by dancing or playing music, gradually drawing more participants from the group. At first glance, it might appear as if those joining in are simply random spectators. However, the performance is intricately choreographed. The following video represents one of the finest examples of a flash mob that I've ever encountered. It features a large number of participants, remarkable dancing, and revolves around a Russian wedding. Moreover, they've selected an excellent piece of music – Irving Berlin's 1929 classic, "Puttin' on the Ritz."

    I’m So Excited – 6 Minutes - American
Perhaps some of you have come across this remarkable composite video that features dancing scenes from classic films. The synchronization of these vintage dance clips with a contemporary song is truly impressive. My wife and I have been passionate about ballroom dancing for nine years now. While I may not consider myself a master, I've gained at least the ability to appreciate and identify skillful dancers when I see them. This particular video showcasing the talents of great dancers from old movies is quite enjoyable. It's a fun challenge to try and recognize both the stars and the movies these clips are extracted from.

Let’s Go to the Beach – 5 minutes long - Scotland
When it comes to past films that consistently attract attention, "The Ridge" stands out. In "The Ridge," we witnessed the awe-inspiring biking skills of Scottish rider Danny MacCaskill as he conquered a Scottish mountain. And now, Danny returns with his latest creation, "Let’s Go to The Beach."

Each year, the Banff Mountain Outdoor Film Festival acknowledges and celebrates exceptional outdoor and adventure films. These award-winning films then embark on a worldwide tour. I distinctly remember viewing this particular award-winning film a few years back during one of their World Tour screenings. This short film was shot on Gran Canary Island, a Spanish island located off the coast of Morocco. The location is undeniably breathtaking. Just like Danny's previous works, the cinematography is exceptional, often incorporating stunning drone shots. ...and, of course, his biking skills continue to astound.

After witnessing these incredible feats, it's astonishing that Danny is still with us.

    Lifted - 5minutes long - American
Let's journey back to your childhood once more, beginning with an animated classic. This particular gem hails from the illustrious studio Pixar, a proud subsidiary of Disney, renowned as the foremost pioneer in computer-generated animation. When faced with the task of selecting a cartoon for our viewing pleasure, it's impossible to overlook the sheer brilliance of PIXAR. You might recall the enchanting Pixar avian adventure from our initial session. In this film, pay close attention to the meticulous craftsmanship that permeates every aspect, from the visuals to the narrative – it's truly top-tier. Observe how this seemingly simple cartoon has the remarkable ability to evoke a myriad of emotions, all without the need for spoken words.

The Red Balloon - 34 Minutes - French
Back in 1956, this film clinched the coveted Oscar for short films, and it has since become one of the most cherished tales for children, achieving iconic status in the world of short films. Its enchanting narrative unfolds on the charming streets of Paris, where a young boy en route to school stumbles upon a red balloon ensnared on a lamppost. Little does he know that this balloon possesses magical qualities. The film takes us on a whirlwind of adventures as we follow the boy and his extraordinary Red Balloon. If you've ever had the pleasure of visiting Paris, you'll be entranced by the nostalgic allure of the 1950s Parisian street scenes in the movie. Much of the filming transpired in the Montmartre district of Paris, a place I had the opportunity to stay in a couple of years ago. The stark contrast between the vibrant red balloon and the otherwise drab, gray cityscape is truly striking. It's a masterpiece in its simplicity, featuring just two real characters - the young boy and the red balloon. This film is a delightful gem not only intended for children but profoundly about the essence of childhood itself. The young boy's authenticity is truly heartwarming.

Despite being a French production, the film doesn't rely on spoken dialogue. Instead, it communicates its beauty through visuals and emotions. It's simply a breathtaking and profoundly beautiful cinematic creation.
