    DAY 1 complete

    Goal:
    arrive to Warsaw - achieved

Found a roadside “apartment hotel” for a surprising 30€ night. Huge room with kitchenette and bath tub 💪
    http://www.booking.com/Share-AywW04

Driving for 13h (980km), observing speed limits and making 4-5 quick stops.

Average fuel consumption for the day: 5,1L

    Lessons learned:
Could make it easily with one full tank from Estonia. No point topping up elsewhere as prices here are approximately 1.59€/L, which is better than in Lithuania.

    Fun fact:
Since we’re commited to making 8,000 steps minimum each day, we made a short stroll around the block upon arriving and found a big cemetery beside the venue 😳

  • Czech, mate!

    4. mai 2022, Tsjekkisk Republikk ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

The scenery gets better and better… and as soon as you’re off the highway, well-equipped gas stations are harder and harder to find. Major highway congestion in Poland slowed us down nearly an hour. Trust Waze time estimates!Les mer

  • Viin - Vienna - Wien

    4. mai 2022, Østerrike ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    Made it finally to Vienna!
The roads were twisty and slow + there was occasionally heavy rain.

The small Czech villages on the way were beautiful!

After 2 days’ diet of nuts and sandwiches in the car, we were craving something proper. Found a cozy Peter Pane snack bar near the hotel by accident.

Prices == Estonian. Which makes the Estonian side seem overpriced.

  • Breakfast and coffee

    5. mai 2022, Østerrike ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    Good morning!
    Sleeping score 100! ☺️

As the hotel breakfast was independently reviewed as not worth the price, we shot out to explore the neighborhood. Turned out this hotel Mercure is very well located, a short walking distance away from the pedestrian street Mariahilfer Straße. Maybe not all about the high-end brands but a lot of shops and boutiques to easily spend half a day exploring.

The superfood Deli was a “google find” and although on the expensive side, the smoothie bowls and coco-lattes were very enjoyable.

  • Highway to Graz

    5. mai 2022, Østerrike ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We were struggling with Waze all day. It simply refused to take us via the main road, trying to divert us off the highway all the time and offering ridiculous arrival times. Finally decided to skip Graz town and make it straight to Italy.

Gave up on Waze and used Google maps for driving 🤷‍♂️

Fuel prices on the highway and in Austria were awe inspiring - 2.195€/L, since we still had half a tank we skipped the top-up. But decided to try some of the truck drivers’ food… Dry and salty.

  • Verona and Bellagio still out of reach

    5. mai 2022, Italia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

By the time we crossed the border to Italy, it became clear that driving for another 5 hours was going to be too much. So we made corrections and chose something unexpected along the way.

This is I Comelli Agriturismo near a small town called Nimis. A beautiful and quiet place. Will look at it properly in the daylight ☺️

The homemade dinner and proprietary wine were excellent!

    Food + Wine = Instant sleep 💤

    Good night!

  • Change of plans

    6. mai 2022, Italia ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

One of the benefits of an open ended trip is that you can always remain flexible and adapt to the conditions.

Speaking of weather in Verona and elsewhere, we decided to skip the Garda and Como areas completely and head straight south towards France Riviera.

On our way we dug out another fantastic agriturismo homestay - Nonna Du

The restaurant was FULL! Seems to be a very popular place amongst locals and tourists alike…

  • Next stop Genova

    7. mai 2022, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

It was really tricky to get down to the ground in Genova, as the main route is on an elevated highway through the city. There was a total catacomb of a parking house, where we could not find a place to enter. It was like from a science fiction movie, dark and ominous. After some aimless wandering parked the car a bit away from the busy port area. Daily parking pass cost 4.5€Les mer

  • Menton

    7. mai 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Made it to the shore of the Ligurian Sea!

We tried to plot our route without toll roads, to see more, but at the end of the day available time makes the choices for you - toll roads vs small ones had a difference of over 2x. The toll from Genova to the border of France was appr. 20€.Les mer

  • Monaco

    7. mai 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Next logical must-see place was Monaco. It is a city-nation most densely populated in the world (over 18,500 residents per sq km).

Driving your car in Monaco is not for the faint of heart, it requires nerves of steel. Waze helps as it can, but half of the action takes place in underground tunnel systems where GPS cannot reach. You miss a turn or take a wrong exit at a roundabout and the next chance you get to correct yourself might be at the other side of the city 🤦‍♂️.

It seemed half of the mountain-side has been carved out into parking lots and tunnels.

The Monte Carlo Casino square never fails to impress if you arrive there at the right time. The “Bold and the Beautiful” leaving their Lamborghinis to valet parking is both a bit ridiculous as it is a show for the crowd. Everyone’s filming 😂

  • Night in Antibes

    7. mai 2022, Frankrike ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

When we left Monaco, it was already late and we yet did not have a place to stay overnight (as we were not sure how far we will drive).

Nothing caught our eye in Nice, so we drove straight through it into Antibes, which seemed more budget friendly.

Made a fast decision to stay at Ibis Hotel there, which we certainly cannot recommend here 😂

The hotel looked worn out, corridors dark and damp. The room was okay though and although the conditioner was only able to heat, we could open the window for the night.

As we arrived after 21:30 the restaurant was closed so we grabbed a beer at the lobby for a price that would suit a hotel in Monaco 🤦‍♂️ - 9€ for a pint of Italian draft. Still, it did its job to help fall asleep…

Luckily breakfast was included, so we could start off early the next day.

  • Barcelona

    8. mai 2022, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The trip from Antibes to Barcelona took about 7 hours (650km) and tolls were around 21€.

There were traffic jams when approaching Barcelona which delayed the arrival some 15 min.

At first we tried to visit Park Güell, but interestingly tickets were SOLD OUT at the gate 😳

Then drove to Sagrada Familia, which has evolved from the last time i saw it several years ago. Alas, admission to the interior was closed for the day.

Then we headed to La Rambla, parked the car underground next to it and had a nice walk to an Asian restaurant, randomly picked from Google - an interesting name, but we hit the jackpot - it was really lovely, delicious and affordable! I have included the link to their menu which could be accessed via a QR code on the table. A small tablet was provided to have a look at the pictures of dishes- a nice and useful touch 😉

  • Sitges - Hotel Medium Romantic

    8. mai 2022, Spania ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

There’s a hotel a short drive (with toll, still) outside of Barcelona with an intriguing name - Hotel Medium Romantic (dunno why “medium”, I’d say it was “very” romantic 😂

It is pure vintage and authentic. Nothing posh here, even the slightly smelly sewer in the bathroom ☺️

The breakfast was one of the richest and fullest so far 🍳

If you’re up for an adventure, this place cannot be easily forgotten:

    http://www.booking.com/Share-IdzrFln

Apparently the hotel has a lot of history - many of the famous contemporary artists were meeting here regularly, including Piccasso himself.

All of the artwork on the walls is authentic!
