    April 25, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

After a bit of a wait to get the next leg's boarding passes and a hike through 3 or 4 security checks on our way to the terminal gate, we are now going to enjoy a coffee and pastry. Leaving in about 2 hours for Vienna.Read more

    April 27, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

A quiet day relatively speaking. Some light walking (except for those who chose to run a 5km parkrun), lots of waiting for luggage, a pre-dinner drink at the delightful Cafe Wortner. And to preempt our next legs, authentic Italian pizza for dinner. Also got to see the actual Danube and not just some canal pretending to be a river.Read more

    April 28, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

A much busier day exploring the city. 23,000 steps actually. Early morning walking when quiet before breakfast. Afterwards we walked to the famous Naschmarkt to get picnic stuff. However, being a Sunday everything was closed. 😔Off then to the only supermarket open on Sundays. The afternoon was spent wandering through parks, cobblestone streets, and imposing buildings(Eg. Hofburg) . A picnic lunch at the Volksgarten amongst the roses and hundreds of tourists and locals. Then we wandered some more through the old streets to the Globe Museum - weird but interesting. Our final stop for the afternoon was at Haas&Haas tearooms. A delight that I heartily recommend. Finally we made it back to the apartment to rest our legs a bit before walking down to the local restaurant for schnitzel and goulash.
Tomorrow it's off to Riomaggiore (Italy) via Salzburg and Milan by overnight train.

    Apr 29–May 3, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

3hr train to Salzburg through farmland with alps as backdrop. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this. Salzburg is a feast for the eyes. Every direction, every street and alleyway is a photo-op. I'll be back.Read more

    April 30, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Arrived by overnight train. Slept OK given the cramped cabin, except for the 5:00am wake up alarm. We only had a few hours to see anything here so we chose a few iconic places that are near to each other - LA Scala theatre (covered in scaffolding😩), Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the Duomo. So many tourists and it's not even summer. Next we had two more trains to catch to get to Cinque Terre on the west coast. This included a 100 minute wait at Milan station for them to fix some fault that delayed our train's arrival there.Read more

    May 1, 2024 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

With the delay in Milan we didn't get here until almost dark. We quickly settled into the apartment then had dinner at the restaurant 50mtrs away. The plan was to visit each of the 5 villages by hopping by train. Apparently thousands of other tourists had the same plan. Still, it was easy enough as the trains are large and fast.
Each village is unique and fascinating. My favourite was Corniglia. Unfortunately it was a wet day and we have to come back in sunnier times.
Got back to Riomaggiore after dark to have dinner at yet another gorgeous little restaurant.

  • Lucca

    May 2, 2024 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

A wet side-trip to Lucca. It is a walled city, and they are massive. 15 meters high and wide. Nowadays there are parks, gardens and walking paths on top of the walls. Just inside the walls there are apartments and business offices. Then you get a maze of narrow lanes and squares, filled with shops and eateries. Plus the odd historical building - towers, churches, palaces, etc. But it was too wet to do much exploring, so we found a nice piazza with cafés and sat down to have wine.
    Next stop - Genova.

We got here late and the way to our apartment from the station was long and convoluted. From the main station we had to find the subway, then another train to get closer to the apartment, then wind our way through the tiny alleys that they call streets. Thankfully our host met us outside the apartment building because it was not clear it was our building. Up six floors in a two-person lift, but it was so worth it.
    Tomorrow we start exploring.

Not as flash as lake Como but so much better. Hardly any foreign tourists but heaps of Italian ones. Will be back.
