    June 21, 2016 in Egypt

Went to Beano's tonight. Had a good time.

They made us leave early because they "don't serve sohoor"

Whatever that means. They actually kicked us and everyone else out.

Greatest thing was that there was an entire playground for the kids. They had a blast.

When we left, mostafa tipped some random dude after we backed out of our parking spot. He said random people assign each other certain blocks to "protect" your car and you tip them for their "services". This is a really bizarre system of organized begging for doing nothing.Read more

    nice evening at Sammy's

    June 20, 2016 in Egypt

We had a great evening tonight in a really nice setting. All had a blast girls payed in the pool and played pool downstairs in the basement game room.

Never saw a basement in Egypt. It was really nice but the funniest thing was that the entrance was from a marble staircase around the backside of the house. Only entrance from the backyard.

Basement, 1st, 2nd and a penthouse suite as he called it.

Greatest thing were two oscillating 40 inch outdoor industrial fans.

The whole city was really nice every building was clearly built with a master plan and all flowed nicely. Very rare to see this in old egypt.

    first bout of something

    June 22, 2016 in Egypt

I think too much of the item pictured below has put me in the bathroom way too much. That coupled with flu like symptoms, body aches, fever and cloudy head make for a wonderful way to experience Egypt.

Par for the course, it happens to us all, at least once.

5:10 am means it's time to get into bed.

    Goodnight to all.

    last night

    June 19, 2016 in Egypt

I'm not harping on the bad but just pointing out the funny in general. But there a lot of good things this country has to offer. Most importantly the fact that I can order this at 2 in the morning and someone comes up to my door and delivers it is phenomenal.

Fact that a falafel sandwich amounts to less than $0.22 is even more impressive.

Apparently my daughter's love the french fries with cheese sandwich on pita that one is a whopping 5 pounds but of course I ordered the dynamite for myself which is basically a mixture of every possible Egyptian food item in one sandwich. By the way it's pronounced "deenameet" in case you ever want to order it.Read more

    travel egypt style

    June 20, 2016 in Egypt

This is how the girls came back for the ride home. . . So safe!

Of course we saw a bunch of men huddled around a dead guy that had just been struck by a car. That's how safe it really is. Drivers are crazy, pedestrians even crazier and no value for life.

    MacGyver in Egypt

    June 24, 2016 in Egypt

    You have to be creative.

No doorknob on this side of our room.

Had to come up with something so that we could get out.

Started with a curtain hanger . . . Short lived.

Graduated to a small fork . . . So thin and of such poor quality it bent and broke.

Now we're at the best quality fork I could find . . . We'll have to see how long it lasts.

    will they ever wake up?

    June 19, 2016 in Egypt

I'm starting to think they're dead. In a little bit I'm going to poke them to see if they stir.

Don't mind the room it's first night chaos. In three weeks when it looks the same or worse, then you can say something.

    going here tomorrow

    June 29, 2016 in Egypt

Hebah, the girls and I are taking off on our own excursion without anyone else. IsA.

We're going to the hot eye or as the locals call it Ein El sokhna.

Hopefully we'll get a break from the banging above our heads for a few days. Take in the beach, get away from the monotony of cairo and relax for a change. Actually we might never come back.

    Supposedly the best resort there . . . We'll see . . .

    July 2, 2016 in Egypt

Had koshary, pasta content too high.

I had size big (aluminum tray). Everyone else size normal. As you can see in the picture comparison.

The packets are great with the garlic, hot and onions.

Favorite new egypt drink . . . See below.

    July 4, 2016 in Egypt

Went to hala (hebah's cousin) afterwards for suhoor.

The guy pictured below (white kufi and grey galabia) bangs a tabla every night in the street and calls to the people to wake them up for suhoor. As if they're not already awake.

He knows most of the people in the building and he teases the young kids especially. He calls out to Hala's son Ziad every night.

I also got video but I'm sure you've all heard about the Internet woes so I won't even attempt an upload.

Hala is the Egyptian culinary master over here. Always likes to make new things for me to try. Tonight's new items chicken cordon bleu was amazing swiss cheese ham and all. Don't know how she found thick halal ham but she did.

Also made smoked foul. Pretty creative and tasted great. Never ceases to amaze.
