  • Tube

    July 31, 2024 in England ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Looking very tired but we are here and on our way to the train station and on to Lille.

The tube has this odd announcement about things happening and reporting it - See it, say it, sort it

  • Hotel Brughel (Bru-HELL)

    July 31, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

Ok it wasn’t that bad, but I did screw up and didn’t refresh the AC filter in my search. Thus - no AC and it is rather warm. I had a small fan and the hotel lent us one. Took cool showers and went to bed with the fan blowing on us.

Pretty lobby and friendly folks but oh so small.

  • 3 Brasseurs

    July 31, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

Of course Bill found a brewery and I learned new French vocabulary I didn’t know related to brewing and hops (I was more wine when I lived in Dijon)

  • La Vielle Bourse

    July 31, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

We didn’t get to spend a lot of time in Lille, but did take a walk by the Vielle Bourse - old stock exchange. A stunning building with a beautiful clock tower and the Opera nearby to admire as well. I would definitely come back and explore more if we had the chance.Read more

  • Olympic Basketball

    July 31, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Our first Olympic event - US Men v South Sudan basketball!!!

The bus ride there was rather unpleasant as there is no AC and very little moving air.

But the energy and excitement at the game was awesome. The stadium is the 4th largest in France and is impressive!

There were many French fans watching swimming on their phones and the cheering for Marchand was awesome to hear and almost more exciting than Steph Curry or Kevin Durant!

  • Place de la Bastille

    August 1, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

On our way to ma Mamou for our bakery tour and class, we spent a little time at Place De La Bastille.

The first of many Olympic Ring pictures….but we hate standing in line so they all will likely have other folks in them!Read more

  • Bakery class

    August 1, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

We took a bakery tour and class at Mamon bakery. Our guide was Moumou and he was really fun. Turns out he is planning to come to Texas so we told him we would take him for BBQ.

They make 2000 baguettes per day …each one is a 4 day process! Hundreds of pastries and macaroons.

This little girl was half cute and half annoying but was overall fun.

The class was more tour with a little hands on, but was really fun.

  • Notre Dame

    August 1, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

Made a point to cruise by. Love that they have stands to sit and watch the work. Also the exhibit that highlights all of the artisans who have made it possible.

Wish it could have been ready for this trip, but nice to see the work happening too.Read more

  • Terrasse des Jeux

    August 1, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

Just a fun area for fans to hang out, watch sports, play a few games. Fun place to cruise through and have a beer.

It’s amazing to see these stunning old buildings with all the branding and modern signage affixed.Read more

  • Cafe Maslow

    August 1, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

We needed a stop and rest and chose this place. They pulled the “you’re tourists” card and said we had to order food with our wine. Fine.

So we ordered “French Nachos”. lol. Buckwheat tortillas, gruyère and some sort of meat concoction.

Still felt good to rest a bit.

  • Le Golf National

    August 2, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

A bit of a haul to get to, but the grounds were lovely and there were sooooo many more people out to watch golf than I ever expected. We found a spot by the first hole where the players come out so Bill got to see some faves up close and personal. I had some coffee in the shade with some of the bread and pastries from our class.

I want to be the guy who gets to hold up the "silence" sign. Actually, can I have one to carry around in my daily life? There are often people I'd like to shush!

Eau la la for the hydrations stations. Clever French marketing folks!

  • Indiana?

    August 2, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

A little break for a drink and snack before the catacombs. We saw several of these Indiana places in Paris. I don't think that logo would work in the US anymore.

Also - Mexico has the best fans! They were all over and so proud!Read more

  • Catacombs FAIL

    August 2, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

We have used Viator for many tours, classes, and experiences for many years. Today it failed us.

I bought tickets for the catacombs so we didn’t have to get there early and get in line. The company only sent a voucher, not a ticket. No vouchers accepted and no response from the company. Viator’s response is “they are no longer affiliated with us”. Not much help.

    Boo.

  • Club France

    August 2, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Club France was a lot of fun. And only 5 euros each. Great celebration of French sports, getting kids excited. We got to hold the torch and see some medals.

And it was fun to see the crowds just sitting in the grass watching fencing on the large screens and having a good time.Read more

  • Serbia House

    August 2, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Great chance to explore other places. As opposed to the sports - or making money off us like the US- Serbia had a neat history of their experience competing as Serbia in the Olympics.

We did have a scary moment. We were using the bathroom and getting ready to leave when the police came in and told us we all needed to leave. They needed to evacuate. Not sure what was going on, but they didn't have to ask us twice!Read more

  • Hard Rock Cafe

    August 2, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

The usual trip to a Hard Rock for Bill to add to his collection.

We had a great bartender and he actually traded pins with me. Our first pin trade.

  • Ireland House - bust

    August 2, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We bought tickets to the Ireland House thinking it would be like the French house - a big nod to the country and culture.

Ireland house was a bust. Just a bar. A packed bar. Our 25 euros got us nothing but in the door.
No music, no food, no cultural experience. Just a packed bar with sports on. Really really packed. We had one drink and left.
They even had Corona coasters! Ugh.
