A trip two years in the planning to be part of the Paris Olympics, as well as getting to Champagne, Dijon, Mont St. Michel, and Beaches of Normandy to pay our respects. Read more
  • Jardin Darcy

    August 7, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Had to stop by Jardin Darcy to show Bill the Ponpom sculpture of the polar bear, since we saw his smaller version at Musée d’Orsay. I used to just like to wander in the garden. It was interesting to see the Olympics promo there too, even though Dijon wasn't hosting any events. Olympic fever was all over the country.Read more

  • Rental car adventure

    August 7, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

We took an earlier train from Dijon so we could get on the road to Brittany earlier.
A little time in Gare de Lyon for one more rings pic.

However, Budget didn’t seem to want us to get out of town earlier. They didn’t have any cars and wouldn’t until our reservation at 3:30. That would mean hanging out for 4 hours!

We scrambled through Enterprise and Alamo and finally had success at Hertz. About $50 more but at least we are on the road!

Getting out of Paris went better than expected - Bill navigated streets and I navigated map and we were off!

  • Cathedral de Rennes

    August 7, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Every French city has one…or ten. This is an imposing presence as you turn the corner. Part of this dates from the 3rd century! It is more Roman and austere inside and I like it better than the more gaudy and ornate ones.Read more

  • Rennes canals

    August 7, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

I expected the canals to be more lively - it depended which way you looked. We were so curious about one of the buildings at the end with the tower, but couldn’t find it on a map that was helpful.

    Love the juggling homeless guy.

  • Cafe du Port

    August 7, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

This was recommended by a couple of people so we decided to go for it. Very different place. No menus - just the chalk boards lugged around. Some great people watching.

Our food was really amazing - mussels and a fierce avocado. And then Bill had pollack and I had swordfish - both were lovely.Read more

  • Digestif

    August 7, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

We had to check out the rooftop bar after dinner. But it wasn’t outdoors. It was a top floor bar - not rooftop.

Still, our bartender was great and we had local whiskeys.

  • Mont St. Michel

    August 8, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Mont St. Michel has been a bucklist item.... unfortunately I didn't do the best research to realize HOW CRAZY BUSY it is in the summer. We got there about 10 and it wasn't too bad, but within an hour it was nuts. We wound up not going into the abby... the line was body to body - I was afraid someone was going to fall and we would all topple. So - we have to go back! :)Read more

  • La Vielle Auberge

    August 8, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Realizing how nuts Mont St Michel was and that our tickets weren’t until later, we dived into this restaurant to try to wait it out and be out of the crowds. They only let you in if you’re going to eat - not just drink.

We each ordered mussels - one marnière and one a la crème. OMG. You know you’re getting fresh and local when you get a heap of mussels for 16 euros! They were so good and sooo many.

  • The Dam

    August 8, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

This display about maintaining the ecosystem around the Mont and not letting too much silt into the area was interesting. A dam that moves and controls water in two directions!

Also good views without 17 million people in them!Read more

  • Cathedral de Bayeux

    August 8, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

It is always amazing to see old churches. This one is more than 1000 years old! A thousand.

There was an exhibit in the nave that overlayed Christian history with political and cultural global events in a really interesting way.Read more

  • Night market

    August 8, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Coming out of the cathedral, we stumbled on a night market. What a lovely discovery. We had crepes made by some young kids, saw some beautiful arts and things, watched ice cream rolls being made, had a local beer, talked with a great guy who had extended family in Texas about his plastic recycling/art project. What a neat way to clean the ocean and make art. We bought a cutting board and earrings!Read more

  • Restaurant in Bayeux

    August 8, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

The Frangeline was taking advantage of the crowds of people who wanted dinner but hadn't made reservations someplace. They kept adding tables down the street in front of businesses that were closed!

  • Pointe du Hoc

    August 9, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Our first stop with our tour guide was at the Pointe du Hoc where 220 Army Rangers landed. Seeing the bunkers the Germans built and seeing the dozens of craters where bombs landed, looking down the cliff that they had to climb up under heavy fire. It's amazing anyone survived.Read more

  • Omaha

    August 9, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Our next stop was Omaha beach. Such a contract from Point du Hoc... it really is a beach. Trying to imagine it without the homes, with no road, with all sorts of traps and impediments on the beach as the soldiers came in was sort of difficult to do. It looks like a great beach town... until you think about the lives lost on that sand.Read more
